Taken home from Itchen Valley's beer stall at today's local Farmer's Market, Andover; bottle-conditioned, BB 20/10/2010, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: pours a dark russet colour, bright and 95% clear, coming with very restrained beer head and low carbonation.
S: current-like sour fruits, dark sweet tea, rich semi-toasted malts and aromatic chocolatey-biscuity malts, plus a touch of smoked nuts - all in all this is like a diluted premium bitter, showcasing mostly dark-ish malts and traditional fruity hops, in need of more excitement.
T: initially the flavour gears towards the brown-malty side, laced with bits and pieces of nuts, sour grapey fruits as well as a light, refreshing note of licorice-like herbs... then hop bitterness catches up along with a mildly salty yeasty edge, rendering a light, herbal, chewy palate in the finish.
M&D: the mouthfeel is decent, softly carbonated to go well with a medium-light body. This is an attenuated brown bitter, malty and yet falling slightly too light on the side of hops overall.
