pours out the growler a completely pitch black colour without much of a head at all. no lace. lots of large bubbles present in the carbonation. aroma heavy on the dark roasted malts...burnt with an emphasis on the chocolate and coffee notes. smells nice enough. tastes follows the aroma....lots of bitter burnt malts....and that's about it. hopping neglible as per the style. the mouthfeel is rather lacking for a cream stout...i expected more of the velvety goodness that i experienced at the brewpub when i sampled this. it finishes fair...with lingering malt bitterness.

in all fairness...i believe i cracked into this growler a bit too late to give an accurate and fair description of the contents. this is a beer that needs to be sampled straight from the tap at the source to be better appreciated.

thanks to Dustin and Mary Brau for there extreme kindness and attention when my wife and i visited before x-mas.

Sampled at the brewpub in Lucan MN. Poured a dark black color. Some color distortion around the edges with a redder hue. The head retention was limited and did not last. The lacing fared better but also didn’t make it to the end.

The smell was very unique. It smelled exactly like Root Beer.

The taste is pretty close to root beer too. Some malt tastes are first noticeable. A sweeter taste from a mix of roasted, chocolate and something else that brinks a soda quality to it. Maybe Belgium pale malt. I wonder if there is Belgium candi as well. There is little hop flavor but some aromatic tastes are noticeable at the end. They have more of a earthy tone and heighten the root beer flavoring.

The body was light to medium, which I would have like to see more there. Overall a very different beer, or root beer, or beer.

On tap, Autumn Brew Review 2004...

Opaque dark brown, head is overcharged and short-lasting, bubbles far too big. Decent wide lacing. Bitter roasted nose, a touch acrid. Flavor follows aroma, but is slightly stale, like black instant coffee crystals you have in the cupboard for years and years. Flattens in flavor fairly early, and becomes really thin by the end. Mouthfeel and texture are what's missing, starts watery and obvious in burnt qualities, never generates a Cream Stout's smoothness or potential sweetness and then diminishes from there. The Pale Ale won more converts at the Fest and it was thick and tasty, but I didn't make any notes. This one didn't measure up for me.
