I sampled this on location. From talking to the staff, they brewed this beer in 2004 and let sit in growlers at cellar temperature over time. When poured it had a rich, dark color that was more of a deep mahogany brown then say black, but close done the same. When held to the light, the color remained dark brown but with some lighter brown coloring around the edges. There was not and head (and thus no retention) nor lace to speak of.
The smell was big in the phenol department. A sweeter malt smell with a blanket of alcohol covering everything. Really it reminded me of cough syrup.
The taste remained with the cough syrup taste. At the beginning you could taste a sweet toffee flavor but that didnt last long. Even in the after taste, the phenol flavor lingered. It just tasted hot to me.
It was hard to really judge the body but seemed anywhere from light to big. Truthfully I didnt enjoy this. But to each his own. Give it a try and you tell me what you think!
