Ned's Red? Seriously...Ned's Red? I'm guessing this is a stab at Flander's Red...
A week after the release of Flander's Ned Ale at the Grumpy Troll, the Great Dane comes out with Ned's Red. Coincidence? Probably.
Appearance: 8 oz serving in a medium sized snifter, Ned's Red pours a purplish, shoe polish color with deep red hues and an off white cake head that rapidly dissipates to leave rather attractive lacing.
Aroma: Rotten cherries, shoe leather, swamp soaked bug infested oak chips, fruity booze, sweet caramel.
Taste: Repugnant, boozy fruit that's been smashed under feet - and not the clean feet of hot French women either. Big 300 pound guys in dirty Nikes did the smashing of these cherries, giving the beer a less than lovely rubbery flavor. Wood and earth are plentiful and a caramel sweetness balances the tart, semi-funky cherry.
Mouthfeel: Full, earthy, rubbery, chewy, leaning towards tart but not enough, tepid, and reminiscent of poison. Feels like a high ABV.
Drinkability: Close to none. I love funky sour beers but this beer has all the off flavors and none of the good funk. To boot, there is way to much sweetness and earthiness and they go too far to balance any interesting tart or sour mouthfeel that may have developed. Great to see a stab at something funky but it didn't work for me.
