Discover the beers of the Sisters of Maredret Abbey, a range brewed with spelt and plants, inspired by Saint Hildegard of Bingen. Spelt provides floral, nutty and slightly bitter notes and supports the yeasty aromas of the Altus. The use of plants, notably cloves and juniper berries for Altus, gives it its unique taste.
Maredret Altus develops a warm spiced bouquet with notes of clove, hay and juniper berries. The hop aromas will remind you of freshly cut grass and the caramel flavours give this abbey beer a comforting edge.

330ml bottle served cold into a pint glass.
Appearance - Hazy amber colored with brown hues. Nice finger plus of head after an aggressive pour.
Smell - Subdued nose, but a little of everything with some bready malts, sharp hoppiness and a pervasive earthiness.
Taste -Muted flavors, some caramel malt, some bread. Plenty of sweetness. A little juniper mixed in as well.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and light on carbonation. Easy enough to drink, but needs some more bubbles for feel.
Overall - Decent dark ale, but not super impressive either. Worth a shot.

I bought a bottle from an Ottawa LCBO recently and enjoyed it enough to grab another. This beer pours light golden and presents a nice fluffy head that dissipates to a half finger throughout the drink. The aroma has light hints of herby caramel with a little apple and pear. It’s sweet but not too sweet.
I’m having this on a cold December night after a couple of other Belgian triple beers….this is the best of the lot and a great one to end the pre-dinner drinks with. Enjoy!!

Poured a 330ml bottle into a chalice. A one finger off white head on a slightly hazy dark amber. The head diminishes to a layer that persists to the end. Sheets of fine lacing.
Sweet spicy malts in the nose. The taste is interesting. The juniper and clove are apparent. Some caramel and hop. The herbal additions lend this beer some Gruit like qualities.
Medium body and light carbonation. Very smooth with a soft texture. Overall a fine and unique Belgian Dark Ale. Well worth a try.

At my lady Pamela's house; bottled and slightly chilled, 330mL in a pint glass. From The Roundhouse Centre LCBO on Howard Ave. in nearby Windsor. Best before June 30/27. My 1st beer from the Rixensart, Belgium brewery. Lovingly adored by Gracie the cat...

Very thoughtfully brewed. Glad that Martin's is keeping these Maradret Sisters' recipes and, I'm sure, improving on them. Bought at the bar at Martin's Dream hotel in Mons. Another good example of the British model of combining brewing and a sophisticated kitchen and hospitality... but doing it with a Belgian flair.
Looks a pretty amber and elegant label; foam could be more active. I clearly Smell the Juniper and it dominates the early Taste, but then the cloves offer a more subtle balance. Low bitterness is welcome by me. Medium-mouthed to full, possibly because spelt often is softer and the Carmel malts warmer. I would like Altus again.

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6.8%. Deep golden to amber colour, huge white head. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, malts and mild spices, including juniper berries. Flavour with the same elements, not too sweet, some fruitiness too, low bitterness.
