Copenhagen 13/2 2016. 33 cl bottle from Meny, Østerfælled Torv, Kbh. Ø. Idyllic picture of a Christmas tree and a old building by night and snowflakes slowly drifting down on the label.
Pours clear golden yellow with a white head. Settles nicely as a 1 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.
Aroma is sour and harsh. Notes of alcohol and caramel. Sharp.
Medium strong carbonation and a slightly thick palate. Lightly tingling texture.
Flavor is malty followed by a strong sour graininess, Only moderate sweetness. Good bitterness in aftertaste. Dry finish.
Not especially Christmas-like - but all right.

Found this in a grocery store and was glad to see that its distribution chain was lax enough to let in this brewer from Denmark's far north in a remote area of the Jutland Island where it seems like humanity would barely survive The Arctic. Thisted has brewed for 125 years, somehow surviving world wars and consolidation in the industry. They also distill some spirits. And I'm sure they do lots of other good things that I don't understand because I don't even try to understand Danish.
This winter lager is a pretty amber with a decent foam and legs to boot. Julefnug, however, doesn't Smell like not much; no sweet malt or holiday spices I detect. I will say it is balanced, just enough hops to dry out my salivary glands. Medium-mouthed for a lager. Soft, too. I'm finding that the winter lager's recipe is mostly a higher ABV and slightly darker malts. Skal !
