Up for review is a 750ml bottle of Gueze from Upstream Brewing Company. Poured into a snifter at cellar temp. Really impressed by this one. Great, glowing pour, lacy head. Note of sour fruits are dominant with oak, funk and sweet malts. Crisp, dry body. Long acidic finish. Really great!

Enjoyed as part of an Upstream Belgian beer tasting; 750ml bottle supplied by Fugazme.
This review is interpreted from sloppy, disjointed notes:
Clear on the first pour, gold in hue, kind of pale. The liquid was hazy on the second pour, this improved the appearance somewhat. White head, it was short-lived and not too tall, which was a product of the tasting I assume. There was some spotty lacing, didnt cling very well, which is to be expected for the style. I was expecting a richer looking beer.
The nose has moderate potency but what I smell is dead-on for a Gueuze. The bouquet is classic it is very textbook. I can see why this was a medal winner at the GABF. It is tart, earthy, fruity (apples, apricots, raisins, lemons), with some barnyard and oaky notes. I can tell there is no wheat in this beer. The nose is solid.
The palate isnt as acidic or as sharp as the nose indicated. This is a bit disappointing. Sure, the flavor profile is well-rounded and tasty. It is surprisingly warming. Tart and clean, refreshing and appetizing; fairly woody with a good amount of interwoven lemon notes, some apricots and apples. Faint barnyard notes. While likeable it is very tame, Girardin 1882 this is not.
Medium/medium-light in body, moderately carbonation, I like more effervescence in the style. The mouthfeel is fitting but not spectacular.
While a good beer and an above-average Gueuze I cant believe this beer retailed at $40. Ridiculous! I found it too be restrained but well-crafted. It is a textbook example. Without a doubt, it was drinkable maybe too much so; a bit more acidity and dryness would have made this a nice sipper. Congrats to Upstream for winner at the GABF with this beer. It was nice. I am happy I tried it but I am even happier I tried it in good company.
