Bourbon Publican Porter is our infamous Publican Porter aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. Pitch black in color, this beer has big aromas of wood and bourbon followed by scents of dark chocolate and alcohol. Full-bodied with a velvety smooth mouthfeel, Bourbon Publican Porter tastes of bourbon and chocolate.

Serving: 750mL bottled poured into a Founder's CBS snifter. No bottled on date, but this is the Private Stache release from November 2016. Also done side-by-side with Short's Publican Porter for reference.

A: Pours a decently thick body, pitch black. Decent amount of off-white bubbly head lacing around the edge. Head is a little lighter in color than the base beer.

S: Huge, huge barrel. Oak, wood, cedar, smoke, char. A little bit of vanilla hiding in there, but this is all barrel. Interesting that I can't get any of the anise or cocoa from the base beer in the aroma here.

T: Some oak, bourbon, cocoa. Little bit of dark fruit and fig on the finish. Flavor is mostly bourbon again.

M: Kind of thin and watery here. Carbonation is decent. Just a tad thinner than the base beer.

O: Barrel-aged versions of Short's beers have always been hit or miss for me. Most of them were always tap room experiments, and you never knew which barrels were used or how long they were aged. Same deal here, but now we see a bottled release. I wouldn't put this in the upper echelon of Bourbon Short's beers, as it's a bit too thin and the barrel tends to mute a lot of the rich flavors and aromas of the base beer as opposed to enhancing them. It's not a bad beer, and is actually quite enjoyable. It's just not what I expect from Short's.

O: If you missed the release, I wouldn't worry too much. Look for it at a tasting or on tap, but I wouldn't trade an arm or a leg for it.
