Serving: 22 oz. bomber poured into a Founder's CBS snifter. No clear bottled on date, but this is one of the recent Private Staches this past month, so fresh.
A: More carbonated, as expected, but still a nice pitch black color with good lacing and head retention.
S: Really, really nice. The rye whiskey's spiciness is a great compliment to the sharp fruity notes of the IPA.
T: Huge fruity IPA notes up front, slight grapefruit, tangerine. Middle is that roast character from the black malts. Finish is all whiskey, spicy rye, char, vanilla.
M: A little lacking here, but honestly not surprising as the base beer is an IPA.
O: Not a lot of reference points for this. The closest is obviously Bourbon Goodnight Bodacious, but that was never bottled I believe (this is way better, by the way). In the market, I'd say maybe Project PAM from Founder's, but that was Maple Syrup BA. Founder's did do bourbon BA Imperial Black IPA, but that was also tap only at Black Party one year. It's an interesting combo, and props to Short's for bringing it out. I know Goodnight Bodacious is a fan favorite, and one of mine as well. The rye barrel is a nice touch and the flavors meld really nicely here. I know Short's doesn't have a large barrel program, and even when they do put one out, it's generally not great. But for whatever reason, they nailed this one. Happy Memorial Day!
Recommendation: Certainly not a style for everyone, but if the description at all interests you, seek it out!

Very nice barrel aged IPA! t amazingly retains Goodnight Bodacious' floral and roasted character, while adding a peppery oaky flavor. Using rye instead of Bourbon barrels was a good decision; the sickly sweetness of Bourbon would've overpowered the base ale. As is, quite an excellent pick up.
