Tasted this evening by 1.5 pints at the Cross Keys, a JDW pub in the heart of the City area, London.
A: pours a jet black hue with a brownish, frothy cap, with very good retention and leaving pretty nice and tight lacing along the way. Looking fresh and nice, much more superior to a forced-poured pint of Guinness from a nitro-tap.
S: brilliantly roasted flavour with lots of coffee beans and tobacco, thick and aromatic, with a flow of profoundly sweet maltiness at the back. Overall quite complex with a solid body, but it doesn't stop there... a serious swirling, as the pint-glass gives some space after two sips, brings up a pear/apricot kind of fruity hop aroma which provides pleasant, complementary elements to the deeper roastiness upfront. how nice...
T: utterly bitter and coffeeish from the first second onwards... moderately smoked tang, char-coal, bitter-ish tobacco to follow... leading to a dryish, herbal bitter and surprisingly clean yet superbly lingering aftertaste. Lots and lots of coffee beans to chew on the palate...
M&D: overall this beer has a 110% body but remains so smooth on top of the wholesome bitterness--punching well above its weight (4.4%abv.) and what a stout it is!! Overall a full-bodied, full-flavoured yet extremely quaffable stout in nature. Brilliant beer to savour and I couldn't resist going for an extra-half pint of it. Definitely one of the best wintery beers I've had on draught this winter, and reviewed within the style, this is by far the best oatmeal stout I've ever had!
