still no category here on BA for mexican lager, which this is, a shame. done with flaked maize and interestingly motueka hops, not sure i have seen southern hemisphere hops in one of these, i think in an attempt to make it limey, which is not all the way successful, and this ends up drinking a bit more like a hoppy blonde or something to me, not quite as crisp and clean and refreshing as i look for the style to be generally, with some bitterness from the hops too, not sure they used a mexican lager strain, this seems kind of european to me in a way, but could be the pils malt in it. its blonde, frothy headed from the tap, and seems fairly loaded for what it is, more complex than it needs to be, in aroma and flavor both i get subtle herbal character, lemon verbena and mowed lawn, some green melon too, and a white winey note from the hops too that maybe slightly out of place in this style but adds interest. the yeast is bready and doughy at the same time, and really is quite pungent in the flavor, especially as it warms, which i think takes away from perceived crispness regardless of how dry it is, and its almost a little soapy on the palate to me, like the temperature was off a little or something. the corn adds middle sweetness and an earthy thing i like and that is compatible with the yeast, and overall maybe i am being too harsh here, its a flavorful beer with more hops than expected but unique in that regard and plenty fresh, just not sure it quite hits for me as a traditional corn lager. that said, it does well with their delicious pizza and is an easy enough summer drinker. i cant complain, i absolutely love coming here, and its cool how many new ones they had this time through!
