Our robust hoppy stout came from attention to the fundamentals of brewing science and art. Intense hopping (Cashmere & Idaho Gem) is supported by carefully selected malts (lots of roasty chocolate). Allow yourself to indulge in First Principles.

Received from @cblack85 as part of the first (hopefully of many) Barleywine/Stout BIF's. Full disclosure -- I starting pouring this, and there was so much of a head I had to wait about 10 minutes for it to subside, which I first thought was a bad thing. And then when I finally did try it, my first thought was "OK, but boring". However... after further review...
L - this poured a very deep dark brown. The huge head I mentioned in my preamble lasted a while, in retrospect that's not a bad thing, I'm just not used to it. Moderate lacing (less than I expected, based on how it started)
S - super roasty, with some dark chocolate and a smell that I can best describe as "Russian Imperial Stout-esque"
T - it's still mainly the roastiness. Very earthy, and a lot of chocolate, but it's not sweet at all -- almost a bitter-fudge flavor (if that's a thing). There is also a lot of hoppiness in the aftertaste.
F - very smooth , which I assume is the barrel, but there's no booziness at all.
Overall, this is really good -- an excellent example of an old school Imperial Stout (I would have guessed this was an RIS if I drank it blind). The hops were an interesting twist.

Appearance: Pours coal colored with a three finger beige head that fades slowly; squiggles of lacing linger
Smell: Charred black bread, Baker's chocolate and piney hops
Taste: A lot of char, up front, with a burnt black bread character supported by the Baker's chocolate; a hint of fruity coffee is expressed; piney hops, through the middle, but the finish is still dominated by the char
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation
Overall: You don't come across many hoppy Imperial Stouts these days so this is a bit of a throwback

Pours a deep dark chocolate color with a tinge of ruby,a fluffy deep mocha colored head atop.Aromas of dark chocolate, slight dark fruit, and earthiness.First off for how big it is it's really not that sweet upfront, some bitter chocolate and mild fudge, but the big hops give off a big dark coffee roast, and earthy/woodiness into the finish.Wow this a gigantically hopped stout and I think it's great.D-R is making very good use of hops in their newer lineup.

Black color, foamy tan head with a lot of retention. Strong flavor of dark chocolate. Doesn’t feel boozy or taste overly alcoholic despite being 12% ABV. Earthy hop presence on the finish. While it lacks complexity, it’s a solid example of the style.
