Beautiful dark copper color and clear. Little head and no lace like so many barley wines.

Sweet raisin nose. The alcohol, while present, it's far more mild than I expected.

Sweet, prune like flavor on the initial taste. Plenty of alcohol warmth from the 12% abv, but it's not a dominating feature. Rich bodied as one may expect but the carbonation is muted as well. The aftertaste has just a touch of hop but the real flavor is mostly sweet dried fruit and alcohol warmth.

On-tap 1/27/2017 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in North Attleboro, MA, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a bright coppery red color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong fruit, candy sugar, caramelized malts and some hops.

T: The taste starts out very sweet with flavors of fruit, candy sugar and caramel. Then a hearty malt character comes in along with some alcohol sting. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Pours a decent fluffy fizzy 1/2 finger head that fades semi slowly, some soapy lacing, crystal clear amber orange color.

Nose typical sweet candy malts, toasted reddish malts, a little syrupy, caramel and alittle toffee, toasted biscuity cereal, candy syrupy, and a hint of booze, mild oak int he background.

Taste brings sweet candy, huge caramel toffee candy, candy syrup and melted sugar, reddish candy toffee, toasted mild biscuity malt, a little chewy nougaty malt, caramel candies, a little warming booze, faint toasted oak. Finish is a little bit hotter, drier, not really sticky surprisingly, lingering caramel toffee reddish candy.

mouth is med to fuller bod, softer, a bit of warming then hotter booze, nice carb.

Overall surprisingly pretty good, a little warm but still drinkable for 12%, base malts are nice, lots of candy flavors without being too sweet, nice dry finish, nice mouthfeel, only gripe is that the oak is barely detectable.

2016 vintage served cold in a teku

Poured clear amber with hints of red. Slight khaki head that sank to nothing. Nose is oak, vanilla, char, bourbon, toasted marshmallow, coconut, light Barrel character. Slight bitterness, on the tongue. Taste follows the nose well and it does not drink at all like a 12% beer. Very nice.

2016 vintage. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours copper with great clarity and transparency; big fluffy light khaki head that falls leaving nice bubbly retention and solid lacing. The aromas are malt forward. It has a sweet aroma. Lots of caramel with some hints of vanilla. There's a nice amount of dark fruits with a nice amount of cherry as well. Some very mild spicy note, possibly some faint cinnamon in the mix. The barrel characteristics are subtle and balanced. The flavors are very clean. Lots of caramel along with some cocoa and toffee. More cherry along with some raisins and plum. More hints of vanilla. Some mild citrus notes in the mix. The oak and bourbon notes are subtle, but blend well with everything. Finishes slightly spicy. There's a mild warmth, but the alcohol is well hidden. This one is dangerously drinkable. Mouthfeel is nice. It's on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy and smooth. Once again, this one is dangerously drinkable.

This is a very nice barleywine. The barrel characteristics are subtle and balanced, but they're definitely there. Very enjoyable stuff.

The Abv is correct so I'm guessing this is the right beer - the label indicates six months of bourbon barrel aging. While those characteristics are quite subtle - perhaps just a hint of vanilla and oak - this beer nonetheless shines. Classic and expertly executed American barleywine that will likely be overlooked and underrated due to the unsexy manufacturer. Near perfect appearance, just stellar and absolutely clear and crystalline amber with wispy cream colored head; nose brings notes of fusel alcohol, maple syrup, brown sugar, faintly earthy hops. Less hop character in the taste than many American barleywines but there's a neat note of finishing bitterness at the end. Again a nice interplay between maple syrup and hot alcohol flavors. Not super heavy on the caramel/toffee thing which keeps this on the nimbler side, not flabby or crazy underattenuatted. Still a butt kicker knocking down a 22oz solo.

Medium body with medium carbonation - maybe a little on the high side for a contemporary barleywine, and it's nice. This has a lively and almost crisp feel to it, with the slightest amount of sticky sweetness. Will definitely grab some more of these next time I come
Across them. If you like barleywines you should buy this. If you don't you should reassess your beer drinker credentials.

Impressive offering from Harpoon - I need to state right off the bat that I have not reached for a beer from this stalwart of the Boston craft scene for a long time, but I'm a big fan of BA barleywines so I picked up a bottle. Poured a beautiful clear amber-ish hue more akin to a malty lager; you can see right through the body to your fingers holding the glass. Very little head with almost no lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, toffee, candied fruit, wood and some booze. The first taste is all about the malt and barrel - roasted malt, toasted grains, oak, toffee, vanilla, caramel and then candied fruit and raisin. A balancing hop-bitterness keeps the beer from becoming cloying. There's some heat from the alcohol but it's pleasant and easily manageable; that vanilla and oak from the barrel lingers creating a smooth feel. Outstanding beer.
