In the heat of the summer, Harpoon’s employee owners partake in an annual homebrew showdown called the Owner’s Cup.
This year’s band of champions drew fast with a Southwestern take on the New England IPA. Brewed with a blend of tropical fruits and Citra, Mosaic, & Falconer’s Flight hops, Bandito! also packs a subtle punch of heat from the addition of real jalapeño.
Brewers: Blair Landry, Will Long, Greg Moon, & Anthony Oliverio
Tasting Notes - Appearance: Hazy straw; Aroma: Pineapple juice, lime zest, fresh cut grass, sugar candy; Mouthfeel: Light and soft; Taste: Ripe mango, diced jalapeño, wheat cracker, mixed citrus Finish: Clean, dry, faint touch of capsaicin heat.
Beer Details - IBU: 48; Grain Bill: 2 Row Pale, Wheat, Flaked Corn, Buckwheat Kasha; Hops: Citra, Mosaic, Falconer’s Flight; Yeast: London Ale; Specialty Ingredients: Jalapeño, Pineapple Juice, Mango Purée.

Cloudy. White cloud gold color. Smaller head but good streaky and spotty lacing.
Earthy first, jalapeño second for the smell. It smells dry.
This starts off semisweet but dries out completely by the swallow. It starts like a normal IPA (malty with some tropical fruit) but finishes with the hot pepper bite. The aftertaste dies off quickly.

A thanks to the amazing woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of citrus, light jalapenos. Taste is citrus, mango, jalapenos, mild heat and little bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

So I've had beers with different peppers before, but jalapenos? In an IPA??? This could be a weird one
Pours a cloudy pale gold with 2 fingers of soapy white head that slowly reduces to a cap and leaves broken rings of lacing
There is something distinctly candied in the aroma, most likely coming from the mangoes, but it gives off stronger notes of peach and orange. The pineapple is present but lighter with very mild hops and just the tiniest smell of peppers to balance the fruitiness. Quite the enticing aroma here
All tropical up front in the taste with juicy pineapple and lightly tangy lemon. Mid palate shifts to a surprising balance of piney hops and bready malt. After the swallow is when the jalapeno starts to come in, but not at all overbearing. The late aftertaste brings back the candied peach notes from the nose. Not my favorite taste, but I will admit it was crafted very well and I'll give it credit for that alone
This has a medium body and almost no carbonation, which leads it to drink a bit too heavy, but nothing crazy. A bit more carb would've helped the situation, but it still drinks lighter than the 7.8%
This was a weird one overall, no doubt about it. But it was very well put together. Cheers to Harpoon for brewing something whacky like this
