Stout brewed with lactose, cocoa nibs, vanilla, cannoli shells, and with natural flavors added, aged in rye whiskey barrels.
An even more decadent take on our Cannoli Stout collab with Mike’s Pastry of Boston’s North End. Brewed using Mike’s handmade cannoli shells, cocoa nibs, lactose, and vanilla to re-create the flavor profile of their famed dessert, this higher-strength rendition was aged for two months in premium rye whiskey barrels for added layers of vanilla, spice and caramel.

Look - pint can purchased at the brewery and poured into an imperial pint glass. Dark brown in color, though transparent under light. Two finger head that largely dissipates, with moderate lacing retention.
Smell - a lot of complexity here: cocoa, graham crackers, coffee, caramel, and light smokiness. i dont smell much rye, but some vanilla from the barrel is detectable.
Taste - slightly underwhelming on the palate. sweet cocoa flavors balanced by moderate bitterness, and the lactose presence is strong. sugars and some wintry spices towards the end. the cocoa comes back in the finish, which is mellow with slight warmness towards the very end.
Feel - medium body, moderate carbonation, and on the heavier side for ABV at 9%. not harsh but booziness detectable towards the finish.
Overall - I liked this one a bit more than the non barrel aged version. this one has a bit more complexity and the flavors blend well. would be nicer if the beer was more full bodied: it leaves me wanting just a tad bit more.

16oz can poured into a snifter
A- pours dark brown in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that has short retention
S- smells of cocoa nibs, milk sugars, heavy cream, light vanilla, a hint of roast and caramel. Rye barrel is there, but you have to search for it
T- sweet and malty up front with notes of cocoa nibs and heavy cream leading the way. Mid-palate brings out some vanilla, caramel and light roast. The finish brings out a sharp oaky rye bite, along with more cocoa. Lingers of rye and lactose
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that fades a bit into the finish

Good head production and decent retention. Attractive beer.
Very pleasant aroma, with notes of chocolate, whiskey, cola, prune, toast, light char, cherry, and molasses. The whiskey is fairly weak, but the cacao is much more noticeable than in the lower ABV base beer.
Like the "regular" Mike's Pastry, this is similarly thin and fizzy on the palate given the ABV and style. The flavor really pops, however; upping the ABV was a wise move. Notes of vanilla, cream, and chocolate really come through, along with lesser notes of rye whiskey, nuts, banana, caramel, and toast.
In terms of the style, this is still nowhere near the best pastry stouts. It's much thinner, and the flavor profile isn't nearly as rich. Further, the whiskey is very restrained - not surprising, given only two months of aging. I suspect going with bourbon, and at least nine months, would have taken this beer to another level. However, it's still a very tasty beer, and a much better take on the style than the 7.3% regular Mike's Pastry.

Pours very dark. Cinnamon aroma. Big malt flavor. Cinnamon, chocolate, and pastry. Sweet but not too sweet. Complex but well rounded. A great dessert stout.

Near black color where no light passes. Served with only rim bubbles present. No lacing whatsoever.
The smell starts with a strong whiff of cinnamon and vanilla. Perhaps some light chocolate, cream, and brown sugar. No coffee. Very sugary.
The flavor doesn't really kick in until the swallow. Good carbonation with a thinner body (given the sweetness). Very little stout bitterness present. This tastes like a dessert. The finish is unbelievably complex. I get graham cracker, molasses, vanilla, dark chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of hot chili. No alcohol despite the 9.0% abv.
I have a soft spot in my heart for daring and unusual beers. This deserves recognition for its complexity and dramatic flavor profile.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass canned on 1/25/2021. Pours a dark brown with a finger plus sticky light brown head that leaves thin streaks of lace with nice retention. 4
Aroma cinnamon, vanilla, cannoli, faint cocoa, and some whiskey from the barrel definitely is present. 3.5
Taste follows cinnamon hits first and hard, cannoli, vanilla, cocoa, and the rye whiskey is rather dominant in the finish and kind of in a odd way. 3.5
Mouthfeel is almost medium, enough life for the style, not dry, and at 9% it drinks bigger alcohol wise, but goes down rather easy because of how thin it is. 3.5
Overall very glad it was just a single, would not be sad if I never had this odd duck again, but still sipping and happy to try it. Was hoping Clown Shoes rubbed off on this one and nope a swing and miss for me. 3.5
