A: Pours a deep, almost wooden looking, hazy copper. Thick and creamy off-white head, leaving behind great lacing.

S: First thing noticed is the huge hop aroma mixed with caramel and burnt sugar. This is followed my some major notes of oak, smelling woody from the barrel, and a little piney from the hops. Just great.

T: Wow, a lot of incredible hoppy goodness going on here, but a good sweetness to even out the bitterness to make a near perfect balance of hops and malt. Tasting notes of citrus and pine, but with the barrel aging comes an amazing earthyness and definite oak flavoring. As good as the nose is, the taste is even better, the caramel/sugary sweetness is not at all overpowering, but compliments the hops incredible well.

M: Exceptionally creamy and almost perfect carbonation to make this one of the smoothest beers out there.

D: Phenomenal beer. It was served at the Windsor location on tap, dubbed the "10th Year Anniversary" beer. Tried getting a growler of this stuff, but no luck. If you can try it, don't hesitate.

Ordered on cask at the Windsor brewery location, arriving in a Leviathan glass with thick and creamy brown sugar head over a hazy chestnut-toned body. Heavy lacing on this one. Smells like sweet caramel malt and serious vanilla with an intense, almost candy-like fruity hop aroma and decent oak presence.

Tastes warm and woody with a delicious oak and vanilla presence. Malt backbone is powerful, but subdued next to the warm oak and candied hop. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, medium-bodied, with carbonation adding to the soft and marshmallow-y texture. It's served just under room temperature and decently drinkable as such, but turns into a sipper as it warms up and some of the sweeter flavors are lost.

Overall, this is one of my favorite Harpoon offerings to date. The vanilla from the oak aging is particularly impressive. I will be back for another glass!

Poured from the cask at the Windsor, VT Harpoon Brewery.

Served in a Leviathan glass, the cask conditioned oak-aged Imperial IPA pours a thick, hazy, caramel-orange with a creamy off-white head. Big waves of lacing are left behind.

On the nose there are lots of raw, grassy, pine-infused hops, sweet malts, caramel, vanilla and oak. Almost smells like I'm standing over boiling wort and throwing in fresh hops. The oak aging comes through nicely and adds a touch of complexity to the beer. So good. I could sit and smell this all day!

Tipping back the glass reveals sweet, smooth, caramel malts that quickly give way to a rush of bitter hops mixed with vanilla soaked oak. Woody with just a touch of alcohol. Pine-laden bitterness and again, caramel vanilla malt. Tastes like a combination of a strong ale and an imperial IPA.

Mouthfeel is extremely smooth (to be expected from the cask). Creamy, rich, low carbonation and lingering bitterness. Sticky hops and caramel.

Drinkability is amazing, especially for a beer of this strength. The ABV is almost unnoticeable and the flavor is excellent. Plus the body is so smooth. This is the sweet nectar of the Gods.

Overall, this is hands down the best beer Harpoon has produced to date. The aroma is outstanding and complex. The flavor is delicious. They really did a good job with the oak aging. It's not too strong, yet they managed to pull out a lot of vanilla notes. For any strong ale / imperial IPA lovers, I highly recommend this beer. Great work Harpoon.
