I really enjoyed this beer. As far as style goes, it is somewhere between and ESB and an amber ale.
Pours a clear deep copper. Not much head coming out of the tap, but had decent lacing.
Light berry like esters and mild citrus hop character but the toasted and caramel malt play the biggest role in the aroma. Very even earthy hop bitterness in the taste, with staying power in the finish. Toasted malt also substantial in the flavor. A touch of metallic tinge I couldn't place also showed up.
Medium body. Smooth and drinkable with moderate carbonation. No alcohol coming through at 5.6% abv.
Feels like an over the top ESB or a very earthy amber ale. Overall, very enjoyable. I could throw back a few pints of this.

Sampled 4/29/2011 at the brewpub.
Menu reads: "This very hoppy beer was first brewed accidentally, but it is one of our favorite mishaps yet."
This doesnt seem like an IPA nor does it seem golden, so I asked the server for clarification and he said that it is in fact Golden Thistle. I also tasted them all side by side and it doesnt seem to match any of the others in the sampler set.
Pours dark red bordering on black in the center, with a tall offwhite head, good lacing, and good retention.
Aroma is slightly roasted and piney but mostly malty.
Flavor is a bit confusing because it's really not hoppy at all, just bitter, malty and semi-dry with some roast and caramel. Seems to be an overbittered amber of sorts.
Body is medium, well carbonated, and enjoyable in reasonable serving sizes.
