Thanks to nerd for providing this one. Split with Bendurgin. The color is murky dark brown. There isn't any head, just a couple bubbles.

The aroma has lots of wine-like vinegar with some sweet malt. This is quite vinous.

The taste dominates with sour flavors that blend with cocoa and some nutmeg. The finish is mildly sweet, helping to balance out the acidity. There is some vanillaish oak flavors in the background also. This tastes like a solid Flanders style ale.

The body is medium, with very little carbonation. This is a smooth sipper.

The flavors are strong but they blend well together. This is still worth savoring, though I never had it earlier.

Huge thanks to Andrewinski1 for sharing this rarity. Poured into a chalice. Sits black in the glass with no head at all. Not much to look at here.

Balsamic vinnegar in the aroma here with some dandilions and a tart cherry presence. Earthy flavors and sour as hell. Balsamic vinnegar on the pallet with a sour cherry/grape skin kind of flavor in the finish.

The body has a bit of tannon to it being light and dry with active carbonation. Overall not to bad here. A little bit more of a vinnegar profile than I would like but enjoyable and pretty damn sour to boot.

2009 rate, but enjoyed this multiple times over the years.

Pours a deep brown with a little orange around the edges. An aggressive pour is needed to coax a good head, which is strange, flimsy and soapy. Woody aroma of earth, leather, cherries, and some balsamic vinegar. Flavor is a strange and lovely progression. At first dark and earthy, with sour cherries and vinegar. Suddenly bright with rich and powerful citric acids. Finish is long and rich, kind of spicy, with a very pleasant nutty tone. Gains character as it warms. This is very complex, more so than blend 3. In the same vein as Oerbier Reserva, but it’s closest cousin would seem to be Cuvee de Tomme, a beer I don’t love by any stretch, but this clearly is superior. Could use more carbonation, but it’s kind of not an issue in that the thing is so wine-like to begin with, and is just super complex.

2011 edit. To briefly contrast, time has treated this fairly well. Higher carbonation now which is a plus. Flavors are tighter, more acidic, more sour. A great dark sour but paled in comparison to Black Cherry Bomb which was enjoyed beside it. Very nice.

Had a kickass JP tasting a while back... finally getting my notes typed up.

This beer is dark. Deep brown mahogany. The head is minimal, but the legs are thick and viscous leaving behind giant chunks of bubbles.
The nose is strong oak with some nice sour cherries and vinegar. Some malts provide a sweet touch.

The flavor is super sour. Wow. Much more sour than the nose had me prepared for. So much sourness it dominates the profile. There is a touch of sweetness up front with some malts, dark fruits, and cherries, but then welcome to sourville. Intense mouth-puckering sourness. Awesome.
I'm a fan, I'm not gonna lie.

The body is medium-full. It's pretty hefty, but the carbonation is light enough that it still drinks really easy.

I'm hoping to land another bottle of this one! I'm loving these Grand Reserves! (though I'm scared that these are ruining me on the regular lineup!)

Thanks to Kevin for sending me this in White Whale 4.

A: The beer pours a dark brownish color, with a thin layer of off-white head.

S: Perhaps not entirely surprisingly, there is a strong vinegar aroma (balsamic?) as well as what seems to be red wine. A bit of fruitiness in the form of raisins and cherries. Lots of oak with a really leathery note.

T: Starts of with more balsamic vinegar and sour cherry. Still plenty of leather with a slight vinous character. The finish has some red wine vinegar, oak, and is just an extreme sourness.

M: This one is medium in body with some medium to light carbonation.

O: I think I would just prefer to have any number of other Jolly Pumpkin beers, but this wasn't bad.

750mL bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a fairly dark brown with tan foam and bubbles.

(S)- A nicely sour funk with a very subtle mild roasted aspect.

(T)- Similar to the smell. A nicely sour and acidic roasted funky wild.

(M)- A crisp carbonation level and balance. A great feel of funk and sour.

(D)- A great sour. This is what many dark sours with they could be like. Far superior to the Batch 5 we had before this.

Appearance: Wow this one pours the darkest brown to borderline black I've seen....lifeless like dolls eyes! The crown is really nothing more than an off white ring and lace is non-existent.

Smell: Lots of character here....deep malts showered in lactic tartness. Cherries are the most predominant although the lactic acid some times reminds me of lemon juice and white grape juice mixed. Kind of like a dark Cuvee de Castleton in some ways!

Taste: This one has enough complexity to remain interesting. Its definitely different having such dark malt mixed with all of this lactic acid. Not very vinous but I suppose it would get more so in time. I love it.

Mouthfeel: Really lacking carbonation but the medium body helps balance that out a bit. If it was thin bodied it would come off flat with such little carbonation.

Drinkability: Quite good but the mouthfeel holds it back from a 5.0

A-pours a dark brown, almost black liquid with a little tan colored head that sits quite dense.

S-the nose has a good malt body to it, tart aromas, lots of tart cherries, lightly acidic, dry oak, a little vinous and earthy, hints of leather with some subtle red wine qualities.

T-malt base is present but less so than the nose, more sourness than expected from the nose but not overly sour. tons of ripe fruits, cherries, strawberries, well balanced tartness. oak is there, light and very dry oak and a little earthy, hints of brett and just a touch of acidity.

M-full bodied, well carbonated, smooth and crisp finish that is semi dry leaving you wanting more.

D-great flaovrs, love the oak presence along with the huge sweet fruit flavors and somewhat wine like characteristics. the sourness is moderate and balances this nicely, very good beer!

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. this is from batch four, purchased at the brewery in Michigan. pours a deep chocolate brown with minimal head after a hard pour, and garnet highlights.

aroma is ascerbic, with an earthy quality that is comprised of oak and caramel notes, along with faint berry and alcohol notes. a very light grape and apple note is present as well, envoloped by the sour character. a bit of spice is present upon warming a bit, giving it a distinct winter-like character.

taste is mildly sweet, with a sout note up front and a profile that follows the nose. the taste is a bit more fruity when compared to the aroma, giving the brew the light sweetness that does well to even out the ascerbic character. very smooth in profile with a bit of sharpness upon finishing. masterfully crafted.

mouthfeel is medium bodied and sharp from the sour quality, but does quite well alongside the flavors present. a bit of alcohol is present upon warming, but does not take away from the character.

drinkability is good. the earthy quality that the brew takes on does well to balance the sour character, white imparting a bit of sweetness that brings the symphony of flavors together. definitely a brew to be savored and sipped. cheers!

Thanks to MasterSki's efforts, I am now pretty sure the following review is of a batch four.

12oz bottle sampled at the Sexual Chocolate release. Thanks to whoever was sharing this! Drunk in chill February, 2009.

A. Dark, rich 'n thick brown, absurdly small wisp of foam atop, looks heavy.

S. Simply everything dark, sour, and good in the world! Oozing with oak, bing cherries, lemon-citrus, sharp intense snappy wild sour lactic notes, raisins, and a dense brown-malt sugary sweetness. Intense, over the top, and amazing.

T. Very intense lactic-fruit sourness upfront that fades into an oaky, puckering, huge and deep fruity finish. The flavor profile is massive, even a tiny sip sets everything all a-quiver. Your taste buds will shock themselves awake when this slides over 'em, and the wild sourness will bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened beer geek, either from delight or from the fact that this beer is darn tough to acquire.

M. Barely carbonated, slick and heavy with a raging, complex tartness that lingers quite long and actually warms the cheeks.

D. This is the finest beer I've had from Jolly Pumpkin, and that's saying something.

Perseguidor is be the second best American sour beer I've ever had. The only trouble now is scoring more. A fantastic beer experience.

3.5 A: Pours dark brown, hazy and murky. A small head on the pour leaving just a skim. Some spotty lacing.

4.5 S: Good blend of the Noel and La Roja. Plenty of sour cherries with a dark malty base. A bit of added funk along with the sour and tart aromas. Not really getting anything from the stout.

4.5/2.0 T/M: Great sourness and pcukering tart cherries. Tartness is oustanding and at a very nice level. A bit more of the funk with some musty wet hay. The carbonation is way too low, unfortunately, making it feel pretty much flat. Body is medium to medium light and could really use the help of some carbonation.

4.0 D: Pretty drinkable but 12oz. would be enough for me.

Huge thanks to Chad(cpferris) for busting this out at our sour tasting. This review is for batch 4, 750ml.

Pours a deep dark brown that's pretty much black with a one finger light beige head that slowly fades into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.

Vinous earthy aroma with lots of dark fruit notes, especially sour dark cherry, grape, raisin and plum. Earthy oak tannis with a slight vinegary presence in the nose. Slightly malty with hints of chocolate and toffee laying underneath the vinous dark fruit notes.

Slightly puckering vinous moutfeel that is dry and tart with a lot of dark fruit notes lingering over a a slightly roasted chocolate malt backbone. I'm surprised hoe dark and malty this beer is considering all of the tart vinous wine barrel notes up front. These flavors dominate and linger throughout but are slightly countered by the subtle malt flavors. Sweet and vinegary with a dry bretty finish. Very complex and surpisingly drinkable. Very good.

On tap @ Buckeye Beer Engine's Summer Solstice sour tasting. Served a bit too cool into a snifter - about a 10 oz pour. Jason did really good by getting Ron to send him this. One of four kegs ever and the only one Ron hasn't served himself at festivals.

Darker than expected, little head but not still by any means. Smells like a sultrier La Roja - nice wild smell with a fruity base. A bit of cherry in the nose as well. Stout is evident in the nose as well.

Taste is out of this world. Wow - starts out with a strong wild sweet and sour rush. Then, this beer makes a unique turn into a now legendary place. A pronounced cherry leather note takes over. Some dark fruit and tobacco, fading into the typical sour and slightly acidic JP aftertaste. This was the most well crafted multi-dimensional sour I've had. Wow, as it warms up the taste becomes fluid and cohesive. Truly a masterpiece taste-wise.

Mouth is good. Not too crazy, but lively and perfect for the style. Drinkability was exceptional for a sour - could drink this all night! Thanks Jason for the opportunity! Nice work Ron!!!

Batch #4. I didn't realize this was going to be dark, but it looks like a stout, which makes sense as I know realize Madrugada Obscura was part of the blend. Small collar leaves very light lace.

Smell is robust and appetizing, big lactic bite, oaky, with a fruity sweetness.

Taste is very nice, a great sweet tart sourness dominates any roast, there's a hint of chocolate, and a nice dose of oak, bringing some coconut.

Mouthfeel is slick, medium bodied.

Drinkability is very good, a wow beer that's super smooth. It's also exceedingly rare (which I'm increasingly tiring of as the general availability of great craft beer continues to grow exponentially). Therefore, another one is not an option, in spite of the fact that I'd certainly enjoy it.

Appearance: Much darker than I expected, a bit shocking actually. Very dark brown-caramel. Completely flat - no lacing, foam, head, etc (this hurt the score substantially).

Smell: This one is incredibly complex, although there is a solid american oak backbone that almost dominates, but doesn't quite. Incredibly sour, but not as funky as I would prefer. There is a lso a very strong balsamic vinegar element, mixed with a little soy sauce. Some dark fruits and raisins well, but they hang mostly in the background.

Taste: Largely similar to the aroma. Incredibly complex, strong american oak up front followed by balsamic vinegar and light soy sauce. Very sour, but not enough funk. There is so much going on here that you just can't catch it all.

Mouthfeel: Bad marks here, this was flat. This doesn't bother me usually (see doesejel) but here it does.

Drinkability: Despite being flat, it disappeared due to the complexity of the brew. Hope to try this one again with some bubbles! Very nice wine-like quality though.

Batch 4 bottle from Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA - thanks to Gabe for cracking this one open.

Pours a dark bronze color with a half-finger off-white head. The head dissipates into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of tart fruits - dark berries and apples - with a solid amount of oak and a hint of darker fruits - raisins mostly.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Tart green apples with hints of raisins up front with a solid oak backbone. As it warms the funkiness comes out a bit more and the ending is mildly dry with a good tartness. Very clean and crisp.

Mouthfeel is very good. It has a nice thickness with grainy carbonation that's not too much nor too little.

Drinkability is great. I finished my glass quickly and could drink a lot of these.

Overall this is a very, very solid sour. The flavors are all crisp and manage not to get in the way of each other. Be sure to give this one a shot if it pops up.

On tap at Ashley's in Ann Arbor.

A: Rusty red, dark amber, and a ruby hint as well. A nice looking head that was about an inch thick.

S: Wow, JP doesn't slack on the sour and funk with this one. Dark fruits, sour grapes, tartness, apples, raisins, all of the above. What an outstanding smelling brew.

T: It tastes a lot like it smells. Tart fruits like grapes, apples, and raisins. But it's not all fruit. Towards the end a wild funk comes through along with JP's signature sour mouthfeel.

M: Medium to medium heavy mouthfeel. Real funky and sour like always. It just seems to coat your mouth from top to bottom. Medium carbonation that seemed to be just right.

D: Very very drinkable. The ABV was hidden very well and it seemed to be balanced throughout. I could seriously drink this stuff all night. It was so good I just wish I could have got more.

Overall, one of the best I've ever had from JP. I'm so happy Ashley's was able to snag a barrel so I was able to try some. I just wish it would have lasted longer than a weekend. Outstanding beer, even more outstanding style.

Bottle, batch4, that Josh shared at the tasting this past weekend. Thanks for knocking off this long time want, man! I'm going to have to seek out other batches.

The pour is dark brown with a thin reddish brown head that leaves no lacing. Retention is solid.

The nose is just outstanding. Funky, acetic stout is how I'd describe it. Chocolate and cocoa are apparent up front, but there's an acetic character and plenty of funk - musty, cobweb-like, mildly dusty. There's also some Belgian spiciness with yeast, a little nutmeg and a little cinnamon. A touch of vanilla too, perhaps? Excellent.

The palate is just wild. Plenty of acetic character from the Roja, there's a puckering acidity. Dry cocoa, dark fruit along with a mild spice, these characteristics aren't as noticeable as on the nose. The palate is dominated by the Roja, followed by the Obscura. Drying on the finish with a great acidity, this beer is medium in body with moderate carbonation and a great finish with lingering acidity, cocoa and a little funk. Great stuff, ISO!

12oz. bottle Batch 4: blend of La Roja, Madrugada and Noel poured into an oversized duvel tulip.

A-Pours a semi-opaque black color with very thin lacey head that retains very well even after several drinks. Carbonation appears to be medium with good lacing around the glass.

S-The smell of this beer is amazing! Having had Perseguidor 3, I would say this is the only trait that is better in 4. Insanely complex nose, smells of wood, funk, dried fruit, chestnuts and roasted malt. Overall, the most dominating smell is the funkiness with the smell of La Rojo as the most prevalent of the 3 beer in the blend.

T&M-somewhat thin, not at all what you would expect from a beer this color. Tastes of funky souness, very tart, with hints of dried fruit along with the taste of the barrel. Truely exceptional. When I poured this beer and smelled it I thought it would taste like a roasted sour type of stout. There is virtually no stout flavor, I tastes similar to an Old Bruin, but thiner and less acidic, a sipper to be sure do to the tartness, but very tasty.

D-Another great offering in this series, Captain Ron is a master at blending his styles. I'm not really a big fan of the Madrugada, so when I heard it was gonna be a part of this beer I had my doubts, but it works so nicely. A truely wonderful beer perfect for that cold winter night, but light enough to be enjoyed anytime.

Batch 4, 12oz bottle acquired in a trade with OHLRangers. Poured into my lost abbey tulip, the beer is very dark, almost black. The beige head is half an inch high and recedes quickly.

The aroma is tart, with some lactic notes. Dark fruits are evident in the beer. Ripe plums, black cherries, figs, and currants. The malt comes through with some nice chocolate notes. A gentle swirl of the glass brings out the tartness a bit more. This is a blend of La Roja, Madrugada Obscura, and Noel de Calabaza, and they all play a part in the complex nose.

The flavor is dominated by tart black cherries, currants, and plums. Perseguidor batch 4 has chocolate notes that add a subtle sweetness to the medium level of sourness. The beer is initially moderately tart, which segues into sweeter fruits and minimal chocolate notes, and finally finishes a bit tarter than it began. Oak notes are apparent throughout.

P4 is medium bodied with a low level of carbonation and a vinous mouthfeel.

Big Thanks to TampaBrew for this one.

A: Pours a nice deep rich dark brown hue. The tan head rises and dies rather quickly.

S: Lots of sour for sure. Dark fruit, roasted malt, tart cherries, and oak hide beneath.

T: Wonderful beer no doubt about that. Lots of under ripe black cherry. Hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Under ripe black grapes and vanilla make an appearence. A big blast of oak really compliments the sourness. Really really good beer.

M: Medium in body, smooth, subtle carbonation which helped to carry the flavor.

D: Very good. Wish I had a few of these gems in my cellar.

Thanks to the all generous Frank for helping me and my friends out. Part I of our graduation beer tasting. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip glass. Split 3 ways.

Batch 4

A- Pours a cola brown with a grayish-white head. Produced a fingers width of head, slightly soapy. Some lacing as the beer was consumed.

S- Very akin to a flanders or oud bruin. Oak and cherries throughout, which produced an acetic aroma. Not too complex and slightly one dimensional. Not enough funk!

T- Interesting indeed. Cross between a traditional sour (55%) and a flanders (45%). Slightly acetic, especially in the end. Lots of cherry flavors with oak backbone. Picked up a tiny bit of chocolate. Very balanced and restrained.

M- Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. Left the palate semi-dry.

D- Went down very easily because of the balance in the flavors. Could easily put away one of these bottles on my own.

Overall, this beer lived up to its reputation. Easily the best JP sour I have had so far. Highly recommended.

Thanks to cooljosh for breaking this one out of the cellar for our epic tasting. Beer number 15 overall. Number 6 of day 2. Thanks again, man. Bottle was from batch 4.

The color certainly isn't what I was expecting. As I find out more about this beer from's blended from Roja and Obscura, well that makes more sense. The color is nearly black with a nice ruby brown hue to the edges. Spots of lace adorn the glass after I swirl.

The aroma is chocolatey and Belgian yeast-spicy, filled with dark fruits, and an almost vinegar-like acidic sourness. There is a slight funk, but the pediomyces out-kicks the brett. The dates and figs really come through nicely on the palate. They mix nicely with the spices. Dark chocolate takes a backstage role, only filling in where it is needed. The funk is more pronounced, but still less so than the vinegary sourness.

The chocolate and the spice really add another element to this sour. The complexity of Perseguidor is phenomenal and compelling. However, I would have preferred a bit more funk and a little less vinegary acidity.

A wonderful bottle of batch #4 courtesy of none other then the man himself, drjay! I have been dying to get ahold of this beer for the longest time, and now that I have it, I waste little time. Served at cellar temp and poured into an oversized wine glass, this one was consumed on 01/17/2009.

The pour was very dark. A very dark brown color coming through immediatly, with no light coming through what so ever. No lacing, no head, no foam, no nothing on this one at all.

The aroma was amazingly complex. Rich notes of oak, sour fruits, funky everything. As it warms some muted hops, light spices and a wonderufl mix of everything but the kitchin sink with deep vinegar like tones throughout. The flavor was wnderful. Puckeringly bitter as each sip seemed more complex then the one before it. Rich notes of apple vingar, sweet candy like sugars, rich woody notes, and a hint of raisin like spices. Really just a marvel of complexity here. Smooth, mellow carbonation throughout, and an easy smooth drinkablity that let me sip on this one throughout the night .

Overall one of the best wildd ales I have had. Really very complex and rich with every flavor a bit better then the one before that. I would love to try this one again anyday

Batch 4: blend of La Roja, Madrugada and Noel.

Black body, larger tan bubbles from an aggressive pour, a slim film forms on the surface then subsides, leaving a ring of irregular bubbles around the rim. Served at 52º into a Duchesse glass.

Lactic aromas, vinous red wine, balsamic notes. Fairly clean and not too funky by JP standards. Soft notes of wood and leather in the background. Tart in the initial sips, with dried currant/blackberry or black cherry, mild roast malt in the middle, dry oaky tannic bitterness in the finish. Low carbonation brings it closer in feel to a Shiraz. Pepper, dark fruit, leather, and tobacco notes seem to dominate. A mild earthy wildness that never manifests into full-on funkiness. Dry and sippable, very complex, definitely one to savor.

Right up there with Earthmonk, Haandbakk, and Oerbier Reserva.
