Type: 12-oz. bottle
Reviewed as: Munich Helles Lager
Glass: Clear 16-oz. Bruges beer glass
Price: $9.99 for a mixed 12-pack (4 different beers)
From: Trader Joe’s in College Area (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: May 5, 2022
Consumed: May 5, 2022
Misc.: 12-pack packaged on Dec. 6, 2021; Best by July 2022; Bottled on Dec. 1, 2021 at 5:34 a.m. ET; Best by June 30, 2022

Saw this variety 12-pack (four different beers) at Trader Joe’s and had to grab it. It’s not often I see Saranac in San Diego but it brings me back to my home roots of New York. Could only see the box and saw that it was best by July 2022 but missed the packaged date of Dec. 6, 2021 via Julian code. Woof. So decided only to review the Kolsch and the Helles Lager, and just to drink the pale ale and hazy IPA. Untappd called this “Easy drinking and oh-so smooth, this every day drinking Lager is sure to help you find your happy place.”

Poured a medium yellow clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy off-white head. Plenty of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass at different speeds. Very good foggy watery lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled grain, wheat bread, caramel, toffee, honey, cough syrup, unsalted Wheat Thins, herbal, menthol, wet grass, Noble hops and hints of black pepper. About the same from the bottle. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste wasn’t as good as the nose. In order got grain, caramel, toffee, honey graham cracker, wheat bread, unsalted Wheat Thins, herbal, menthol, wet grass, Noble hops, black pepper, spoiled fruit and earthy malt. Kind of reminded me of an ESB. (Taste - 3.50)

Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, dry, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Underrated this slightly but it was good. Would still have some more of this. (Overall - 3.75)

Golden Yellow with a 1/2" white head, which fades to a wisp. Light lacing.

Aroma of bread, light citrus.

Taste is malty, bready, light lemon.

Light body, moderate carbonation. Dry finish.

A nice mild hot weather thirst quencher.

Found in the "Spring Forward" pack. Best by July

L: 4. Brilliant clarity. Ample carbonation. Enticing gold body with a lingering creamy white head.
S: 3.5. Floral German hops. Light on malt.
T: 4.25. This is great. Like really, really great. Everything I was hoping for really. Very clean lager taste. Well balanced. Crisp.
F: 4. Light mouthfeel.
O: 4. I would buy this by the 36 pack given the option. Highly recommended.
