Stout of Jefferson
Growler fill from the brewery
The taproom at this brewery is a large space in the front of the warehouse set aside for tasting and displaying a small but growing beer paraphernalia collection. A large window looks out on the brewery proper. They sell growlers with the Weed Ales and Lagers logo and have started offering some beers in a 22oz bottle. More 22's will become available next year. The brewers are extremely cool and we got several tasters for free while we chatted them up about beer and life.
This particular beer was brewed on 11/11/07 with 1,100 pounds of grain and 1.1 pounds of Nugget hops added every 11 minutes during the hopping process, then dry hopped with more Nugget hops and a touch of orange peel. If I remember correctly, it's 7.4% ABV and 55 IBU's.
Looks like a stout should. A smallish, burnt-cream head lingered a while with some nice clingy lacing; each taste was recorded on the inside of the glass all the way to the bottom. Aromas of coffee and dank hops are most prevalent with some mild chocolate. I could really smell the dry hopping action on first impression. Strong chocolate flavors, particularly baker's chocolate, are followed by a nice backbone of pleasantly astringent hops, smooth dark malt, and pure Mount Shasta spring water. This is a good stout for people who really like hops. A citrus tartness and sweetness is discernable in the background, accompanied by a somewhat thin mouthfeel. It's good to see these guys branching out and brewing new styles. I've always been a huge fan of their porter. This would age nicely.

Named after the "almost" 49th State of Jefferson.
Pours a deep dark flat black color, with a rocky tan head, tons of sticky lacy on this one.
Aromas are coffee and pine like.
Taste is a bit different than the smells. Lost of chocolate flavors, mostly bitter dark bakers chocolate, some creamy malts, and a touch of pine bitterness on the finish.
Mouthfeel is ok, but a bit to thin for what I expect from a Stout.
Drinkability is good. It's a tasty, and not an over the top stout. I don't think this one has a ton of alcohol, and more than one in a seating would be very doable.
