I've never participated in this, so here goes.

From Oliphant Brewing out of Somerset Wisconsin comes Ifeelcream:dlfl 8% ABV

It is an amber ale brewed with lactose and apricots.

It is more of a brown color than an amber colored beer. The head is fairly thick, and does last a long time. The nose you really get apricots.

Taste - You get the apricot and the lactose all the way from start to the aftertaste. There's a slight hint of a standard amber ale taste, but the other flavors are more powerful.

    4 out of 5

I'll have to check if this one is in the database, if not, it will be.

I can't put it better than the bottle does "dark, rich, and sexy" I'll definitely have a few more of these!

Belgian Strong Pale Ale / 11.00% ABV

    4.25/5 rDev +10.7% | Avg: 3.84
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

    Bottle reads Batch No. 1 Levud's 9.6% ABV, B # 1608, 7/14/15

A: Pours a honey orange color with bright white fluffy head, lots of carbonation, cloudy, not much head retention.

A: Belgian yeast, coriander, spice, cloves, banana, pretty straight forward aromas.

T: Belgian yeast, coriander, cloves, bananas, getting lots of bitterness, I'm guessing the bitterness is from the hops, but it's spicy not citrus forward, big dry finish with more spice and coriander like notes coming through, alcohol is well hidden, this is really good.

M: Medium bodied, heavily carbonated, fluffy, dry finish

O: I think this is a great example of a Belgian strong pale ale, not sure if my bottle is matching some of the other batches, but I think this is outstanding, complex, has depth, lots of different notes and alcohol is barely noticeable for 9.6%.

And I'm back. Some friends and I had a bottle share yesterday, to celebrate my upcoming birthday. Lots of beers were opened, and some details are a bit foggy, but a couple of the highlights were the Sonoma series beers from Russian River, a bretted ISA from a local brewery, and 2012 Doggie Claws from HotD.

My second new Kulshan entry is a smooth Brown Ale, Mountain Beaver: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28281/199704/

Back for another as I chill on the couch watching football in the cave. The night temperature is dropping fast and a fire is needed tonight to warm the bones. Sounds like a great night for a winter ale! A friend gave me a couple bottles last week to try, so I decided on the Goose Island Experimental Ale - Winter 2015. It states Celia and Millennium hops, an abv. of 6.2%, and a bottle date of 10/Oct./15 on the label. Let's pour this into my Goose snifter and check it out!

It pours a ruby red with a quarter inch of light tan foam. It has an aroma that is predominantly mulling spice forward with some caramel. The flavor is caramel, mulling spices, some mild bubblegum and pepper in the finish. The feel starts on the slick and oily side and finishes bitter and quite dry.

Overall it's pretty typical of the winter warmer style. The biggest drawback for me was the bitterness in the finish. It got to be a little over the top as I worked my way through the bottle. Glad I had a chance to try, but I'll move on in the future. My score was a 3.62 / rDev -3.2%.

Time for some much needed rest after a busy weekend. Have a great week gang!

Good evening, NBS! Late entry here but I've been outside raking leaves for what seems like an eternity (two days). I hope the DPW crew eats their Wheaties tomorrow, because the amount of leaf bags waiting outside my house for pickup is insane! Needless to say, once I was finished raking, it was time for a new beer, and something strong at that!

I've been in the habit lately of trying different beer and cheese combinations and, after reading about how well imperial stouts go with blue cheese, was excited to give this one a try.

Today's new beer is Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout (paired with Jasper Hill Bayley Hazen Blue cheese).

12 oz. bottle; bottled on Aug 10, 2015.

Black in color, opaque, with a two-finger, creamy, dark tan/brown head. Good head retention and a fair amount of lacing.

Heavy roasted/burnt malt aroma with plenty of chocolate and coffee. Not much complexity at all.

Taste follows the malty aroma but throws in a bunch of hops, which cause an intense bittersweet finish that lingers for a while.

Medium-full bodied. Thick texture despite the lively carbonation.

Overall, this is a straightforward, aggressively hopped, imperial stout. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in balance and just simple, good flavor. Make no mistake though, it's a big beer that hides its 9.5% ABV very well, so it can sneak up on you. Paired really well with the blue cheese.

    Look 4.00 / Smell 4.00 / Taste 4.25 / Feel 4.00 / Overall 4.25

    Final Score 4.15. Cheers!

    New Choconut Sunday

A little late to this party due to another Sunday that found me at Hoof Hearted Brewing. I got to share plenty of new beers there including an Alpine Duet thanks to @SomethingClever, and one of the stars of the gigantic bottle share, Chocolate Rain thanks to @SanFranJake. This is the only one I had time to take some notes on today. If memory serves correct, I think I like The Brew Kettle's Kitka a little better, but this one is very enjoyable

Looks lovely. A big fluffy dark brown head sits on top of the black beer like whipped cream on pumpkin pie.

Smells predominantly like coconut. Good start. There is some faint cocoa too, but so far it is truth in advertising.

Guess what it tastes like... I hope you guessed coconut. If not, you are either too drunk or aren't really paying attention. It is non-sweet with a nice amount of Swiss Miss like milk chocolate. A little bit of lingering sweetness, but not very sweet at all overall.

The body is fairly flaky/chewy. Reminds me a bit of a Sixpoint 4 Beans. Still a thinner, easy drinking body with a creamy mouthfeel.

This is an excellent beer. It is not overbearing in any way. If you like coconut, I can't imagine not enjoying this one. It tastes very natural.

Fridge clearing meets New Beer Sunday as I move on to my third new beer of the day. It's Boulevard's Saison-Brett, which was a pain in the ass to pour with a ton of sudsy head that required a lot waiting before I could get to drinking:

    4.18/5 rDev -2.6%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

750mL bottle poured into a Belgian flute.

We've got a gusher. Tons of sudsy foam. I have to pour and wait and pour and wait. And I'm still waiting. The body appears similar to pear or apricot juice, ruddy and unfiltered orange/copper. Closer to the stem some blonde hues show. 4

A bright floral bouquet on the nose with some peppery spice and a tart, Brett-y, slightly chalk-like element. There's some fruit aroma that reminds me of pears too. 4

This flavor gets things on track in a major way though. Sweet floral notes, peppery spice, light pear, and sugary sweetness. The flavors are varied and still work highly well together. 4.25

Peppery, juicy, white-wine like, sweet and floral. Many a sensation. Add light tartness and a dry, zesty finish. Throughout is a wine-like quality. 4.25

Besides the nuisance of the pours/foam and and the slightly underwhelming nose, this beer tastes and drinks excellently. A great brew.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us rolling today. I went to visit my mom in Fargo ND this weekend. Landed @ 6 and got home @ 8 with some really surprisingly smooth traffic this evening. Glad they didn't delay me for 2 hours like on Friday morning. I did a brewery crawl at Fargo Brewing, Drekker in Fargo ND; and Junkyard in Moorhead MN.

I made a nice big haul of new beers as well. Pretty much anything that interested me that I couldn't get. Ratings be damned(but also did get some highly rated ones ). I packed a 31 lb box of bottles and a 15 lb box of cans last night, and my mom dropped them off at FedEx after I got to the airport. Having a shipment account is nice, because they could just charge me for the shipping without me even being there. Also rolled up a 4 pack of Surly Abrasive and a mix 6 pack of Fargo cans into my clothes in my luggage, all made it back unscathed as expected. I ran out of space after a 14x14x14 box for the other cans. It was a really fun weekend, and I would definitely go back. There was also a brand new meadery that opened in May this year, so you know I just have to check that out sometime.

Also, the results of my haul will give me Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota on my state total; bringing me up to 44. I found a can of Pile o Dirt Porter from Crow Peak in South Dakota, and it was literally the only one I saw from that state on the shelf. Thought I would never get SD off the list. I guess West Virginia will be the real challenge now :grinning:

    Here are today's new beers:

Really great black IPA! Appearance was incredible. Deep dense soapy lacing down the glass, and a lasting rocky head; crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted bread, light smoke/char, and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Good sized pine/citrus rind and roasted bitterness; with a very crisp and resinous/sticky hop finish; with a touch of roast malt chalkiness in the mouthfeel. Nice dry finish with lasting hop resins and no astringeny from bitterness. Very smooth and drinkable. Wow, really impressed with this one. Really bright citrusy/piney hoppiness; but still has a nice presence of roasty malt complexity in balance, even though the finish is really dry. I would definitely buy this again. There really aren't too many readily available black IPAs I know of year round. My normal Odd Side and Short's favorites are seasonals. 4.16
    [IMG]

2 year old, pre-aged thanks to Shelton Brothers; picked up 2 weeks ago. Wow, fantastic stuff! Minimal head but the lacing stuck around in the glass the whole time. Aromas and flavors of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, raisin, prune, licorice, vanilla, char, leather, herbal, wood, and light smoke. Good amount of herbal and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with a very full bodied creamy/silky finish with a fair amount of sticky/chalkiness from hop and deep roast malts. Nice bitter/sweet roast balance as well. Light carbonation but still goes down very smoothly; only a light warmth present on the finish; zero booze. Highly impressive with a very wide range of complexity from malts, hop, and yeast notes across the board. Deep roast maltiness is the main focus in the flavors; with the dark fruitiness and wood/herbal character being accents to the base. Awesome! 4.2
    [IMG]

Wow, absolutely incredible! Aromas and flavors of huge peach, tangerine, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine; with some light-moderate honey/bready malt sweetness and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Nice moderate amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness; with a moderately crisp finish with balanced hop stickiness and light malt creaminess in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness. A touch above medium bodied; but still very well attenuated with no overly malty notes in the flavors. Overall, nothing but bright and juicy tropical paradise across the board. Mosaic hops killing it once again. 4.32

    Greetings All:

Checking in late on the NBS hoping the Seahawks can save the season. Must win tonight.

Cleaning out the DBF I found this relic from summer. Brass Monkey from No-Li.
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/936/171421/?ba=RJLarse

I'm not sure it's a summer ale, but at 8.0 ABV it went over well on this chilly fall evening.

So must win for SEA, and down 8 in the 3rd quarter. Locked in for the rest of this one.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!!

Yeah, my wife is quite the fan of marzens. Each year she loves it when I stock up on Sam Adam's Oktoberfest. But, I think she likes even more that I find other offerings each year. This year she liked Left Hand's Oktoberfest, but the GI Oktoberfest was her new favorite.
