Another long weekend of a beautiful weather worked in the books. Seems like my off days are always crap weather. Hoping for better luck.

Thanks to @boralyl for this NB! The Pathfinder from Breakside Brewery. Never had a gin barrel aged beer. Have been looking forward to this one since I pulled it out if the box.

Deep golden pour, rusty highlights and a soapy, lacing head. Lemon peels and pith, florals and juniper berries on the nose. Definitely smells like gin. Not heavy though.
Taste is citrus, bready malts, more juniper straight up gin flavors. Good medium mouthfeel, leaves a tingly feeling of gin. It's slightly overpowering for me as I'm not a huge gin fan. But I go back for more sip after sip. It's an interesting beer for sure.

Alright, well the silver lining to Porter having headed north is that now when I clean the apartment, at least it will stay presentably clean for more than a couple of minutes. I love that dog more than anything else in the world, but maaaaan she sheds.

Divided By Zero is an "Imperial-Session, Pale-Black India Pale Ale" per the can. Per my assessment (and I assess for a living!) it is the first of each of those hyphenated things and decidedly not the second. Part of the box @TongoRad sent along as part of that Knife-Monkey thing we did

The pour is... fine, I guess? Some particulate action a decent little head that settles easily and leaves nice lacing. Cool.
Let's just pick it up and start to smel- MAN OH MAN! So this just jumps down your nostril with a veritable fruit salad of delicious hops. I had the 'peach' ale a little bit ago, but this one actually offers some semblance of that stone fruit, along with tons of tropical and citrus fruits as well. Papaya, guava, tangerine, acidic orange, blossoms... I really like the aromatic presentation of this one.

That nose belies a different beast underneath, though. The heart of this beer is a piercingly bitter nod towards classics of my coast. Sharply acidically bitter at its core, there is a soft blush of those fruits still occupying the outer layers, but make no mistake, the flavour here belongs to big bitter hops.
Mosaic and Simcoe you say? With some Citra? The first two stand out more pronouncedly to my novice palate, and are each harnessed to the peak of what they have to offer.
    Good shit. Thanks Michael!

Khaled is such a fucking goober (still better than Rick Ross, though [not that that's saying much]).

    But Nas.

Happy NBS to all. A chilly and windy - yet quite enjoyable - fall day here in NJ. The wind this weekend has been out of control, ripping the leaves off the trees and blanketing the front and back yards. Lots of yard work in my future!

Great to see both the Indians and Cubs in the World Series. I'm a huge Yankees fan, which automatically rubs people the wrong way apparently (they are the local team for some of us), but I'm an even bigger fan of baseball in general. A championship will be a great thing for either one of those fanbases. Should be a fun one to watch.

Today's new beer was a no-brainer purchase for me. You don't see too many dunkelweizens on the shelves these days but it's a style I really enjoy. Combine that with the fact that it's brewed as a seasonal by a semi-local brewery, and available in packs of 16 oz cans, I had to give it a try.

    Neshaminy Creek Dunks Ferry Dunkelweizen

Real nice color on this one. Deep amber, ruby, light brown. Good clarity but I couldn't tell if there was any yeast at the bottom of the can to add in like you would a typical bottled hefeweizen. One of the cons of a canned beer? Thick creamy off-white head with good retention.

Aroma is a mild, yet intriguing, mix of fruit and spice with some rich malt presence. Banana, clove, bready malt, hints of bubble gum and vanilla. There is a strong resemblance to banana bread in both the aroma and flavor that I really love.

Lively carbonation and medium bodied. Very easy to drink. The rich malt makes this beer work really well as a fall seasonal. Cheers!

New Berliner Weissbier Sunday (week 609)
Back drinking yet another from the stupid amount of beers in the BIF boxes from @2beerdogs It is indeed a beer made with cucumber, and it seems from the reviews I read after posting mine that I liked it far less than others. Could be you will like it too, but I got too much the taste of pickles and salad and not enough bracingly tart refreshment that I enjoy in a Berliner Weisse. Get the whole story here

So glad you discovered Resin! It is, no kidding, my go-to on-the-shelf DIPA. It's fantastically drinkable, and, as you remarked, not at all overly fruity or citrusy. Just a piney, aggressive, bitter, yet somehow easy drinking DIPA. And then at that price point? Only DirtWolf and Southern Tier 2XIPA come close to being affordable DIPA daily drinkers (and I'll personally take Resin 4 times out of 5 over DirtWolf, and I can never seem to find 2XIPA fresh, so that's a moot point).

I've sung its praises here on BA so often people probably think I'm a @Sixpoint shill.

    Cheers, man!

Happy "drink a new beer" day, NBSers, and thank you to @utopiajane for launching this party once again. This past week, I was the beneficiary of a second box from @beerloserLI in the NBS BIF MWK hootenanny that has been going on for nearly a couple of months now. Receiving this 2nd box was like winning the lottery and then, a couple weeks later, having the lottery director show up at your house and tell you, "In addition to winning the lottery, you just won a new Corvette. And a Mercedes for your wife." Except your wife doesn't really like the Mercedes (substituted for "great beer"), so you get to drive both.

Seriously, this 2nd box was a HOF box. I'm going to share 3 beers from the box with you tonight. First up, this magnificent DIPA .....

This pours a turbid straw color with a finger+ of ever so slightly off-white head. It reminds of a REALLY pulpy grapefruit juice.

Aromas of orange and grapefruit are predominant, but there's a subtle sweetness which is welcome. The taste is chock full of grapefruit rind and oranges, and there's some sweet fruit as well. The feel is a bit thick, but overall, this is a world-class DIPA. Rated 4.48.

Next up, it's Porter time .....

What an excellent representation of the style. A jet black pour with tinges of red around the edges and a 2-finger tan head, I'm waiting for the malt onslaught.

And I'm impressed as the aroma and taste carry huge amounts of cocoa and coffee. How the brewery gets all this flavor into a 4.7% ABV beer is beyond me, but I'm thankful they did. Rated 4.17.

Finally, this outstanding IPL (also from Greenport) .....

With a name like Amaizing IPL, you'd expect corn to play a significant role in this beer, and it does, from the appearance to the aroma and on through the taste.

This looks and smells like an IPA, but there's a crispness to it that reveals the lager characteristics. The taste is HEAVY juicy hops, with immense citrus flavors - and balanced by the sweetness from the corn. Really enjoyable, especially as a summer beer, I'd drink this all the time if I had access to it. Rated 4.35.

Have a stupendous Sunday, NBS friends. And thanks again, Brian - these are magnificent beers. And I think the best one is still in my beer fridge (Even Mo Mofo), which is why the beer gods created "New Beer Monday."

I've long held the opinion that Giants fans and Jets fans are 180 degrees apart. As a complete and unfair generalization, Giants fans are reasonable and fun and rational. Jets fans are $h!+heads. :stuck_out_tongue: I joke, kind of. I understand booing Dan Marino's HOF induction; he was a rival. But Jerry Rice? THE GOAT? Who wasn't a rival of any kind, never played against them in a Super Bowl...nothing! They booed Jerry because he was awesome, and they were miserable.

I've never "gotten" Jets fans, and I never will. Many fan bases have their own generalized characterizations. Jets fans' characterization is: they suck.

(As to Yankees fans: like Sox fans, they're hit or miss. Some are certainly insufferable, but I've met my fair share who are great baseball fans.)

Greetings All from the Great Northwest, where the day has been spent brewing the last of the Holiday Ales and waiting for the Seahawk game to start.

Today we have the Maple Dunkel from Chippewa Falls.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/710/244100/

Over sweet and not real well balanced, but it's about what I expected. Part of a Fall Sampler 12-pack. Probably couldn't sell this stuff on its own.

So the last holiday batch goes in the fermenter tonight, in bottles just before Thanksgiving and then we shut down the home brewery for the holidays. But we light it up again right at New Years brewing the spring and summer ales. I do most of my brewing in January/February and September/October. This year there is a spiced porter that looks promising, and a sweet stout that looks like a bit of a disappointment. We'll see.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

That's kind of similar to my own twisted route of sports fandom.

Growing up in Miami, we had the Dolphins, the Hurricanes, and...that's it. The Bucs over in Tampa. Zero other professional sports in the state.

Eventually, we had the Heat, Magic, Panthers, Marlins, Jaguars. However, when I was a kid, baseball was still king. Every boy traded baseball cards, followed baseball passionately, memorized the stats. The NFL was very peripheral on my attention.

The Braves were a 14 hour drive away, and they were quite literally the nearest baseball team. So, I never had much "hometown" loyalty. Had I grown up a football fan first, that might have been different (I'm still passionately devoted to my hometown 'Canes and Heat). But that was not the case.

Thus, I followed any number of baseball teams over the years, based on the players: David Cone, Bobby Bonilla, Dwight Gooden. Finally, Mark McGwire, who made me an A's, then Cards, fan (Dave Duncan and Tony LaRussa going there certainly helped the transition). Once Big Mac was ready to step aside, in came Pujols, who has just been a wonderful player to root for. I just happened to stay a Cards fan.

I also move a lot: I left Miami in 1991; I've spent 5 years in Tampa (over two trips); and I've spent 9 years in CT, all told (among other, briefer stops). So it's easy for me to become a fan of local teams. I became a Niners fans in the mid-80s, and never looked back; I started rooting for the Pats after spending 5 years up here (but not over the Dolphins or especially the Niners); I'll root for the Celtics or Bruins (but not over the Heat and Lighting).

But there's no rabid home-grown loyalty, because...well, again, those teams literally didn't exist for me to root for growing up. It's not Southern Florida apathy. People mistake that sometimes: "The fans don't care." It's not that; it's that we have no history, and for a long time, no teams to root for. The teams closest to my heart are my Niners, Heat, and Canes - and two of those are hometown teams, naturally.

Well, that's quite the sports diversion, with nary a mention of new beer. :flushed: Good thing plenty of fine NBSers are picking up the slack today. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us rolling this morning. Made more new beer hauls this week, so I will be busy for a while. Down to the last 2 cans from @oline73 BIF box already. Had a Red Agnes earlier and it completely blew me away. Just as good as Black Agnes IMO. Back to the morning grind again tomorrow. Just finished up the laundry a bit ago, its been a madhouse down there. Everyone does theirs on Sundays as well it seems.

    New Beers:

Another home run winner! Aromas and flavors of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, and pine hops; moderate wheat, biscuit, honey malts; and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, grassy, citrus peel bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced hop stickiness and grainy wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel. Lightly resinous, with increasing dryness from hop oils; but never astringent. Super bright/juicy, and insanely drinkable. Love Simcoe hops. As anticipated with the Simcoe, this was a bit more resinous, piney, and drying than some of the other ones I had previously. The Melcher is still top dog with the Mosaic overall. Have DDH Fort Point left, and that's all of the BIF box. 4.37
    [IMG]

Great stuff! Fantastic head retention and dense lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and ginger; with balanced caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, and light chocolate/vanilla sweetness. Light-moderate herbal/pine/spice bitterness on the finish. Medium-full bodied; nice creamy/bready mouthfeel with light hop/spice stickiness. Lightly drying finish. No hop or spice astringency. Insanely drinkable, mildly warming 9% ABV. Really big fan of this one! Really well rounded and balanced between spice and malts. Nice complexity. No complaints at all! 4.03
    [IMG]

Surprised it's not in the database for this one. Griffin Claw released this a while ago, just hit the stores for this year's batch. BBA aged American Brown ale with coffee beans. This is outstanding! Aromas and flavors of huge caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes of nutty coffee, chocolate, and dark fruity yeast notes. Light hop/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spice on the finish. Medium-full bodied; awesome creamy/silky mouthfeel; slight roast/oaky sticky dryness. Wow! For 9 bucks a bomber, this provides the full package for any BBA beer fan. Very rich and robust, with a ton of barrel flavor; without being boozy or even warming(5.5%). Love it, will buy again soon! 4.25

It's a lot easier to "hate on" 31 teams than just be sad for your one . I only truly hate on one - and it's almost getting to the point that it's in jest . But that disdain is for the team itself, not the fans, really. Sure, there are asshole fans - but they're probably assholes first .

Exactly my point, though I disagree even with excusing Dan Marino's HOF induction. For instance, I'll be happy to say, "well deserved" and applaud when Jeter and Mariano go in. At least I think I will be able to do that . I definitely won't boo, though.

Yeah, I also was not a fan. I hate vegetables in general, so I wasn't expecting much. But, I had heard so much positive hype about this beer, before the sell-out, that when I finally saw it locally, after the sell-out, I violated my own boycott and tried it. Man, did I hate that beer. I choked down the whole pint (and I mean choked, I made them sell me an IPA, and traded sips. Jeeeebuzzz, that was a tough beer to down), but, never again.
