This is incredible. I can't believe they brewed a beer with 10% abv that's still dominated by Tropical, fruity, hop goodness. Mind blown.

Happy NBS. Trying to keep my spirits up in the dead of winter, We have had almost no sunlight for the entire month of January, and it looks like it will remain that way until Groundhog's day. At least the ground is covered in snow again, so I don't have to look and brown grass and dirt.

As is a tradition on mine, I am enjoying Central Waters previous Anniversary beer. I always drink the Anniversary beers with one year of age. On with the review!

Color is like coal with a thin 1 finger tan hear. Quick retention and a few spots of lacing. Typical for for these. The aroma is ripe with bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate, cocoa, marshmallow and thick caramel. The taste is more like 16 than 17. A splash of bourbon, vanilla with some dark fruit filled dark chocolates. A decent amount of oak, caramel, and light earthiness. Medium body with creamy, smooth feel. Carbonation is spot on. I don't remember if this was as good as 16, but it I did enjoy it more than 17.

Poured from a 12oz can. No date, but it came directly from the taproom

It is a dark gold color. A little foggy, but predominantly clear. There was a thin, wispy, soapy white head that dissipated very quickly into a very thin ring.

The aroma is coffee beans, rye, and pilsner like grains.

The coffee is the dominant flavor that comes through, but not completely overpowering. After an initial dark roast taste up front, there is a substantial amount of spicy rye. There is also a noticeable hop profile that is somewhere between a Pilsner and a Marzen. Very floral and biting, only with more bitterness that I don't believe to be from the coffee. Probably the Columbus hops noted. It finishes with a lingering rye flavor and some bitterness.

The body is not what I would consider crisp like the can says. It has a bit of a dry finish, but it is fairly heavy bodied for having pale and pilsner malts. It has a nice combination of fullness and carbonation. There is just a ton of rye in there that seems to give it some heft.

This beer is very reminiscent of Hoss from Great Divide with the addition of some coffee. The coffee adition is a little stronger in comparison to the base than with Wolf's Ridge Clear Sky Daybreak for my Ohio friends, but still a nice complimenting flavor. Highly recommended.

Good afternoon to all the NBS followers and once again thanks to Maria for the great send off as usual. I am sorry to say I missed last Sunday just way to much going on here at home in central NH. We received a call from the breeder we got our Mastiff from asking if we could take in one of Diesel's litter mates due to some health problems suffered by her owner. Needless to say it has been a couple of weeks with lots of adjustments due to both dogs being raised alone since they were puppies. With the help of a great animal behaviorist I think this may finally be close to working out and the squabbles have stopped. As if our 230# male wasn't enough adding a 170# female to the mix was a huge adjustment for us all. I think we are finally getting to the point where we can leave them alone and still have a house left when we get home.

No on the easy part for this week which is my new beer for this Sunday. It comes to me from PA and the Draai Laag Brewery in Millvale. It is La Pienture.
    and here is my review.
This beers pours a muddy brownish orange color into my tulip glass. Light foamy head that disappears quickly.
Lots of stuff in the nose with the tartness coming through strong. Has that flanders red type of nose. Sour but lots of funk going on here.
The taste is sour but the black cherry comes through nicely. Lots of earthy overtones and some good flavor from the barrel aging. This is supposed to 8% ABV but that is totally hidden in the blend of flavors.
There is a good amount of carbonation in this beer and last through the glass.
In all this is a good solid beer and I think perhaps a little more age will improve the flavors even more.

Well time to take the dogs out for a little play time and perhaps if all goes well I may make it back with another beer later today.

Another 2 new beers Sunday, this week both are from Brotherton Brewing in Shamong NJ down in the Pine Barrens. Both beers were on tap.
Beer #1 Brotherton IPA is 6.6 ABV 46 IPU. and unfiltered. The beer is a hazy golden color with a nice white head that laces well. The aroma is strong of citrus The taste is cirta hops with a small amount of malt. There is a nice dry finish. An excellent IPA one of the best being brewed in NJ.
Beer # 2 Brotherton ESB is 4.2% ABV and 18 IBU. Brotherton calls this an ESP but could call it a mild if they wanted to. This is a very drinkable brew. It's redish brown in color with a off white head. The taste is bready malts and is a tiny bit sweet. Mouth feel is full. There is a small hop kick also. The hops used are called Brambling Cross. The Finish is off dry. This is about as close to a session beer as I've drank. Excellent brew.
I've had 3 Brotherton beers now the first one was Drip Down IPA.. All 3 of them are top notch. They are on their way to becoming one of the best breweries in NJ if they aren't one already.

New beer for me a Citra PA from Bombshell Beer Co in Holly Springs NC.

This is really quite the prototypical Citra Ale, fairly low Abv, could use a bit more malt to make it a bit richer to drink. I bought it in a small growler primarily off the smell, like most things Citra I get hooked. It's a decent enough beer the earth won't move, but it's easy drinking.

Happy NBS to all! Pretty relaxing day, but I need to get my chicken chili started soon so I'll just get right down to the beer. Today's new beer is a new style for me: the Scottish Ale. Technically, this is a Scottish Export... Not to be confused with a Scotch Ale or Wee Heavy. Always fun to get to try a new style on this great beer journey.

    Belhaven Scottish Ale

    14.9 oz can.

Pours deep amber in color with a cascading effect - thanks to the nitro can - that eventually gives way to a brilliantly clean body. Small, creamy off-white head that shows great retention throughout the duration of the beer. Sparse lacing on the glass.

Toasted malt aroma that is somewhat mild and subdued. Caramel, toffee, and cocoa round things out. No sign of hops to speak of. The flavor packs a ton of rich malt flavor and is heavier than the aroma would suggest. It's bready and toasty with the slightest hint of fruit, possibly from the hops, but the focus is completely on the malt.

Medium bodied, it feels a little thin for the amount of malt flavor it has to support. Finishes a little dry with almost zero carbonation and a creamy texture.

Cheers, BAs! Have a great Sunday.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Open Other End Jan 13th 2017.

Pale orange and slightly turbid body appearance with a good amount of fine carbonation rising through the glass. Muted yellow grapefruit colors, that reach to a big bright white controlled bleach head. Sudsy and foamy, with a creamy top, standing three fingers tall. Very good staying power with some ring lacing, quite a bit of cling, and even a big of chunky soapy bits.

Hop forward aroma pleasant and airy. Tropical hop notes of pineapple with some nice touches of icing sugar sweetness. Hints of spicy herbs as well, with a bit of oily bitterness hitting nicely. Slight hints of dill and pine as well make for a nice combination as well, but definitely fruit forward hop aromatics and nicely done.

Palate is quite playful if a tad jarring. Tropical notes of mango and pineapple wash nicely, through a good dense malt bill. Lots of astringency and sharp dry pine character, but without the tannic qualities making for a very nice experience. Very nice bitter finish, thick, but stays away from syrupy or overly caramel sweetness tones. Tropical aromatics seem way more pronounced and delicious after first sip, there's even a bit of peppery flavor and kick in this which is a nice addition.

Very nicely done Imperial here, I like the spicy pepper character which takes the beer into a different angle and away from the giant fruit bombs of late too.

Good afternoon NBS, Thanks Maria for the kickoff and the focus. I always enjoy the detail and fun you bring to the reviews. Home brew day today with an all grain Maibock chilling as I type.
Todays offering is from Harpoon, a hoppier version of the Irish Red, I quite like the mash up of the two. The style is a bit confounding but the end result is a maltier red IPA if you ask me. That said I appreciate the offering and Harpoon's willingness to push boudaries.
    Time to pitch some yeast.
    Cheers all

Poured from a recently purchased growler into a pilsner glass.
A - Deep copper, iron oxide, mahogany color. Excellent clarity. Active carbonation culminates in a frothy off white cap.
S - Lite touch of roast malts, sweet brown sugar, conifer like spruce match up with a touch of caramel.
T - Surprisingly bitter, in a good way, reminiscent of a mash up Leviathan IPA and Irish Red. each bringing it's strength to the offering. Sweet malts can hold of the hop bitterness and sets a fine contrast to it.
M - Medium in body, excellent carbonation keeps things hustling, a quick to exit bitterness is followed by a very balanced lingering of lightly roasted malt and light brown sugar, and spruce tip. I quite enjoy this element of the offering.
O - A hopped up Irish Red, in some ways reminds me of Centennial hops? Well executed, Harpoon deserves some love for this one.
    Cheers

Good afternoon NBSers missed last Sunday due to traveling out of town and now that the daily chores are done it is time to relax with a new beer.

This afternoon I am getting started with Yellow Belly Sundae from Buxton Brewery. It isa BBA Imperial Stout clocking in at 12% ABV. I picked this one up around Christmas at a bottle shop I had not been to before. I noticed it as I was looking around and although the price was higher than I like to pay for a single ($15.50 for a 11.2 oz.) based on what other customers had told the guy at the shop I gave it a shot. I have to say I am not disappointed, if you like peanut butter and chocolate and bourbon this is really good.

Appearance 4.25 - Pours thin black like used motor oil , thin mocha colored head that quickly dissipates spotty lacing around the glass.

Aroma 4.5 - This thing smells like dessert, I could smell the peanut butter and chocolate cookie smell while I was pouring it. I am also picking up some toffee and caramel, it is like a liquid candy bar in a good way. I am just picking up a hint of the bourbon.

Taste 4.5 - The taste is very similar to the aroma except the bourbon is more pronounced. There is plenty of chocolate chip cookie and toffee, there is also tons of peanut butter and bourbon they are both the stars of the flavor profile.

Feel 4.25- It seemed to pour sort of thin but it really coats the mouth very well, there is some burn from the alcohol

Overall 4.37 - I was a bit worried if I would like this especially at the cost but wow this thing is great. The flavors are very balanced and each one stands out very well and the aroma is heaven.

Okay so I'm on my second pour from the bomber of Frootwood .
Not much has changed since my first post except that some of the flavors are a little more noticeable in the bottom half of the bomber .
Definitely not a brew for everyone, but it is light and flavorful.
I paid $11.49 a bomber and for basically the same price I could get Liefmans Cuvée Brut and many other delightful bombers .
I'm not sure I would grab this again, but we will see how the cellared one tastes after some age on it .

In case anyone is wondering how much I'm enjoying the Villanova game, well I've already broken a few things about the house and my blood pressure is up 20 points :angry::angry:

    CHEERS !!

    Good afternoon NBS,
Here today with a classic but new to me beer from those great folks out in Kansas City, MO.
    Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad

    4.25/5 rDev +0.7%
    look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4.5

.750ml Bottle, with a BB Date of 9/2017, sitting in the cellar since last April
Poured into a Libbey Tulip Glass
L- deep red, almost brown with quickly dissipating head
S- strong notes of the candi sugar, raisins amidst complex dark fruit, slight booziness and cherry notes
T- sweet malty character enhanced by the dark fruit, followed by a mellow blend of the cherries and bourbon, with a slightly spicy finish, and vanilla on the aftertaste
F- highly carbonated, medium-bodied, with a slight syrupy feel
O- this is a special beer, where the natural sweetness of the Quad is really balanced out by the barrel and the cherries.
    Another great job by Boulevard.
    Cheers to the new week!!
