On to my 2nd and final New Beer of the Day. This is the first time i am drinking this style, and it is something totally unexpected, but in a wonderful way.
The style is Weizenbock. And the beer is Weihenstephaner Vitus.
As my first beer today, this one was sitting in the cellar, and actually turned out quite well, unlike the first beer I drank today. Without further ado, on to the Beer.

16.9oz bottle into Perfect Pint glass
5046 date code which i think is about a year old, have been storing since July 2016
L- pale gold, with huge fluffy white head, slowly receding into the glass
S- plenty of banana , green apple, bubble gum
T- starts off tart with green apple and pear, comtinues with bubblegum, and finishes with the banana clovi-ness similar to the Hefe
F- not as smooth as the Hefe, pretty decently carbonated, ever so slight alcohol kiss
Overall this a quite a complex brew, with layered tastes and contrasts, sweet and tart, smooth and rough, definitely happy to have drank this one

    Cheers!

Boulevard needs to bring a lot back.... Their Imperial Stout X Coffee Ale from February 2015 was one of my favorites of all time. It is one of the beers that got me into craft. What really sold it was they used locally roasted coffee from The Roasterie ~200 meters from where it went into the beer. A wonderful rendition of coffee and beer both made in Kansas City.

    Evil Twin Michigan Maple Jesus

Happy Super Bowl Sunday, BAs. Particularly great kickoff posts by @cavedave, @utopiajane and @JackHorzempa today.

Was happy to finally find this one on the shelf. Maple Jesus pours oily black with a half-finger of mocha-colored head that's quick to dissipate, leaving a lasting crown.

There's a big bourbon aroma with cherry and vanilla notes. Some roasted malts behind.

It's even bigger tasting with strong maple and bourbon sweetness throughout that's only partially cut by brownie batter and powdery baking chocolate bitterness. There's also a kiss of vanilla and alcohol burn on the backend.

Thick bodied, creamy mouthfeel with strong carbonation.

No subtlety at all in this one. Big, big dessert-like flavors. Very good, but even a 12-ounce bottle seemed appropriate for sharing.

Happy super bowl sunday nbs players. A pretty sunny but bitter cold winter day here on the island. Despite the mild winter we've had so far I'm really looking forward to the spring and warmer weather. Got into it a bit heavy yesterday/last night so despite the big game I'm taking it pretty easy with the drinking.

My new beer today is Dexterity Issues, a double ipa, from Moutache brewing. The beer was brewed to help raise money and awareness for the disease multiple sclerosis which the owner/brewer has been diagnosed with. The beer checks in at 8.4% abv, a hop profile of denali and simcoe, and a canning date of 2/2.

A clean pour with an amber/orange color. Moderate carbonation and major clarity. On the nose I get hops, and citrus fruit. Tangy and nicely hop forward on the first few sips. A nice smooth flow with a slightly biter bite on the finish. Big time citrus fruit notes really dominates the flavor with grapefruit, orange, lemon, and mango. The mouth feel is moderate and the abv is not noticed.

Overall, a nice and very tasty iipa. I'm in the low 4's all around.

I guess this didn't post. I picked up a limited release from a local Kansas City brewery. Even though I tried their "Hang 'Em High" rotating IPA a few iterations ago, I wasn't too impressed. That, and the fact that they don't bottle much has left me with a so-so impression of them. When I got the opportunity to buy their Double IPA from their Limited Series, I figured I shouldn't pass it up. After all, this may be my one chance. Let's dig into a Kansas City DIPA.

    Torn Label's Gustucide.

Pours a blazing copper orange, with a tinge of haze and frost to it. Head foams up with confidence, and peaks at three fingers after a pour that began aggressive and finished moderately-aggressive. Head formation is white, with tightly laced bubbles and good retention. Lacing is one-dimensional, but encompasses the entire glass. Aroma is teeming with hop notes. Specific notes include: citrus, sugarcane, and biscuit malts. Very lively, and sweet. Flavor profile dunks the palate in hops, with notes of citrus, mango, biscuit and bread malts, and a little sugarcane. Mouth feel is filling, with some fizziniess and graininess. Thickness is notched at medium-thick, with a filling feel. Overall, a DIPA that has a lot to offer. It leans towards the sweeter side of the spectrum, perhaps to cover up some hop bitterness, but offers an otherwise smooth and tasty beer. Not too much going on here, but it does have some solid things going for it.

    Score: 4.5 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 3.75 | 4 | BA Score: 4.17 | rDev: +2.0%

I love NPR's Tiny Desk series. I was listening to this as I typed this up.

Also, this is my 500th review on Beer Advocate. Glad I could spend it talking about Kansas City beer. Cheers.

New Beer Sunday: A Gluten Reduced American Pale Ale

Evenin' NBSers, with special salutations again to those who have friends with Gluten intolerance.

Well this evening's pre-game new beer is the Glutiny Pale Ale from New Belgium.

As usual my review, subject to revision until I finish the beer, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/192254/?ba=drtth#review

As with the Golden Ale I reviewed earlier, overall this beer is just fine. The delicate flavors and aromas include some pine and grapefruit zest, some noticeable malt and a bit of spicy hop bitterness. While I’m not going to run right out and buy another I’d not turn it down if offered. But I'll pass on buying this one in the future only because here are plenty of locally brewed APAs with a bit more intensity of aromas/flavors that I’m perfectly happy with having. However, with this beer, as well as with the Golden Ale, I’d feel quite comfortable recommending the beer to someone with Gluten intolerance who can have a Gluten reduced beer.

Regardless of which team you favor, enjoy the upcoming game.

    Cheers, all!

    Happy New Rye Beer Sunday!

Last 2 days we've been in the upper 50s in GJ, at the trailhead today it was 52. Did a nice little hike, sunny, lots of mud, melting snow, ice. Having a very tasty brew, definitely does not disappoint. Always nice to enjoy a brew from Boulevard.

Good early evening, NBS. Quite a weekend here. The first ever Grampa/Grandson Saturday was survived by both parties involved. Amazing to watch the little one develop in kind of weekend update fashion. Starting to respond, smile, mimic. And mumbling little sounds...made sure he agreed to not tell Nana about the casino and brewpub stops...I think Nanas understand gibberish.

Today, moved big stuff for my daughter who is a new homeowner. Once again reminded that I am not thirty, but thank the lord for my son who did the real heavy lifting and I really don't know how. And he just turned thirty...time flies...

Anyway, watched the very end of the Celtics game and witnessed a very classy act by both teams for Paul Pierce. Waiting for the football game, but I have to say I am so sick of hearing about it that I am not really excited.

So in the glass is a rather pedestrian wheat beer.

Nice color, decent head, smells OK. A little grassy, a faint whiff of spice. Lively carbonation on the sip, a little sweet, a little coriander, grassy, fresh enough. But it just lacks...something...it doesnt seem as alive as it should be. Stumbling for descriptors, but it is just a non-descript beer. There is nothing wrong with it, but it just lacks what I have enjoyed in other examples of the style. So it is an OK beer that will come in around 3.3 - 3.5 for me.

Hoping to have something else later on...welcome back to @cavedave and props to the first time posters - welcome aboard.

I just finished giving the kids baths and now I'm feeding them dinner. The game is on the DVR, so no one tell me what happens ... on the commercials.

A new beer from a local brewery I never would have bought, but a friend gave me one. Not bad at all. I'm please try surprised.

Pours dark brown with a thin, quickly dissipating one-finger head. The smell is sweet caramel and milk chocolate stout. The taste is very sweet. There is some roasted malts, milk chocolate, and caramel. The mouthfeel is thin and heavily carbonated. I'm nicely surprised by this beer. Nice flavor, easy drinking, and sweet.

Low 30s outside and it's snowing...again. Since Friday morning, there's been between 10-12" of snow dumped on Spokane. Had to leave my car in a lot under the freeway as I couldn't get into my building's parking lot yesterday.

Next new beer is an IPA from sparsely populated eastern Oregon.

Pretty sure this is quite old. It's drinkable, but the hops have clearly faded, bigly.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday, NBSers. Before diving into a pile of chips & salsa and wings, I'm gonna crack open a couple of new beers from Alaskan Brewing Company. First up, a grapefruit IPA (YIPPEE!!!) .....

When Mrs. O and I took a cruise to the Inner Passage of Alaska last May, one of the ports we stopped at was Juneau, home to Alaskan. I tried about 16 different ways to work a trip to the brewery into our excursion into Juneau, but the timing didn't work out - but I did secure a bomber of their iconic smoked porter, the best beer I enjoyed on the trip. They've been around for 30+ years, and I've always like their stuff, so when I saw this at my local, I snatched up a couple of bombers.

The pour reveals a golden-hued amber beer with a finger+ of very slightly off-white head. The aromas, primarily citrus from the Citra/Cascade/Centennial hop combo combined with the grapefruit addition, is surprisingly muted, but the taste is not - loads of citrus flavors, with grapefruit leading the flavor parade.

Significantly more astringent than other grapefruit IPA's I've tried, the rye malt addition elevates this a couple of notches, giving it a sharper bite than I usually associate with an IPA with fruit additions. I'm glad I purchased a 2nd bomber of this, because I really like it.

    Rated 4.11.

    Welcome back @cavedave!

So my wife, who isn't a beer drinker but kindly plays the role of designated driver so long as she gets to try some new food. Seeing as how a number of breweries in VA have some form of food, either brewpub style or food trucks, it works out well. Yesterday we were in Richmond for the Ruse release and I got the chance to visit Triple Crossing.

Triple Crossing has been called an under-the-radar brewery. Somehow I don't think that label will last very long. I tried three brews from them, all solid and two excellent. So yeah, technically I first tried Green Dreams yesterday, but that was on tap, this is from the can. Close enough

So the review, and I apologize that it's not as eloquent as many others.

Look is hazy, orange almost golden color with a thin white head, maybe a finger thick. Smells dank with a hint of orange. Taste is highly tropical fruits, guava, mango, passion fruit, and oranges. Some nice pine bitterness throughout the brew. Clears cleanly from the palette.

I had ZERO expectations and figured I may end up pouring out the last half. But this beer fits the bill for a lower ABV milk stout. Decent sweetness without being cloying and a nice roasted malt flavor. I probably won't buy it again, but I wouldn't turn it down if it was offered.

Good evening all and welcome new posters. Thanks @cavedave for historical kickoff. Looks like I need to do some studying. Gonna get into this quick since the game is starting. Not one to love the fruity beers too much but one I liked was Stones Tangerine EB unfiltered. At under 6 bucks a bottle I thought I'd give:
Stone Tangerine Express IPA - see back label- interesting.
Pours a deep Golden clear color with a nice looking off white head that settles to a thin cap with nice spotty lacing.
Yep tangerine/citrus with a hint of grassy hops. Just a hint of malts
You guessed it lots of tangerine with loads of bitterness as from the rind of the fruit. Coats the tongue. At first I was pineapple?
But as the the beer warms I get the deeper flavor of that fruit.
Feel is medium/light body for a 6.7% IPA.
Carb is medium. Flavor comes and goes without alot of fanfare. An easy drinker.
A very simple IPA without alot of complexities which is fine. But for Stone to me not one of their better beers. Nothing really stood out for me to just craving another sip. Not bad by any means but not something I'm going after again. Kind of a lawnmower summer IPA. Which they do state on the label. Worth a try for the price.
Thanks for all your great posts, have a great week and thanks for taking the time to listen.[IMG] [IMG]

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @cavedave for getting us started off this morning. Been pretty busy at work, but still cranking out the new reviews. I got a nice haul yesterday afternoon, so still plenty more stuff to check out soon. Did more cleaning and laundry today like usual for Sundays. Not sure if I am going to watch the game tonight; I usually only care about the commercials, but they will be on YouTube tomorrow haha.

    Reviews:

Very good German Pils. Nice head retention and lacing down the glass. Aromas and flavors of lemon, cracker, white bread, herbal, grass, and peppery hops. A bit of yeasty/fruity notes in the aromas, none in the flavors. Good sized herbal/peppery bitterness on the finish. Light-medium bodied; balanced grainy malts and hop stickiness in the mouthfeel; bit of resins with increasing dryness. A little lingering hop astringency. Crisp and refreshing. Nicely clean flavor. This was on the high end of the bitter spectrum for the style, but really well made. Not overwhelming at all. Very enjoyable. Kind of reminded me of Prima Pils with the bitter/dryness level. 3.78
    [IMG]

This was a great milk stout all around. Aromas and flavors of big milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, and cream; with some light herbal/peppery hops. Slight smoke. Light herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; great bready creaminess in the mouthfeel; light hop stickiness and chalky roast. Lightly drying. Very flavorful and drinkable; nearly refreshing. Nice body and mouthfeel for the low ABV. Really spot on for the style. Tastes like English malts to me. Delicious! 4
    [IMG]

The only Blaugies beer I haven't had, found it this weekend. Hill Farmstead collab. This is an awesome saison! Aromas and flavors of big lemon, pear, apple, white grape, citrus peel/zest, peppercorn, herbs, grass, and musty hay/straw funk; with some light-moderate wheat, cracker, light honeyed malts; with yeasty earthiness. Big peppery/spicy yeast finish. High carbonation and medium bodied. Extremely crisp, clean, and dry finishing. Some grainy malt and sticky hop/yeast notes linger in the aftertaste. Highly refreshing and complex. I love whatever strain Blaugies has as a house yeast. I've reviewed all of their beers 90-95+(though it was 4-5 years ago at this point). 4.15

Cheers, be back a bit later NBS
