Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.

Poured into a Trillium glass a pretty nice light brownish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/quick/creamy one-finger off-white head, with some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, hoppy, with a very nice citrusy, dark fruit complex (raisins, grapes, dates, figs, cherries, plums), whiskey/oak. The taste is very nice malty, hoppy, citrusy, with a very nice dark fruit complex (raisins, grapes, dates, figs, cherries, plums), whiskey/oak. Full body, ABV hidden very nicely, with a very nice dry finish, a very nice complex sipper. Overall, this is a very tasty brew.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle marked best by 9-20-26 into a snifter at 56.4 degrees F.

Appearance- Brown, opaque, light brown creamy head, above average head retention and lacing.

Aroma- Whiskey, vanilla, oak, raisin, peppery, caramel, between medium and high strength of scent.

Flavor- Raisin, vanilla, oak, whiskey, caramel, highly sweet, moderately spicy, medium strength of flavor.

Mouthfeel- Between thin and medium body, average carbonation, moderately creamy, moderately mouth warming, moderately spicy, low bitterness, high sweetness, mildly mouth coating, moderately dry finish.

Overall- Brown and opaque with above average head retention and lacing. The bouquet was a nice mix of whiskey, vanilla, oak, raisin, pepper and caramel at a medium-high strength. The flavor followed the nose but had less intensity and seemed muddled or muted. The flavors were good, they just didn't seem to have optimal balance. The mouthfeel consisted of some nice attributes like; moderate creaminess and spiciness but were hindered by some others. The body was too thin, the finish too dry, too little mouth coating property and the sweetness was too high, more booziness may have helped to balance this. Overall, this beer had a wonderful appearance, and the aromatics were very good. The flavor was good but couldn't live up to the nose. The mouthfeel wasn't bad but definitely had flaws. I did enjoy this beer at its price point and the raisin character along with the earthiness from the rye gave it similarities to an English Barleywine.

This brew may be the answer to a request nobody wanted - a great $5 beer. This huge brew goes through all kinds of gyrations before it gets here and still, it is popularly priced. I always love the Boulevard bottles. My son has lived for the last 14 years on a semi decommissioned boulevard that became un-trafficked some time after 1920, so the name rings home.

This opens reed reddish brown with little head. The aroma is serious brew. The first taste is a shock as the syrupy, alcoholic goo oozes down your throat. With whiskey I would think of adding water but this suddenly went down fine and nearly disappeared. It's a sweet and boozy drink that will appeal to any lover of big brews, but even they may be taken aback by this monster. The aftertaste is nuanced at first but becomes mired in its' strength pretty quickly.

Recommended. I always recommend this line in the fancy bottles from Boulevard - blind faith - they do a great job and are not expensive. They age well but my aging area is full so this had to be consumed! This one won't let you down.

Appearance: Pours a relatively clear, deep reddish-amber hue with a medium-sized, off-white head.

Smell: Sweetish, rather spicy aromatics of toasted crusty rye loaf slathered in oozing toffee and caramel. Some fruitiness noted. Charred flecks from still wet barrels, vanilla.

Taste: Sweet toffee, caramel, toasted maltiness buffeted by a big (spicy) booziness. Strong spicy presence throughout with bright, tangy little pops of cherry, pomegranate fruitiness mingled with charred oak notes, light vanilla and dried herb. A boozy, oh-so spicy, warming finish cushioned somewhat by the malty sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-light carbonation. Some heft and silkiness to the mouthfeel.

Overall: A sweet, spicy, strong sipper for Valentine's Day.

From a 12oz bottle 06APR2028 into a glass.

Pours a very murky dark brownish yellow with about one finger of tan head. Ok retention and lacing.

Getting some sweet boozy barrel notes on the nose. Some caramel.

Barrel forward balanced nicely by some rye spiciness. Sweet caramel. Noticeable alcohol but not off-putting.

Mildly sticky, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Boozy aftertaste.

I haven't had many barrel aged beers besides stouts. This is pretty good stuff.

A: slight haze; bronze colored; a 1 finger finely pored tan head that receded to a thin collar; OK lacing;

S: alcohol is noticeable, as well as plum with sweet malt and rye spice;

T: sweet to the middle, then spicy through the aftertaste; some oak and vanilla present also; mild bitterness at the end that is balanced by sweetness;

M: medium to full bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish; alcohol is really smooth - warming, but not hot at all;

O: dangerously smooth;

L - Pours a hazy dark brown color with a slight tan head.
S - Smells of whiskey and dried fruits.
T - Tastes of whiskey, oak and brown sugar.
F - Full bodied with minimal carbonation.

Poured from a 330mL bottle into a tulip. Very sweet; predominantly oak and brown sugar. A bit on the boozy and syrupy side, but does a good job of not being cloying about it. A tasty, indulgent dessert of a beer.

I'm a fan of earthy, 'dirty', Rye beers and this is the best I've ever had. Of course it helps immensely that it's barrel-aged. Mouthfeel is appropriately 'thick'.
