The expresso did really linger. We've been very lucky to have some awesome coffee stouts lately and it may or may not have had an effect on my ratings lately. I did enjoy it and am glad you did as well. Cheers!

I liked that one too. Recently enjoyed one courtesy of @Prager62 . Nice to see another Hoosier brewery widening their footprint.

Moderate pour yields a one inch white head over a slightly hazy golden body with some lacing. Nose of slight funk, citrus, and (I'm guessing here) yarrow and oats? Taste of citrus (lemon/lime) and very nice feel with a crisp, dry finish that is so nice and refreshing. Overall another fine offering from Greensboro Bend, VT. Cheers!

Clown shoes, the barista. A breakfast brown ale with oatmeal, milk sugar and espresso. It reminds me of unibroue trois pistoles which is an excellent beer. Deep dark mohagony color and a sting aroma of alcohol, dried fruit, and perhaps the milk sugar. Medium carbonation and feel, definitely not thick feeling though. Very good beer but I'm not getting the espresso too much. A little bbqit like a caramel candy taste with just a hint of coffee. Again a very good beer but it's missing that espresso blast I was expecting[IMG]

New Beer Sunday: Yet Another IPA

Evenin’ NBSers with special greetings to those willing to sample beers from the High End breweries and also a special call out for @nc41 whose comments about this beer in another thread led to my picking up a can of this evening’s new beer. Finally best wishes and good luck to those in Texas who are coping with all the rain. Hopefully all we know from on this site will survive and not be too badly impacted by Harvey.

Well the weather for our family outing was as nice as one could ask for. Today we made a visit to a few small towns between Lancaster area of PA and here. That is Amish country here in PA. Our goal was to do a bit of sightseeing of mostly familiar places, a bit of shopping (for fresh baked goods and some other Pennsylvania Dutch specialty foods) as well as to have a leisurely late lunch at a favorite family restaurant in the small PA town of Bird-in-Hand. The Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant focuses it’s menu on Pennsylvania Dutch home cooking and we always enjoy their food.

This evening’s new beer is the Lieutenant Dank IPA from Wicked Weed. This one was also canned in late Jun so freshness should be fine.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until I finish the beer, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30581/201237/?ba=drtth#review

While the name features Dank, the aromas/flavors are much more complex than just that, and the dankness is actually almost incidental. There’s lots of fruity character. There are also some hints of herbal and spicy character in the background. There’s a nice bitterness that is slightly softened by the malt backbone, which is way in the background. The dankness here is definitely a minor player in that it is noticeable but doesn’t dominate anything.

This evening’s Original Cast recording of an American Musical is Kismet, from Kismet with Richard Kiley and Doretta Morrow,

    Stranger in Paradise

    Cheers, all!

They seem to get consistently better with each release in my opinion. Some of the downstate folks tend to disagree. I have access to many of the best in this style the tri state area has to offer, but what do I know? I'll keep rolling the dice until my tastebuds prove me wrong!

This is the bourbon barrel cousin of the whiskey barrel version I reviewed in May 2017. Pour is the same jet black pour with the same tan head and just a smidge of light leaking at the edges.

Aromas are dark chocolate, the barrel, and stone fruit. A little thin, but more than covered in the taste - the chocolate is bigger, the barrel is more pronounced, and the stone fruit has a bite.

I loved the first one of these I had, and I love this iteration, too.

I think this beer is far better than the BA Score, I think IPAs take a hit if it's not a Citra bomb.

L- Nice magenta color with not a lot of head.

S- The brett smell come through first with a light, but not overpowering berry smell.

T- Definitely can taste the tart, and the cranberry more than the grape. Fruit taste lingers.

M- Dry feeling, nothing really stands out on the mouthfeel.

O- The fruit really adds to the beer. I think it'd just be an average farmhouse if not for the nice balance of the cranberry, which is what I get most on the taste.

This afternoon I perused the BA site reading reviews, looking for a new beer to try, and in particular I was looking for something along the lines of Weihenstephaner Vitus, which is one of my very favorite beers. That led to me to Schneider Weisse Tap 6 Unser Aventinus, which I suppose people just refer to as "Aventinus." It has an overall BA rating of 96 and glowing reviews from the Alstrom Bros., one of which begins "A gift from the gods...." Well that was enough to get my attention so I resolved to pick up a bottle today if I could. I had no idea if this was a readily-available beer or a rarely-seen whale.

As it turned out I found it in stock at a bottle shop a quarter mile from my house. Slightly more expensive than Vitus but not out of this world. German beers are generally a great value. After some refrigeration this afternoon I popped it open this evening.

Color: reddish amber. Much darker and more red than Vitus.

Nose: Banana, clove, definitely has a very Vitus-y sort of aroma.

Flavor: First sip lots of that banana-clove ester taste, with a touch of band-aid medicinal taste that rapidly becomes less prominent with subsequent sips. As I work my way down the glass, the thought that keeps coming to mind is that the complex flavor profile, which I lack the vocabulary to really describe, strikes me as sort of a marriage between two of my favorite beers: Vitus and Rochefort Trappistes 10. I haven't done a side by side comparison but it seems to have some of that Belgian candi sugar flavor going on like a Belgian trappist ale such as Rochefort Trappistes or Chimay Blue.

Needless to say I am really loving this beer and I look forward to enjoying some more in the days to come.

Very late to the party today, as always a great thread, a must read even if I don't have a new beer.

Rummaging around and I stumble onto a St Arnold Divine 17 Reserve I forgot about. New to me. So a big Baltic Porter at over 9% Abv, Perle hops, Using Munich Malt, and some chocolate malt, Lager yeast. Very smooth, not sure of the age, but the alcohol is negligent..... Until tomorrow morning I suppose. Rich, but medium viscosity, the hops nicely cut the malt, so it's not sweet at all. Finish is tough it's a tie between dark chocolate and the touch of hops. But it's a smooth long finish, and a style I don't usually partake, but an extremely easy sipper without the over the top SIZE of taking on a big stout.

Sadly, there are many beers rated better than Weihenstephaner. Surly's, while a very enjoyable, and different take on it, is #2 and that is a joke. I am not one of those who thinks that an American brewery can't make a world class, traditional Oktoberfest (see Sierra Nevada), but I can't comprehend how these hundred(s) of year old German examples don't get recognition. I mean Ayinger (at 6), Hacker, Paulaner... are all under 4 for the ratings. Look at the top rated IPA list and tell me how far you have to go down the list to find a beer under 4. Yet the people who invented the Marzen aren't capable of producing a "world class" version??

Sorry. Putting my soap box away now

    Nice choice of glass!!

Surprised to see I've not rated this beer yet, though I do believe not being too much of a fan. Next time we stop by the brewery, I'll be sure to grab a pour to confirm or dispute my memory and write a review so I don't "forget" again.

Haha - I looked to see how I rated this, and apparently I've reviewed it three times :astonished:

My reviews are proclaimed as being on 8-yearr, 3-4yr, and 1yr. None of my reviews are negative, so apparently I feel you can age this beer with no fear.

    Homer voice, drooling: mmmmm Ayinger!

Just picked up 2 four packs for the actual month of the celebration - though it, too, was likely bottled about a month ago :slight_frown:

(sorry for borrowing your soap box).

Alright, so because I know right now I won't be able to participate in this stellar thread next Sunday, I'm going to post my second beer today here. I'll be visiting my parents, so c'yall in 2 weeks. I'll be back.

Thanks to a good dude in Maine, I present this fantastic beer:

    Can dated 08/7/17.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a nice looking murky to hazy burnt orange color with a sustaining finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Lace tried to stick but slid for the most part.
The aroma had some orange to mango sweetness with a danky sweet onion then a light lime and some smooth grassy sweet hops accompanying a smooth cracker malt bill.
The flavor was moderately sweet with a substantial juiciness running about, still, it pulled in a nice balancing maltiness that shaped the final overall taste very nicely. Light danky onion. Mild tropical sweet aftertaste with a little bit of danky sweet onion.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it - enough body to show me the right kind of weight for a DIPA. Carbonation felt appropriate. ABV felt on par. Slight bitter to juicy sweet sort of finish.
Overall, pretty damn nice DIPA well worthy of having again.

Uinta ready set gose.orange gold color,a bit of a watery feel. Aroma and taste are similar,a bit sour and tart. The salt and coriander didnt come through very strong and mostly it was just tart and sour. Maybe my hopes were too high but there wasn't too much ti catch my attention[IMG]

FYI, it's not a good idea to compare the numerical scores for one style to the numerical scores from another style. There are too many biases built into the rating process for that to be meaningful without some statistical adjustments that are not made on this site. So you want to only compare beers within a style. A 4 on a RIS doesn't mean the same thing as a 4 on an Oktoberfest.

Similarly, given the way the rank ordering system within a style works you don't want to assume that a beer ranked 6 is "better" than the beer ranked 4. Those rankings are determined by relatively small differences that may not actually be meaningful differences. It's quite possible for there to be an equivalence class with several beers in it where the only thing that really distinguishes them from each other is personal preferences rather than quality.
