There were recent threads on this site that offered some questions about our drinking and reviewing habits. One had a Beer Advocate opining about the types of beers we drink today, with some points about what beers we don't drink today. Another posed questions about how to handle re-reviews on this site.

Seeing as New Beer Sunday has a mission statement of trying new beers and highly encourages writing reviews of said beers, I thought these topics interesting.

It likely comes to no one's surprise that we generally like IPAs on this site, that and imperial stouts. The fact that we might be shifting our focus toward so called NE IPAs (perhaps DDH hopped) and "pastry" stouts could be borne out in the history of this ongoing thread. Similarly, the fact that we no longer seem to drink certain other styles of beer (for example: brown ales; and who here has ticked an English mild?) could also likely been derived from this weekly thread.

NBS isn't here to tell you what to drink, but this host does wonder if there will come a time when having a brown ale or a dry, hoppy roasty stout or a malty yet highly bitter ESB will become a novelty in this thread. If we run across one, will we have forgotten we had the beer and find an old review for the beer we have in our hand? Will we change the rating and/or review we found based on new information or let it stand as a testament to a bygone age?

Though I encourage everyone's input in the appropriate threads on the last question, we don't really worry about these topics directly in this thread. This thread is purposed to focus on your initial impressions of a beer - whatever the style you happen to have chosen to purchase this week. Pop that new beer open and tell us about it: what are you seeing, smelling and tasting? Try your best to describe how it feels on your your palate and how it presents itself to you overall. Take a second to think long term and indicate if there is a possibility that there will come a time where you will have to consider a re-review or will this beer in your hands likely be the last of its kind to grace your lips?

What is asked of you in this thread is to put together something for us following the above guidelines and have it on our desk by the stroke of midnight, your time. Please take some time to notify the beer's home page (CC your thoughts there, if nothing else). You don't have to accept this job, but we hope you do and we expect you to contribute to our team immediately. If you agree to our terms, welcome aboard! Let's get started...

Hiya everyone and thank you Craig @cjgiant for getting us up this morning. I personally am a big fan of threads for learning tasting and talking about tasting. And I am becoming a big fan of the style now that it has gained more widely distributed examples.

    Happy New NEIPA Sunday

They are using pilsner malt and vic secret hops.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

This is a rotating hops beer and also a single malt single hop beer. SMASH for short. Pours like orange juice with a soft milky orange body and creamy peppered prickly foam that sits and grabs the glass as it falls. Perfumey sweaty hops with orange lemon and dank weeds and floral pepper. Sweet candy with a fuller cracker malt and dry lemony hops. Straw and not too much earth or sweet spice. Dank and dry. Juicy floral. Juicy in hops is the floral. The vic secret have an icy cool quality that is also grassy. Tropical berry in back. You could say it's a new sensation. Finishes with softer bubbles and a bit sharper bitterness. Orange juice and pine. @LambicPentameter said it best in a thread "They also "produce fruit juice flavors" by adding fruit, rather than emphasizing the natural fruit-impression flavors that are common in many varieties of hops. I would (and I suspect many brewers of NEIPA) would object to the notion that underattenuation is a core characteristic of the style. Again, the proper representation of the style isn't actually supposed to be sweet, although the lower bitterness and creamy mouthfeel can give that impression." As much as this beer reminds you of orange juice it's more piney than orange.

    Cheers everyone!

Good morning all. For me this is a place to introduce beers that are new to me and I don't really give any thought as to style because I'll buy anything that looks interesting . . .

Lightly hazy deep gold color with good cap and lacing.

Aroma of clean, zesty citrus hops with a somewhat mild yet strongly present malt base. A touch of yeastiness gives the malt away.

Taste is surprisingly mild yet exceedingly rich. Hops forward, of course, yet malt establishes a presence that it maintains throughout. There is an overriding hop presence that reminds me of grapefruit yet it's the fruit itself, not the zest or essential oils. Hops and malt are well blended to a whole that only gives up a bit of bitterness in the finish. Not a single thing out of place here.

Full creamy texture with balancing carbonation.

This is an inspired brew that drinks very well. Not a food matching or casual company brew, rather one to be savored on it's own.

Happy Water You Drinking for New Beer Sunday (Week 705)?!?

Ah, the merry punster is with you on this fine Sunday, as you will soon realize.

Before that, I must request clarification or retraction. If we are to be finished with NBS by Midnight (Local), then shouldn't the thread be open at the stroke of Midnight (Local)? Otherwise, 7.5 hours have already been shaved off of my day. What about opening the thread at Midnight (Zulu)? Or perhaps, allow users to continue to submit until the thread is closed by a mod, as it always is? I am a team member, but I might have odd hours, errands or other things that my call me away prior to Midnight (Local), but still during open times. I don't want to be CANned if I CAN help it!:cold_sweat:

Onward! My first bottle of the day is:

Happy NBS to all. First off, my apologies for a recycled picture as my cell phone is in the bedroom with my sleeping wife. I think she would kill me if I woke her up to take beer ****, Enjoying a Fullers London Porter, they are a brewery that I have found to be remarkably good over the years and I love the fact that singles are always available. Pours a dark brown with a thin beige head that is well retained but leaves little lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Taste follows the nose with rich roasted malts, fresh brewed coffee, dark chocolate, some caramel sweetness, nuts, dark fruits and a very mild earthy wood like quality. Medium bodied for the style, lightly carbonated, creamy mouth feel, very light bitterness on the finish. Very well done beer.

New Beer Sunday: An American Wild Ale

Mornin’ NBSers, with another alert for people with a passion for the wild and purple. Also special thanks to @cjgiant for his start today.

Today’s weather here is expected be mostly sunny with a high in the mid-80s but with enough humidity to get us up to a “feels like” near 90.

In his opening @cjgiant asks, “....and who here has ticked an English Mild?" I can not tell a lie, I have (in fact both an English Pale Mild and an English Dark Mild). Indeed, I spent this year's Super Bowl evening (which the Eagles won, in case you hadn't noticed ) with multiple bottles of a locally brewed Dark Mild. The thing is I first had Yard's Brawler years before I started posting in this thread so it wouldn't quite be cricket to include it in these threads since it is an "old friend" rather than a new acquaintance. All this leads me to wonder the degree to which our views of what is happening in the world of beer are a bit distorted by threads such as this and being participants on a site where many of us spend at least part our time in search of the "something new" for the sake of it being new.

This morning’s new beer qualifies as being an example of one of those "new things" (but for me a thing that is getting a bit old fairly quickly). The beer is called Vape Tricks and it comes from Prairie Brewing.

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30356/290302/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer include some beady wheat and malt backed up by a bit of mustiness. Early on the cherry tartness is very light and there’s a bit of sweetness. However as the breadiness and sweetness fade away the cherry and its tartness dominate the finish and it’s ending. Drinkable, enjoyable, and worth trying.

    Cheers, all!

Uggh that running pun was a shoe in to jog my memory, and I realized that when I was head maniac here it actually would have been easier sometimes to start the thread at midnight Sat., or thereabouts, than early the next day. It also was expressed to me to try to keep the traditions of the thread as much as possible, and this always was a thread that started Sunday morning. Not sure how our present hosts feel about it, but if this was a vote my vote would be no.

But isn't LNBA already a thing?

Edit- and hope to be back with a new beer later if I don't get lost in the woods.

Yer showing yer age, @cavedave ! :stuck_out_tongue: LNBA went out with high-button shoes, spats & the horse & buggy. Yes, WBAYDN has a form of LNBA, but it is not separate where NBS is its own entity. I say stay with your established traditions, but why should I have to stop contributing to NBS simply because local time has Mickey Mouse signaling a Safety? As long as the thread is open & the lights are on, why is it suddenly verboten? My time machine takes me not only across time, but also across space & who's to say that I'm not in Hawai'i at 1900 (Local)?

In the spirit of another thread running for the last couple months about likes and dislikes for a particular genre of beer, the lager, it seems that everybody does not, in fact, hate lagers.

I have many friends who are craft beer drinkers and state that they do not like lagers. Some of them even rate lagers accordingly. I’ve never asked them why, but someday I will, and I’ll add my commentary to one of the appropriate threads on this site.

In the meantime, I’ll follow the instructions set forth by our fine OP as I crack open this new lager from To Ol. I thoroughly enjoy many types of lagers. How I feel about this one can be found below.

Enjoy your Sunday and all of the new beers that you’ll be sharing with us today!

To Ol Session Raid - A 4% Hoppy Lager

    3.67/5 rDev +3.1%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

A: The beer pours with a translucent, golden straw color. A slight haze to the beer. A fluffy, bone white head that juts out atop the edge of this Pilsner Glass like a snow capped mountain peak. Tons of lacing. Minimal amount of visible carbonation.

S: Slightly skunky. Grassy. A cooked grain aroma reminiscent of the aroma that hits you when you walk into a brewery.

T: The flavor of this lager is very mild. There’s a mild crackery element. I feel like it wants to be bitter but it’s not. It’s a little grassy and slightly dry on the finish.

    M: Smooth and low carbonation.

D: I was not a big fan of this beer. I feel like it was a bit stuck in the middle of a session IPA and a pilsener. Not much of a need for this beer for me. However, I think that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be. So, there’s nothing wrong with it and I would say it is a drinkable beer if you’re looking for something low ABV with more character than an American adjunct lager and more along the lines of a pilsner.

[IMG] Flippin’ Frappe DIPA 9% ABV. Poured into a Free Will 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a mahogany with a two inch cream colored head that leaves waves of lace behind with really nice retention. 4

Smell is odd and actually nice, cocoa nibs, coffee grounds, apricot, vanilla, and some grapefruit rind, what the heck is this? 4.25

Taste follows mocha, vanilla, with some pine, apricot, and grapefruit a coffee infused DIPA is what I am thinking? 4.25

Mouthfeel is big, plenty of life, a tad dry, and at 9% ABV dangerously drinkable and hits hard. 4.5

Overal this is probably not everyone’s jam, but I really didn’t know what to expect when I poured it and saw that odd color. Once I figured out what was going on, I said this stuff is damn tasty. Well done. 4.25

I've had exactly one Dark Mild at under 4% Abv, and that 3.8% abv was packed with flavor and with a significant hop presence as well. From Bull City Brewing in Durham.

My new to me beer today is an Oude Gueuze, “Cuvee Armand & Gaston”, which is a blend of Lambics, by 3 Fonteinen, Belgium:

I’ve had a few Lambics and a few Oude Gueuze, and I’m hoping that during this current trip to more fully explore the styles...here goes:

Pours an opaque pale amber/amber gold; almost no off-white head; a few micro dots of lacing upon swirl; no ring. 4.75

Aromas of sour apricot and very old leather; strong funky barnyard lasts the whole glass; funky wild yeast exhale. 4.75

Sour fruit; wet hay; overripe pear; sour peach and grape must flavors. 5.0

Almost no carbonation; medium lite body; acidic and very dry finish. 4.75

Overall, a beautiful apricot hue; sour but not puckering; funky wet straw linger; this drinking experience was awesome; an absolutely world class beer!

Overall this did indeed remind me of the namesake, with an appearance as though you'd mashed a sandwich into the drink. Which is to say hazy and brown. The aroma was my favorite part as it matched the sandwich quite a bit. Definitely every element (bread/peanut/raspberry) there. The palate was a touch light and lost almost all of the peanut. Also a bit sweet, though given the context that's appropriate just not something I'm used to in a brown ale. Overall I thought the beer was better with the sandwich than by itself. Cheers!

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! This is my last Sunday of freedom, as tomorrow is report day for teachers at my school. Feel pretty fortunate to still be on summer break though, as almost every other teacher in the nation (@larryi86 , etc) is already back to school. I am really not looking forward to 06:00 tomorrow, but at least I have plenty of new beer to distract myself with today!

Starting with this weird number from Tired Hands.
Isn’t that true for all dry-hopping though? Perhaps I’m just a dummy. Anyway...

    Synopsis:
This is not an enjoyable beer to drink. An excellent, tropical nose, but that tropical fruit gets washed away but an artifical, soapy taste, that combined with the noticeable booziness, makes this tough to swallow. I won’t be able to finish this. Hoping @thebeers reviews this today to verify that I am indeed an insane person for tasting what I taste. :flushed:
