Well, as I continue to make my way toward the bottom, the main changes/take aways are that the finish really starts to reveal the fruit flavor as it lingers more. Definitely a blackberry taste to it. It also seems to be more barleywine than stout with the prevailing overall richness/sweetness. I wouldn’t change any of my other impressions though. Especially the bourbon barrel. Time to find out (this is the part where it’s much more interesting for me than you in real time).

Nice @2beerdogs I will say, knowing Derek I sort of cheated indirectly because I suspected it was a Bruery beer once I noticed the bourbon barrel, which meant that it was likely 12% + and I was going to be drunk before noon, but I’m glad I didn’t look through any listings because it definitely would have ruined the experience.

The main things that stand out to me is that it drinks lower than the abv, which is backwards in my experience with their beers, the color, and I still stand behind the chocolate flavor. I would like to have more information on this one. I did start to get that Wheatwine/ Barleywine aspect as it warmed, but definitely whiffed on the wheat.

Been awhile since I’ve had anything with boysenberry in it, and I actually haven’t had the fruit by itself before to my knowledge. Unfortunately. I do recall it being referenced as a blackberry-raspberry hybrid, but the “tangy flavor” noted really fits the infected aspect I noticed.

Boysenberry, a very large bramble fruit, considered to be a variety of blackberry (Rubus ursinus). Possibly a cross between a blackberry and a loganberry or red raspberry or both, the dark reddish black fruit has a sweet and tangy flavor.

Two solid tasting choices. Thanks again!

I agree with the masses in that anti vaxxers should be quarantined to their own little corner of the world, maybe one of the poles even.

I hosted the first of what I hope to be many shares yesterday and although it was somewhat disappointing in terms of attendance, there were 3 of us, there were about 10 more that will hopefully make it in the future.

This is a beer that I’ve been very excited about for quite sometime. It’s Sump coffee stout from Perennial and it’s not quite lived up to expectations, but it still exceptional. Im sure that I’ve built it up too much in my head and while it is an outstanding beer, I prefer Big bad baptist any day of the week. On to the review.

Dark roast coffee, fudge, just a little heat, and a tinge alcohol on the nose. When it warms the alcohol scent disappears completely. The taste follows exactly with a slight hint of the alcohol on the back of the pallet that continues to warm the gullet on the way down. Mouthfeel is thick, creamy, fudgy, and finishes dry exactly like coffee should. Overall it’s great, I’m around 4.35. I just feel bad that I built this up so highly in my head beforehand, but BBB set the bar very high for me.

    From a 16oz can

It looks like a raspberry- plum juice based smoothie, but it is very highly carbonated. As in audibly. It fizzed like a seltzer, producing a pinkish head that almost immediately disappeared.

Initial aroma is surprising. Lots of brownie like chocolate to me. And a marshmallow like vanilla. Starting to get roasted malts that are reminiscent of a barrel aged stout.

Definitely some bourbon barrel flavor right off the bat with some milk chocolate, and sweet marshmallow cream before it gets tart/sour with a raspberry/blackberry to red grape/plums fruit and a little bit of prickly feel.

The body is not as heavy as some of the traditional barrel aged stout flavors would normally be. I can get a little alcohol out of it though so I’m guessing it is still going to be higher than what the feel would indicate, which is more like 9%ish.

As I continue to make my way toward the bottom, the main changes/take aways are that the finish really starts to reveal the fruit flavor as it lingers more. Definitely a blackberry taste to it. That looks like the raspberry-colored version of the green beer that was posted in this mystical space a couple of months ago. If I would've poured that one, or the one you cracked today, I would've been like .....

Not to get too off topic and ruin a beer thread, but yes. Even if considering any of the possible (and rumored) side effects from vaccines, they are still better than the alternative. It’s amazing to me that people would risk their childrens well being over unsubstantiated claims. News flash (and I know a few personally, including family) even if they caused/contributed to Autism, it’s better than the alternative for your son/daughter.

And for the even crazier people, I don’t care if the government tracks my every move and purchase, or even controls me to a certain extent, versus living in an iron lung with no beer or whiskey. Soap box rant over.

    Fallow

Pours a cloudy orange color with a bigger white head, receeding to a small ring of lacing.

Smells of an unforseen fruitiness, defined by perfumy peaches, dried mint and flowery, almost earthy vanilla bean. This also features a pleasant tartness, together with a note of hops, adding mango, kiwi and dried leaves among wild honey to the aromas.

Has almost no carbonation to it and a thinner mouthfeel to it with a light spark of carbonation during the end.

Tastes of sweet and sour, perfumy peaches, which take a fruity turn, adding additional honey and a flowery vanilla quality. The beer turns just a little creamier then, with more lemon and acidity cutting through, not being able to distract from the omnipresent peaches at all. Finishes malty, lemony, perfumy and peachy, nothing new goes on in the finish, while the flavors are able to intensify a little.

This is pretty straight forward and intense, relying solely on the peaches. To me personally the peaches grow a little too perfumy with just a lower, watery mouthfeel to them, creating a relatively one-dimensional, yet tasty sour.

Good afternoon NBS a second new beer today from our friends at Honest Weight in Orange MA.
The beauty of this is in the aromatics and the texture. At 5% a real delight in the Pale Ale category.

Poured from a growler filled yesterday at the brewery into the pint glass.
A - Almost glowing hazy straw color. A loose knit cap of white resides through the experience.
S - From 3 feet away, orange, pineapple, and a bit of green onion, a bit of apricot, and lemongrass as well.
T - Follows the nose almost perfectly, less the green onion component.
M - Soft on the palate, carbonation ushers the crowd along, finish is pleasantly dry.
O - A delightful pale ale, full in texture and quite flavorful. The strength is in the aromatics for sure.

New Beer Sunday: Fruit and Field Beer

Afternoon NBSers with an alert for fans of berry beers.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Leinenkugel’s Berry Weiss.

My review, subject to revision, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/710/2967/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are mostly about the mixed berries (blackberries, elderberries and loganberries) and the sweetness. There’s also a bit of tartness but no real bitterness showing even in the finish. If you like mixed berry punch this would serve as a refreshing beverage during a BBQ or as refreshment on a warm afternoon. That said, I doubt I'd have two in a row or that I'll be having this one again.

    Cheers, all!

I see my can is different than what is pictured, my version is teal instead of yellow, as this is apparently part of a rotating hop series; to which this one contains Ekuanot and Comet hops. The can also bills this as an NEIPA but it’s more translucent, has a less aggressive head and is darker orange than the OJ looking brews we’ve come to know. The nose is terrific. Candy orange, a hint of pepper, touch of grassiness and a solid caramel malt backbone. Taste mirrors the nose for the most part but introduces a straight on grapefruit taste. Medium bodied and finishes pretty dry with a good bitter left on the tongue. Solid beer, hope to try more variants

But after that, I'm ready for another beer.

    Revival Blood Orange Bushido Ale

    From the can:

"A reenvision of our Bushido Pumpkin Ale. This brew is suited up and flavored with ginger, lemongrass, pumpkin and now blood orange. Samurai “BOB” was fermented with a blend of Lager and Sake yeast, crafting an untraditional take on a seasonal tradition that is crisp, bitter, and tastes killer."

The regular Bushido Ale impressed me, clocking in with a +rDev on a pumpkin beer. Who would have seen that coming?

Like that beer, the Blood Orange version is a very dark caramel color, very lively in the glass. The nose is similarly very inviting, favoring the caramel malt and yeast, while still allowing the spices and pumpkin to come through.

On the palate, it's a bit mixed, muddled, and confusing. Drier and spicier than I expected, and a bit sour. Not clean as in the nose. Still a decent array of flavors, but it just doesn't quite come together for me. Enjoyable, but not as much as the base Bushido Ale.

..aroma is very complex, seems new things keep popping up. Bubblegum, yeast, orange, citrus peel, dark fruit
..taste is. Multifaceted like aroma, fig, orange, sweet malt, yeast, citrus peel. Dark fruit lingers long in the aftertaste. Mildly sweet yet a bit dry as well

    Ayinger - Altbairisch Dunkel

Ayinger beers are hit or miss for me in a big way. Yeah, you read that right. Feel free to take away my drinking license if I’ve crossed a line. Regardless, I still think they’re a very good brewery.

When the Epicurious "Cheap vs Expensive Beer" with Garret Oliver video came out (link below), the part of the video on “Munich Dark Lager” made me really want to have the beer he was having. I assumed it was Ayinger’s Dunkel for lack of a better guess. Where did the producers of this video come across a fresh enough bottle of this? Better question - How can it be that I never had this beer? Ayinger’s lack of dating can scare me away.

I was really fearing the age of this one. Turns out, it’s drinking like it’s right in the middle between fresh and too old. There is some unpleasant oxidation, but not enough to ruin it. In this case, the key to enjoying it was to drink it without taking too long a pause between sips/gulps. If you keep drinking it, you push the oxidation notes to the side due to acclimation and the beer underneath comes through. Stop, and the bad comes back. It’s like the need for staying in the water when you’re in a pool that’s a little too cold.

The beer is simply gorgeous. It’s a ruby/chestnut mix depending on the light. Great head. Flavors are round and fit snugly together. Tastes of dark bread, malt, a tiny bit of smoke and licorice. Dry finish. This beer is just awesome. Liter worthy.

OK, so I just checked this beer on BeerAdvocate. It has a rating of “very good” here. Um, OK, now I’m wondering what the audience thinks is better than this. Let’s see. Turns out, this “very good” beer is also number 9 on the list of top rated Dunkels  :grimacing: (it’s number 3 if you only count beers with at least 100 ratings and number 1 if you only count beers with at least 1000 ratings).

My training and daily practice is in science. I had a relative who was lost to polio-related issues two years ago. But for the vaccine timing, he would be enjoying a Jever this afternoon. I contracted malaria while working in Malawi ( despite prophylactic meds) so I was interested in the new vaccine being implemented there.

A new beer today is The Way Life Should Be, is an IPA from Orono Brew Co ( ME). The cloudy, lemon-yellow can pour with a 1 cm fine cap, has an aroma of tangerine and guava. The flavor is citrus first, some grapefruit included and mango notes are also present. The hop bitterness is moderate. The overall balance of fruit and bitterness is great.

Happy Sunday NBS players. Another wet and grey spring day here on the island. Spending the day inside relaxing and hoping the Mets can get things going in the right direction.

My new beer, and first from this brewery, today is Midnight Oil, an oatmeal coffee stout, from Swamp Head brewing. Gots this from @Roguer and his third NBS BIF #nein box and the glass as well. The brew checks in at 5% abv and has a 3/7/19 canning date.

A black pour with lots of carbonation and a frothy off-white head. The nose is decently floral with roasted coffee and charred malts. The drinking hit with a lot of those same characters. Dry and roasted coffee grinds, a good kick of chocolate malts, and a touch of smoke with bitter hops on the finish. The mouth feel falls on the lighter side of moderate. A good dry body that does not fall watery despite its low abv.

Overall, a pretty simple and straight forward beer. Nothing crazy but a decent morning coffee beer for sure. I would score it in the mid 3’s range to slightly higher. Thanks again Andrew. I will look for more swamp head beers when I get back down to fl.
