    16 oz. can.
    Canned 03/13/19.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 7/8 inch light tan head over a translucent mahogany body with no lacing. Nose of biscuit, dark malt, and slight caramel. Taste mirrors nose pretty well with a bit of sweetness in the middle and a bit of chocolate on the finish. Very tasty, indeed; with a good feel and overall, I could definitely drink more than a few of these at a sitting. Cheers to the boys of Everett, MA for this tasty treat!

Happy Even More New Odds & Sods Beer Sunday (Week 747), Part Deux!
My apologies, but the above link to my Shipyard Hoppy Pride PILSNER review no longer exists, per se. Partway into my review, I noticed that the pic was for "Shipyard Hoppy Pride IPA" but it was only built as "Hoppy Pride", setting up a CANundrum. 8=( @dbrauneis to the rescue! He is a CANtastic moderator & made a great suggestion/solution.
    The review now exists here:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/139/422817/?ba=woodychandler#review
My apologies for any CANfusion & I will try to score another CAN for a pic (I find Crack!ed CAN pics distasteful). If somebody beats me to it, so be it.
In the interim, things did NOT grind to a halt & I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I had not previously reviewed & rated 8=O:

    Mont des Cats

This is my final tangential beer from the dubbel tasting. It’s a beer “from” the Trappist Mont des Cats abbey in northern France. I put “from” in quotes since the beer is actually brewed at Chimay. The powers that be have decided that this beer can have “Trappist” on the label but it can’t have the official Trappist seal since the beer isn’t brewed at the monastery.

As a Belgian amber, it’s a perfect transition from the last Corsendonk beer. Since this isn’t a category on BeerAdvocate, you can see some confusion in the reviews that are figuring out if it’s a dubbel or Belgian pale ale.

I figured there was a great chance that this bottle was old, but I decided to go for it anyway. Unfortunately, I figured right. I can’t really give a proper reaction to this beer, even though a brewer that doesn’t date their product arguably deserves to be rated accordingly. I had my eyes on this beer brand for years but I don't remember ever pulling the trigger. Guess I waited too long.

This is a pale bronze beer. It doesn’t have quite the same pretty glow as the Corsendonk amber. The taste is suffering from oxidation. There’s caramel, dates and paper. Sometimes you get the sense of a great beer underneath the age. That isn’t the case here, although it could have been great at one point.

One more new beer today, Tired Hands Parageusia 10. This has been a fun series of beers, 1 is still my favorite, but 10 is really good too! Had to bust out the gold leaf Parageusia glass I got at the first release.

A few new beers knocked back today, with reviews and thoughts, as I catch up and get ready for bed.

Aardwolf Black Flowers imperial stout with vanilla

I .... this was just kind of confusing. Slightly metallic on the palate, and with an artificial banana note that was quite distracting (once I brought it up to my friend, who ordered the same thing, he said it basically ruined the beer for him, since he couldn't not taste it anymore).

I often get banana in imperial stouts, and I assume it's from the yeast. This was different. Again, artificial tasting. I can only assume it's a combination of the yeast and the vanilla used.

Not a bad beer - not at all, actually. Just not something I'd likely order again.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30858/422710/?ba=Roguer#review
3.63 / 0.0% (added to the database; the ABV is different on the menu and on the board, so who knows?)

Aardwolf Double Surrender Ash black barleywine aged in Islay Scotch and bourbon barrels

Wow! This one is just .... holy crap!

The nose doesn't quite give you enough of a warning as to what you're about to get into. Sure, it's got tons of Scotch and wood, nearly overwhelming caramel grains, but it doesn't really scream "peaty smoke."

On the palate ... brace yourself. Initially, it's deep, dark, and sweet, swirling in caramel grains, toffee, and slightly sour mash. Then, the smoke hits you: all oak and smokey Islay Scotch. Big boozy notes, too. Jeez! This thing is hard to drink - not that it's bad, just that it's really, really strong and uncompromising.

If you're a fan of smoky Scotch, you'd probably freaking love this. For me, it was almost too much.

Clown Shoes Cam the Conqueror (I?)IIPA

This thing was just straight 4.0s across the board. Beautiful beer; big, smooth nose, swarming with strong malt, honey, and tropical fruit; and just as expressive and smooth on the palate.

It's interesting, for an 11% ABV IIIPA, to have minimal citrus and resin on the palate; this brew opts almost exclusively for tropical fruit, honey, and sweet, almost chewy pale malt. It maintains a moderate bitterness, eschewing both the low IBU craziness of so many modern IPAs and the massive dose of 100+ IBU bitterness of most IIIPAs.

It also manages to be smooth and lively on the palate, with absolutely no hint of the sky high ABV (definitely feels like the 8-10% range).

I already gave away the score, I suppose. Probably the most impressive beer I enjoyed all day; shame I saved it for last.

3rd new beer of the night, and this will be it. I have a couple of more beers, but they are fishing trip beers, and too big and too high ABV for this point.

This beer is f-ed up. There's chocolate, but a strange, Frankenstein flavor. Not digging it at all. I got a 6 pack of this, and am regretting it. I had to add it to the system, and am regretting it.

Pours pitch black. 2 finger frothy off white head. The head retention is poor. No lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose is quite minimal. Just the faintest hint of chocolate.
Taste - Bizarre. It's a very strange chocolate. I like unsweetened baking chocolate, which is bitter. This isn't, but it isn't sweet either. Just strange, and I'm having a tough time describing it.
A very strange feel. Not bad, but strange.
Weird, strange beer, and I'm not a big fan of it. I probably wouldn't get any more of this.

I hope my beer next Sunday is better than this. I have a feeling there's a good chance it will be.

As a father of twin 2 and a half year olds, this was the first Father’s Day that my kids had some idea about what was going on. They were excited to give me the cards they made and ‘helped my wife’ bring me waffles and bacon in bed. It was a nice morning. I think I actually slept for more than 5 hours in a row for the first time since before they were born. That was a great gift!!

I tend to do most of my beer drinking at home. Occasionally I’ll go out with a couple friends. I did this yesterday for the first time in forever. A local place had a tap takeover by Cloudwater and Other Half. I had some great beers. I enjoy doing this occasionally. By and large though, I prefer imbibing on my living room couch.

Tonight’s new beer is courtesy of @Jimmy_Kneecaps from the recent NBS BIF. It’s an Imperial Milk Stout from Bearded Iris called White Hot.

Pours a pitch black with very minimal head with no retention and no lacing.

Sweet brown sugar on the nose. Minimal aroma overall.

Sweet up front on the tongue. Milky. Dates, figs, prunes and assorted macerated fruit. Boozy.

    Syrupy. Almost no carbonation.

This is a reasonably enjoyable beer. I’m not sure the style is one that benefits from ‘imperialization.’ I like the sweetness, but the boozyness and the limited carbonation don’t quite mesh for me.

    Cheers.

One more for the NBS thread, one more from Phase Three. I almost feel like this beer is a cautionary tale, and it’s part one of said tale tonight. I love craft beer, and I love pro wrestling. Recently, we have been treated to excitement in both in the Chicago area. Phase Three released their first stout, Curvature, and there were stories of people rushing to stores, and long lines, and high secondary market prices (as in slightly less than $200 a bottle). I am a lucky guy who has an in, so I got one, and because the guy who told me about it is a relative who is becoming a dad in the next few months, I decided to open it tonight to share with him on his last before he becomes a father father’s day. And earlier this weekend, I also tried to get tickets for All Elite Wrestling’s second show in the Chicago area, and I struck out, because when 140,000 people try to get 11,000 tickets, the odds are stacked against you. But then an hour after the sale finished, I got a text that a friend of my brother would sell me two floor seat tickets at face value. Two tickets going in the $2,000 range on the secondary market for $100 a piece? Um, yes, I will take that and buy you a T-shirt and whatever else you want at the show, sir.

So here’s my question after all this luck fell onto my stupid ass this weekend: does the demand for rare things actually make them better when you get them?

I don’t know. In the question of beer, I have to say...maybe. Curvature has a shit ton of flavor. It’s got enough hazelnut in it to make a squirrel sell out his mama for a taste, and there’s chocolate and roasty malt for days. It’s rich, it’s bold, it’s flavorful, and it’s delicious. Am I glad I got it? Abso-fucking-lutely yes. Is it a great beer? I’m leaning toward a 4.5 or so rating. Is it worth the hype and value on the secondary market? Personally, I have found very few beers to be so, and this is one of them. I’ve never paid three figures for a beer, and I wouldn’t start with this one. Now if Shaun barrel aged it...

As for pro wrestling, I’ll tell you Labor Day weekend.

Happy Fathers Day, fellow NBSers! Went golfing today for the first time in a couple years. Started well and, well, it ended. My wonderful wife granted an old man his one wish and bought him a new toy. Now watching Logan with some Bourbon County on deck, my Fathers Day tradition since she got it for me two years ago on the same day. Have a 2014 BCBS this year so I feel really fancy. Enough words, here are some pics....

DDH Wild Gooseberry Chase. Poured from a crowler canned on 6/7 at the source. Not much head retention but good lacing. Nose is overripe melon, peach, citrus, orange rind and fresh oj. Taste follows with peach gummy ring and orange and lemon pez. Mouthfeel is creamy and moderate to full. Overall excellent brew in the 4.5 range.

Excellent choice. As your beer journey continues, you'll find a few better RISs and a LOT that are worse. Old Raspy is one you can always count on to be very good.
