I see many folks saying they do like stouts in the summer, but that these stouts are enjoyed in the evening or by a fire pit. This suggests to me that stout/porter drinking is for when it's not hot out (which is totally understandable). I actually would really like to have a session stout, hell, let's call it a hot weather stout. I recall having a 3.9% abv porter at Dieu De Ciel in Montreal. Can't remember the name. It was awesome. I was drinking it in October and remember thinking that I would like to have lots of that stuff around when it's balls hot in the summer. A low abv stout is nice to have after a few ice cold pilsners on the beach.

Not exactly easy to obtain If your not in Maine but Cadillac Mountain Stout by Bar Harbor Brewing Has always been a go to summer stout for me. It’s labeled as a dry Irish Stout at 6.7% and very quaffable. If I remember correctly it used to rate very high on BA back in the dark ages.

This is where the Dunkel lager comes in for me. I still enjoy dark beer when it's hot out but I don't really crave the roasted malt flavor from a stout. Just give me something with rich Munich malt that still drinks light and clean. Most of them fall in the 4.5-5.5% ABV range and they go great with grilled food and barbecue.

Similarly - when I was in Belize a few years ago - Belikin is the only brewery in the country and besides a few lagers, the other beers they brew are Stout, and a contract brewed version of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.

That's basically the taste profile of some Tropical or Foreign Extra Stouts - they often have some dried fruit notes mixed in with the roasty flavors.

Besides Guinness FES, you can probably find these:
