Idk it seems a bit of a reach for some of these. But if you add some, you should probably juat add them all. Radler/shandy sure. Pastry stout?

If we’re getting this picky, we could start catergorizing beers by boil time or something. Also need to make an entire style category for micheladas too.

How would you define German Porter? I understand there were historical examples, but it sounds like it was basically English style Porter just brewed in Germany.

    What would be modern examples?

From The Oxford Companion To Beer:

"The German porter style was developed in the 19th century from a bottom-fermented and relatively strong dark lager (typically 13 to 16°Plato) that undergoes a secondary fermentation with a top-fermenting ale yeast and in some cases with Brettanomyces."..."During World War I, when it seemed “unpatriotic” to drink a British-style beer in Germany, German porter went out of fashion. Relatively pure forms of the style have survived in Karlsruhe’s Hoepfner brewery and in Meissner Schwerter brewery in Meissen, Saxonia."

Not that I think there need to be contemporary expressions of a style for it to be considered a style per se.

Is there a commercial example of a Kristallweizenbock?

Zoigl is not a style (I will repeat this as often as necessary).

Well considering we're talking about beer styles for the purpose of the BA database of beer reviews, that seems pretty relevant.

It doesn't seem unique enough that the few modern examples couldn't just be categorized as English or Baltic Porter depending on the individual beer characteristics.

While I appreciate historical beer "styles", with some you are really splitting hairs and if you did the same thing with modern beers/breweries you'd end up with thousands of "styles".

It sounds like this beer is 'leaning' towards being a New Zealand Pilsner (not that I am advocating for that 'new' beer sub-style).

    Cheers!

I have not seen many, but Sixpoint Brewery's Cosmic Handshake is an:

IPA - Imperial New England or IPA - New England (Imperial)

as identified on the CAN in the approved pic. Hmm.

Ron, can you provide examples of beers available today that are German Porters? Do those breweries label those beers as being "German Porter"?

    Cheers!

@patto1ro or @Snowcrash000 would know better, but I think Freigeist brews a German porter. I vaguely remember seeing a German porter from them on the shelf - but I don't know how old it was.

Freigeist did a few German Porters, but I'm pretty sure they're all discontinued now. There's also a small microbrewery just outside of Cologne that has revived the pretty much extinct Knupp beer style, which you could probably put under the German Porter umbrella, being a bottom-fermented, dark and malty beer with roasted, bitter nuances. It's a local style that used to be brewed in and just outside of Cologne until the beginning of the 20th century. Now that I think about it, Freigeist also did a Knupp beer in collaboration with Against The Grain at some point.

JA has renamed it simply "German Style Porter" (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26520/343219/)
It's a seasonal part of their Keller series and VERY good.
Noticeably different from most other porters, it has the taste and body of a Baltic, without the high ABV (5.7). Listed as a Baltic since that's the closest category

    Which season is it available?

Is it widely distributed? I obtain some of the Jack's Abby brands in my area but I have never seen this brand on my local beer retailers' shelves.

    Cheers!

Keller distribution is hit & miss around here. It was on the shelf from the beginning of January til the end of February. IIRC it was about $10/16oz 4 pack.

Thanks for the 'heads up'. I will have to remember to look for this beer in Jan/Feb 2021 and cross my fingers that my local beer retailers can access this beer.

    Cheers!

Sadly all the true examples of the style seem to be dead.
