I had it for the first time at the source when visiting Cleveland in July but regret not giving it a review. Such a great beer

A tad dated since I forgot to add it to this thread when I had it.

    Bewilder - Mole Porter

Brewed with cacao, cinnamon, and chipotle peppers.
    Canned on 10.27.23
Purchased from the brewery cooler for $3
Poured at fridge temp into a nonic glass

Pours a seemingly thick oily black, with a cola tan head that rose quickly and fell just as fast. No lacing or residual head, but an oily slick left behind a long with some visible rising carbo popping the surface. 4

Dark bakers chocolate, some smoked chipotle and pepper, cinnamon too makes a slight appearance. Reminds me of Mole Negro. 4.25

Taste follows exactly how I remember mole negro. Smoky, savory, unsweet chocolate, soft peppery heat. It's quite delicious and while not rich I'd consider it robust. 4.5

Oily appearance carries and leaves a light trace behind. Fairly full nearing chewy body, soft carbo. 4

Overall a delicious adjunct laded English porter that is billed exactly as advertised. Incredibly well made with flavors that could have easily gone awry but blended perfectly and for the intended effect. Will absolutely buy again. 4.25

Looks like my kind of brew right there. Would love to try it.

I have endless opportunities for awesome beer in my neck of the woods. With one exception, I never find myself wishing a beer out of my distribution area were regularly on my shelves. Edmund Fitzgerald is that exception.

I consider myself lucky then, that it’s quite abundant here in SEPA! As are most of Great Lakes offerings. I hope that they start distributing in RI!

Just saw Victory has a new winter porter. Still sick but will be on the lookout once I’m back up and beer drinking again. I also want to grab a case of Alpha Claus and that Shoo Fly sound interesting as well.

    Enjoy

Thanks for posting, somehow I missed that announcement and it looks like it a straight up unadjunct beer. That’s surprising given most of victory’s beers these days. For those interested…

Apologies for going off topic but speaking of offensive beer names from Utah, I believe you had sent me one called False Prophet. It seems that folks in Utah like poking fun at themselves, which is a very British quality, and I love it.

Great thread by the way. As the weather turns cold and my craving for darker beers is getting stronger, I'd be looking here for recommendations.

Do you get Millstream beers regularly in CO? I haven't seen them in MN or the Dakotas. I may have to reroute through Iowa when I'm westbound!

Oh yeah, its a great counter culture here

Hell's Keep, Outer Darkness, False Prophet, Elder Brett, Big Bad Baptist, Polygamy Porter, Happy Valley Hefe, Provo Girl, are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I think its spread to spirits too, with Madame Patrini and Five Husbands

I wish there were more porters and average gravity stouts around. You have to try hard to make a bad one.

IMO, Alesmith Porter is hard to beat for the price. I got a 6 pk x 12 oz cans for $7. It is rated 88 pts on BA (see Porter | AleSmith Brewing Company | BeerAdvocate). Much richer and creamier than I expected for the price, with hints of coffee+chocolate. Unexpectedly nice.

Agreed. Unfortunately, we are stuck sitting on a batch from spring of 21 in my area. I did my best to drink through it up until about 18 months ago and now I just grimly check dates from time to time to confirm it's still the same old batch. Hope we get a fresher drop at some point.

In happier news, I stopped into local Eel River Brewing and was delightfully surprised to find their increasingly rare porter on tap (no packaged portions this run ). It's my favorite porter that leans into the sweeter/chocolate end of the spectrum and it's organic to boot.

I've been enjoying Crux Brewngs PCT Porter at home. Has a solid roast character and coffee notes. Kind of the other end of the spectrum from the Eel River in my glass. The wonders of the porter rainbow!

How was this one? On tap it's good but the cans are hit-or-miss. Last time I bought some they were loaded with diacetyl.
