so we recently found out my wife is pregnant. over the past year or two, she has become quite a beer connoisseur. on our latest trip to the liquor store, she picked out a few non-alcoholic brews to try...pauliner, kaliber, and another i cant recall. Basically, they all tasted like crap, especially next to what im drinking.
my question is, has anyone found a decent tasting non-alcoholic beer? do any craft brewers dare to venture down this lonesome road? is it just best to stick to yellow water versions like coors/odouls?

FYI Most if not all non-alcoholic beers in USA, in fact contain 0.5% alc. Just like all the FAT FREE stuff, contains 0.5% alc. Good luck!

No, by law, they have to contain "less than 0.5% alcohol by volume" and have to be so labeled, to be marketed as "near beer" or "non-alcoholic cereal beverage". http://www.ttb.gov/beer/bam/chapter1.pdf (pg. 1-7)

The actual ABV can vary below that limit - AB's three major NA brands, Beck's Blue, St. Pauli Girl NA and O'Doul's, for instance, are 0.15%, 0.15% and 0.4% respectively.

Not much to suggest since I've no idea what you can find where you are in CA.

    But if you start here:

The Rogue is passable. (And might have ABV low enough.)

Good luck with the beer and the eventual new addition to the family.

Congrats to you. H2O gets my vote. Besides think of how great that 1st taste of real suds will be once your bundle of joy is out & about. What's out there is pretty sad, it would be interesting to see a craft brewer tackle this style. And why not, several have produced gluten free, which is a chore in it's self I'm sure.

The Rogue is a mead and it is 5.2% ABV. No idea why they put that up there when it isn't even beer.

Wondered about that but didn't double check. Good catch. Definitely doesn't belong on that list then....

Your query is somewhat compromised by the fact it sounds like you're looking for something for your pregnant wife to drink and @jesskidden pointed out that there is alcohol in non-alcoholic beers. Negligible enough amount? I don't know.

For pregnant women, I'd recommend water

For anyone else looking for a good-tasting non-alcoholic beer, I'd recommend water :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: Someone just challenged my post above claiming I've never seen a near beer label [unless I hallucinated it :astonished:?] but that post seems to have been deleted.
Since I went to the trouble----:grinning:

Just skip the Rogue. I had that one wrong, as did the list...

And be sure your wife chats with her Dr. about any alcohol consumption.

As @Greywulfken points out abstinence may be the best course of action.

I am not aware of any Non/Low Alcoholic beers that are tasty. Every Non/Low Alcoholic beer that I have ever tasted (and I will grant that is has not been many) sucked.

In a past thread I made mention that alcohol in beer plays the role of a flavor enhancer. My understanding is that the absence of alcohol in beer significantly impacts the ability of the beer to be flavorful (tasty).

I will continue to monitor this thread. Maybe some BA has found a Non/Low Alcoholic beer that is tasty?

    Cheers!

We get it in Canada in most places. It's a shame you don't get it, it's actually very good!

I went through the same thing when my wife was pregnant and had beer cravings. In order of personal preference:
    - Weihenstephaner Alkoholfrei Hefeweizen (
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/252/12600/)
    - Franziskaner Alkoholfrei (
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/142/78272/)
    - Schlossgold (
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/319/27115/)
    - Weihenstephaner Alkoholfrei Original (
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/252/72283/)

I tried a few others, but these were the only ones that I would consider drinking again.

There are also two others, however I don't consider them to be Beer, more like malt-based soft drinks:
    - Best Malz
    - Karamalz Non Alcoholic Fresh Lemon Malt Drink

My advice would be to avoid alcohol entirely and stick to water. Maybe have a sweet rootbeer or sarsaparilla on occasion if she wants to switch it up.

I just read an article on Thrillist about this - O'Douls won, hands down.
