The local Liquor Store just got Breakfast Stout in, so naturally I dropped everything and got some.

I bought a 4pack last year and finished it off not too long after, but I had heard some people talk about "cellaring" it.

It says specifically to keep refrigerated and drink fresh, as well as only being 8.3%, but do y'all think it would keep well over time?

    Opinions?

Imperial stouts taste even better when aged for a bit. Drink some now, then drink some later. :grinning:

I have stored non-refrigerated for well over a year and it is just fine. Always stock up toward end of season. Speaking of, I prefer their Imperial Stout more after a year or 2, like Bell's Expedition (not that you asked)

It cellars just fine. Coffee might die down a tad but not to the extent that many will claim here...recently had a 2012 and coffee was still there. That being said, I prefer to age Founder's IS more than FBS.

Yes. The coffee fades, but it is pretty solid with a year on it.

I have a 2013 FBS I've been holding on to, to see how it ages. Planning on drinking it this weekend so I will post my thoughts.

I've had it as old as a year (still have some bottles dated 11/2013). I think more answers that come on here than not will be as follows:

"Depends on how you like it..."
"Coffee notes fade with age, Chocolate notes come forward with age, more body with age, less heat with age"

Some people saying this years is too boozy right now (I disagree) - but aging will help that. I personally like it fresh better than aged, because I am a coffee beer freak.

sooo i forgot about a 2012 for a few years, mostly it was in the fridge at 55 degrees. anyways. that batch in 2012 sucked fresh, i mean sucked. hence i forgot about it

opened it recently and it was amazing. bursting flavors and beautiful coffee

i used to be against aging this but i have since changed my mind

Why buy a coffee forward stout only to age the coffee out of it?* Many better option out there for cellaring, fresh is best.

*The coffee flavor will remain but the intensity and quality of this flavor falls off very quickly.

Best fresh, but still perfectly fine a year out. The coffee diminishes, allowing the chocolate to step forward more. Not necessarily better, just different.

Imperial stout is for aging. Breakfast stout is for drinking at breakfast during winter.

I have a 2010 in my cellar that I totally forgot about. If I drink it, will I die?

Drink it fresh. If you like coffee, it fades over time. Regardless, I wouldn't cellar for more than a year and only to compare to a current release to note the difference.

I personally like this one fresh. With some age, the coffee tends to fade in my opinion.
