So those of you who have been on WBAYDN will have seen that my wife gave birth to our first born on Monday night.

She played a blinder and Lukas was born at 10.19pm. He was 9lbs and 1oz so not small for a first baby and my wife delivered him naturally without any pain killers except the gas and air... needless to say I'm very proud of her and amazed by what she did.

AS a result I have not been online since last weekend. Now I'm not a heavy drinker by any means, tending to only have one beer an evening and not drinking every night but as I had not had one in almost a week I wanted something special for my first one.

I had actually intended to have this last Sunday but we were called into the hospital on Sunday as it was his due date the next day and in the UK they tend to encourage natural delivery and will do a few things to induce the labour to encourage said natural delivery...

So this week with my little guy beside me I got tore into a Proper Job, which is a nice Cornish IPA...

Appearance - Rich Golden Amber colouration, just like the big lump of amber in Jurassic Park. produces a think rocky head that has about average retention and dies to a lace cover in around 5 minutes. Some light evidence of CO2.

Smell - Floral tones are evident and there is ample pine hops with some mild citrus leanings all balanced by sound sweet malt aromas.

Taste - Hoppy pine punch from the first sip all the way to the back end, this punch is balanced out by sweet malts of caramel and toffee. Very bitter on the back end with slight touches of burnt sulfur like the taste of spent match heads some oaky wood nips and a tiny hint of lime.

MF - Oddly thin this one but as it has such good linger with a pleasantly drying finish it is not a problem for me.

Overall - Very well balanced almost like an equally matched boxing round between hops and malts on your tongue. I feel this beer is a great testament to the strength of British brewing and the rounded nature of a good IPA!

So here is me, Lukas and Morris the Moose

Howdy, y'all. It's a little chillier here in central OK than it's been the past few days, but it's a beautiful day. My new beer is Left Hand milk stout Nitro. I have had the regular many times, but this is my first nitro one. Poured from a bottle hard into a pub glass. That's what the label says to use. Black or maybe very, very dark brown. Takes a moment to form the head, which is tan and about 1/2 inch. Smell reminds me of coffee stouts, which I like. Taste has some coffee flavor also, but seems a little restrained . Lacing is pretty thick on sides too. The taste is a lot like the regular, but I don't think I'm crazy about Nitro beers. All the ones I've had have that same almost-creamy mouthfeel that I can't quite describe. Still a good beer and I'm glad I tried it.

Peace to all of you, and especially BeerDrinkersWorldTour. He is certainly a Proud Papa today and I'm sure he will make a fine Dad.

I post this at the risk of being banned from NBS for blasphemy, but I think it counts as a new beer  We didn't get any variants in my market this year, so I decided to do some experimenting to make my own. I tried Winter Grind last night and wasn't overly impressed due to the thin body, but the flavor was good and I thought it might balance out the syrupy thick body of the BCBS. All in all its a great "blend" but I doubt I'll do it again. For what it's worth a buddy and I split a growler of BCBS Friday night, and we mixed in some FBS on our second glasses and it was phenomenal. A side benefit is that your BCBS lasts longer this way. As we say in the south, poor folks got poor ways

Speaking of the south, its 75 and windy in central AR. Dusted the bikes off for a 15 mile ride this morning and then proceeded to hang the outside lights. I'm taking a break to enjoy a cigar and my concoction before starting phase two of the lights. Cheers!
The poorman's variant experiment continues. FBS made a better mixer IMO

    Good evening NBS folks.
I started the midday with this offering from Evil Twin.
All in all a big, but thin Imperial Stout. Interesting in its flavors. I
will pick up another and see if time resting helps it along.
    Cheers All

Bottle poured into a modified tulip glass.
A - Deep dark color, passes some light through. Well carbonated structure creates
mocha cap. Lacing rings the glass throughout the entire experience.
S - Hints of mint, bakers chocolate, and honey. Interesting nose, with some time
floral components including tobacco are released. More honey less cocoa.
T - Big wallop here, no attempt to hide the alcohol. Those chocolate notes are dominant,
reluctant to give up, eventually fading to show the beers real depth.
F - Surprisingly light in body, a hot mouth feel starts then the carbonation cleans up.
As an Imperial I thought the body could be richer, more rounded.
O - A beer that with some focus could go from good to great. Mouth feel, muddled body, make this a good Imperial Stout.

    Cheers all

I only had this beer once many years ago, so it is still kind of new, because I never took any notes and do not remember what it was like.

Brown Shugga' has a sweet and hoppy scent with notes of overripe pineapple and a bit of melon. Hints of pine are also found, but it moves into the brown sugar and caramel malts.

The taste starts off with a tropical hop flavor with notes of overripe pineapple and passion fruit. There is a bite of pine bitterness right before it moves into the maltiness of the beer. The sweetness is brown sugar, caramel, and sweet bread. When fresh the hops stand out.

Solid beer that is really nice for this time of year!

Happy NBS! I was perusing through my stash today and decided that I didn't feel like cracking anything open right now since it mostly consists BA stouts, and Belgians, and sours OH my! Oh well, off to the grocery store! It's a little overcast and windy in Memphis today, so I figured that I might want to pick up a winter beer pack today. Sierra Nevada's hasn't reached my market yet, so I grabbed the Sam Adams winter pack. Never had Old Fezziwig and White Christmas, so those are my new beers this week. First up: White Christmas.

Pours slightly hazy. A golden orange color dominates the body of the beer with the outer edges being a pale straw. Slight head with almost no lacing. 3.5

Smells is what one might expect from a belgian wit. Typical orange peel and spice present, but with added depth. Nutmeg and cinnamon are more discernible than the other "holiday spices". Bready malt present but faint. 3.75

Taste is like a spiced orange. Lots of orange peel and bready malt to begin with. Moves into more of a holiday spice/mulled cider kind of taste. Nutmeg flashes on the finish but lingers, intermingling with more complex spice profiles that I can't ascertain. Overall very impressed by this beer. 4.25

Mouthfeel is nice. Kinda creamy, but still very crisp upfront. 3.5

Overall a great offering from Sam Adams. I know they get crap sometimes, but they are still very capable of producing a good beer. 3.75

Working on the Old Fezziwig now. I'll post the review in a little bit!

So now onto the next one...

    Old Fezziwig

Pours a very dark copper amber color, edging into almost brown. Not much head, and no lacing. 3.75

Smell is rich with sweet biscuity malts. Some traditional holiday spice: cinnamon, nutmeg, and others. Some dark candied fruits, prunes mostly. 3.75

Taste is rich and sweet, just like the nose. Sweet rich biscuity malt is only balanced out by some holiday spice. Not much finish, dark fruit and sweet malt. 3.75

Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin for how malty this beer smells and tastes. 3.25

Overall a good beer. I was looking forward to this one the most out of the pack, but it honestly isn't my favorite. I would have preferred a more heavy mouthfeel. Still a very good beer. With a slightly creamier body and a little more depth in flavor, this would have gotten high marks. 3.5

Found it interesting what my rDev was for both of the new beers in the SA Winter Pack. For White Christmas I was +13.5 and for Old Fezziwig I was -3.2. I honestly thought they would be the other way around, but I really did enjoy the White Christmas more. Wits are not my favorite style, but White Christmas is actually my favorite beer in the pack right now.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but I heard early on that Brown Shugga was a barleywine gone off-track that ended up being great beer. Thank goodness for adventurous brewers.

First time poster in this thread...here goes....

My week was pretty good. Thursday was great, and work is going well. Just started a two bathrooms remodel for one of our favorite clients. A fun project with some interesting post - and - beam details coupled with vaulted ceilings and some pretty intricate tile and stone work. Love jobs like this.

Bought some great beers this week, now I'm kickin' back watching the Pats game.

    Jack's Abby Hoponius Union.

Picked this up this weekend in a mix-six, still have very limited experience with Jack's Abby.

A great beer, indeed. Pours with a nice, foamy head. The aroma is not too strong, that of hops and fruit (lemons), maybe a slight malt kick. The taste is just an absolutely perfect example of a smooth, hoppy pale ale that hits all the right notes and strongly resembles the nose. Hops on the initial impact, and a nice citrus finish. The malt is present, but the 6.7%ABV certainly is not. This is the kind of thing that can open a mindless sud-water drinker to a world of well balanced, fantastic craft alternatives. Nothing too crazy, a good beer for almost any situation.

All in all, a pretty perfect beer, one that will make my regular rotation for sure.

    New Imperial Stout Sunday

Happy NBS everyone! It was a pretty nice day here in Central Ohio, temperatures got around 60 today so I can't complain about that this time of year. Especially since the high tomorrow will be around 40. Got done watching the Bengals somehow win their game earlier, and I'm kinda watching New England/Green Bay right now. For my first new beer of the day, I had Jackie O's Bourbon Barrel Wood Burner imperial smoked stout. Not very smoky, but a very tasty brew anyways: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1432/146497/?ba=bluejacket74

I'm lazy so I'll post my pics on the WBAYDN thread later. I'll have another review on here in a bit. Cheers!

    Greetings All:

Checking in from the great and frozen northwest, winding down the big holiday weekend. Today it is Sierra Nevada Coffee Stout. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/135684/?ba=RJLarse

A decent stout, if a little long on the coffee flavors. It would appeal to the northwest coffee crowd.

Thanksgiving Day was sunny and mid 60's, and Friday was similar. A good day to put up the outdoor holiday lights. Yesterday the temperature plunged to 28 for the high, single digits overnight, and today sunny and upper 20's. What a difference a few days makes.

I'm out of new beers in the DBF, so when we venture out next weekend in search of the Christmas Tree I'll put some bottle shops on the itinerary.

    Happy Trails!
