Enjoying this brew while watching the Habs trying to close their series. Grapefruit most definitely present, bit more of a discreet IPA but the flavor is pulpy and good!

Cloudy and gray in north of Boston today. Was still able to get in a hike with the wife without getting rained on. Bonus points for 'together time'! Rain predicted, and needed. Saw my hops start shooting from the ground, so am glad the 2100000 ft of snow we got didn't wipe them out in there second year of life.
Anyways, drinking a Blushing Monk from Founders, a Belgian style ale with Raspberries. Described simply on Untappd (clicker here) as a fruit beer, and that's all I taste. Wifey loves the color (deep red and clear), and the smell (all berry), but that's all there is. Give me some tart, or funk, or even dryness. The most one note beer I've had since Habanero Sculpin made my pee burn. Part of a Beer of the Month club membership, so not something I would ever buy, but Hey, that's the point of BOTM anyways. Happy NBS...Wife due with first child last Friday, so tick tick tick.....

You'd have to go back to page one for the first NBS post of this brew today (of 3!).

I don't know about medicinal, exactly, but I got a slightly minty finish; it was hard to place. Unlike Nate, I did get some citrus, but it was kind of washed in with everything else. I think the only thing we all had in common today was a creamy mouthfeel from the oats. :sunglasses:

    I saw that- nice job!

I could see minty. The Lagunitas website suggests it might taste of eucalyptus, so that's closer to what I got. It's probably just one of those weird hop things similar to how some people taste onions but others don't, or maybe like how cilantro tastes like soap to certain people.

For a 3.7% ABV brew, this thing is fantastic. Lots of tart lemon flavor with a nice balancing grain taste in the background, Saint Arnold's Boiler Room Berliner weisse seems to contain its tartness in a very German way -- as in, this doesn't have anything approaching funky or super sour in the Belgian way nor in the American wild ale way. Call it a tidy tartness.

The most remarkable feature for me is the light, crisp mouthfeel. It's perfect for drinking lots of this beer. A growler of this brew would do the trick on a day of outdoor drinking here in Texas.

Thanks to all you NBSers who taught me quite a bit about music over the past year or two. I'll be looking for some of your offerings in WBAYDN in the future (especially after the late shift when the LNBAs come out :grinning:).

    Prost!

Hello NBS Crew! I was lucky to have the weekend off along with my girl so we took a road trip up to the City of Brotherly Love for the first time. We split Cheese Steaks at Pat's and Geno's, ran up the Rocky Steps, and walked around town looking at all the great architecture. Before heading back to Bmore, I stopped at a local liquor store and made a few mix 6s with brews I have not had access to as well as ones that have been on my radar but have not seen around my neck of the woods. Today we enjoyed the beautiful Baltimore afternoon at Camden Yards.

    The good guys won 18-7!

Now I'm wrapping up the weekend watching Mad Max, eating homemade pizza, and a few beverages. First brew of the evening...
A fantastic brew. Huge juicy orange and tangerines aromas in the nose. One of the best noses on an IPA I have experienced. Flavor goes in an opposite direction...big resinous and DANK bitterness. As it warms up, citrus and mango chime in, but the aggressive hop bitterness fights back and lingers for days. Great Stuff!

    Happy NBS!

    Cheers!

    Greetings All:

Today we have Transcend IPA from Heather Brewing. A good IPA perhaps just a hair on the cloying side.

Gorgeous day here in the Columbia Basin, sunny with temps in the mid 60's. I spent yesterday putting down a tile floor, so it was good to stand erect today and get out doors to deal with the lawn.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

    New names sour beer Sunday.

Good afternoon to everyone on NBS. Raining and cool here in the mile high city. Went to a small tasting at my local store yesterday and tried some good new stuff from oskar blues ( No names yet just test batches ) any way on my way out I saw this little number sitting on the shelf (last one) Pours a lovely golden orange and the smell is just all sour peaches and a touch of pineapple. Taste follows the nose to a t. Ultra dry finish and just another great beer from Boulevard. Never got to try any of the other ones so I will review fully later. Cheers

My brother in law grabbed me a growler from a new brewery here in CT. I have yet to have any of their beers until this evening. The beer is called a hop and a dream and was filled yesterday at Steady Habbit Brewery. Its a galaxy IPA that clocks in at 6.2% ABV and 70 IBUs. I am exciteded to give them a try.

Looks: I do not mind cloudy beers, but I really appreciate when an IPA is clear or almost clear and this beer is nice and clear (it is not the end of the world when clouny either). Not much head, but a little lacing. If it had a small head it would be a flawless looking beer. 4.5

Aroma: Galaxy hops, tropical fruit smell, pungent, not much else 4

Taste: Galaxy hops up front with some fruitiness, but gives way to some piny bitterness that lingers, almost no other flavors. 4

Feel: Nice level of carbonation, slick mouthfeel, not to thin or thick, but could use a little head to help with the mouthfeel. 3.75

Overall: A nice beer, but with some many other choices for great IPAs its probably not worrth going out of the way for. However, if I lived close or am driving any where near the place when open, then I will surely stop by and pick this up or some of their other offerings. A solid offering and I am curious what their other beers will taste like. 4

    New Milk Stout Sunday

    Hey NBSers,

The High Desert has been fiiled with sun, rain, hail, and a bit of snow (usually all in the span of a few hours), making it a good day to settle in with a beer. Wait, they're all good days to settle in with a beer... I'm staring down the barrel of a bunch of early shifts at work this week, so I decided to call an audible on the boozy beer I had planned for today and switched to something more modest.

Cocoa Cow by Sunriver Brewing of Sunriver, Oregon

Sunriver Brewing opened a brewpub in the resort village about 3 years ago, and had contracted their production with another local brewery. They did fantastic business from the get go, but the contract brewery did not do a very good job with their beers so locals tended to dismiss them as a tourist trap. When they opened their own production facility after a year, their brand had some bad first impressions to overcome, but they hired a respected local Brewer to design new recipes and try to capture some local buzz again (no easy task when our small region has been birthing 4-5 new breweries per year for the last few years). Word started to get around that Sunriver had gotten it's house in order and was no longer content to sell to ski and golf vacationers with few other draft options in the resort. Last year, they won the People's Choice Award for their SMaSH beer during Central Oregon Beer Week. It's been interesting to see up close how a brewery off to a rocky start can put energy into the talent and resources needed to turn around their beer and achieve success.

Cocoa Cow pours an opaque dark chocolate brown with a full mocha head. Cocoa dominates the aroma with a little creaminess sneaking in. Legs reveal moderate to high residual sugars. The roasted cocoa nibs from Ghana are at the forefront of the taste too, lots of soft chocolatey notes with a little roast on the back end to balance the sweetness. It's not super complex, but there's some depth to the chocolate that keeps it from being a one-note novelty beer. I'll recommend this to the novice and beer geek alike, there's something for everyone to appreciate. At 6%, this is perfect for someone seeking a dessert beer who doesn't necessarily want a high octane barrel aged cordial. 4/5

Good afternoon NBS BAs! I am starting a bit late today but better late than never!

    New Mint Chocolate Stout Sunday
17 Mint Chocolate Stout - Perennial Artisan Ales 10% ABV

Poured a very dark black with a thin tan soda-looking head. With the mint being the dominant tone, I do smell the chocolate and even a slight hint of coffee. The taste is very much like the smell, dominated by mint and chocolate, I definitely taste the booze but it makes it interesting. The mouth feel is very much like taking a swig of a good stout while taking a bit of a York Peppermint Patty(yes, I have done it before, not too bad=), quite rich, cool and fresh followed by going down warm with the 10% ABV making itself known.

This came highly recommended and I can see why. I was looking for something new and interesting and this lives up to it.
After reading some of the reviews, I was expecting a muddled mint bomb with no trace of body, but I was pleasantly surprised how nicely balanced this was. Yes, it's quite minty, but it does maintain the magical stout goodness. I would love to try the barrel-aged version.

    Cheers!

Back in the game with some new Michigan brews...

My wife and I wrapped up a great weekend with friends at Perrin Brewing. Lots of tasty apps, so-so dinner, and tasty brews accompanied a semi-private party and brewery tour.

The mild was really well done. Lots of malt flavor, sweet and nutty. The bitter was a little lacking, decent bready backbone with floral hops (came off as something like an herbal tea). Really good Belgian beer, somewhere between an amped up hefeweizen or a toned down tripel. Reviews will be entered soon.

Couldn't resist this option on a recent trip to a local bottle shop. I have wanted to try this for a while. Poured from fridge temp. Nice chocolate coming through right away, but not as much as I would have hoped. Quite a bit of bitterness, some roasted malts, and some raspberry. Definitely getting some smoke. Overall, a nice beer. Cheers all.

Back at it here in NBS. Making Calzones currently and smelling 'shrooms, pepperoni, and pretty sure the cats smell the cheese. Very happy with myself as I am trying one of the first beers I cellared (2013) and it is tasting EXCELLENT. No ill side effects from sitting in my nice rock lined basement. So, I'll stop teasing and get to the brew.
2013 Rock Art Bourbon barrel IRS. Pours black, and thick, and smells vanilla sweetness with caramel and roast behind. Tastes great! The bourbon burn has faded and now I really understand what the 'barrel flavor' can be. Happy this tastes good, for if it were a drain pour I'd be nervous about my other treasures that I am now going to start drinking thru. Happy NBS, and good night, bed early as Im Charge Nurse in a Boston ED tomorrow AM (!!)

New Beer Sunday: An American take on a Gose

Evenin NBSers, with special greetings to all you grateful guzzers of Gose.

Well the weather here today was really nice. A good bit of Sun, a light breeze and comfortably cool temperatures. There is one problem with weather like this, however. In the winter when its cold and icy we spend our time wishing we could go out. When the weather is good we spend some of our time looking at the chores that can now be done and wishing we were in the house doing other things..... But at least the hoses are out of the garage and the water has been turned on so they are ready to flow for watering the garden.

Guess I'm just one of those people who is never quite satisfied.

Tonight's new beer is the Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose and as usual the review is in progress (and subject to revision) here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/132073/?ba=drtth

This is a beer I'm definitely enjoying for its refreshing orange zest flavor and the tartness it has. The salt is very reserved and not easy to detect except towards the very end. I don't know how authentic this beer is and I suspect the beer purists would disapprove of it since by using blood oranges its clearly not a traditional Gose. However, since that style died out without having been brewed at all for about 25 years or so, even the folks who remember drinking the last "traditional" Gose many years ago were going on very old memories with lots of other beers having been consumed in those intervening years so I'm not entirely convinced that "traditional" in the case of Gose actually carries much weight.

Having checked in earlier I saw that the powers that be have requested that we not post links to music in this thread because somehow it creates more difficulties if linked here than if linked in that other nightly thread about what are you drinking now. So being a pretty cooperative type guy I've done just that, i.e., posted the links in the other thread.

The music i've been playing this evening is illustrated in links here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...u-drinking-now-918.284625/page-8#post-3583690

It was fun finding them for you since the original idea for what to listen to myself was simply the result of a play on words using Gose and goes, but it then, as many things do, evolved into something a wee bit different as that led me back to my collection of Louis Armstong on both CD and vinyl. The final link of the three doesn't include "goes" but is filled with some great word play.

    Cheers to all!
