Formerly Highway 128 Session Series: Blood Orange Gose
Tart, Refreshing Wheat Ale
Our Blood Orange Gose is an expression of how great a kettle soured beer can be. A careful hand during the souring process and liberal additions of blood oranges during fermentation impart tangy citrus notes that complement the bright gose flavors, creating a complex and sessionable ale perfect for any occasion.

Appearance: Pours out into a Duvel glass a light, hazed bright golden orange color with a 3/4” fluffy white head that recedes fairly quickly to a small ring around the glass and a tiny island of foam in the center of the glass and above the nucleation point. Sipping creates a few tiny speckles of lacing that either disappear or simply slide slowly back down to the liquid. Before too long even this no longer appears.
The aroma include orange zest from the blood oranges. The citrus is also a bit like orange pulp with hints of lemon/lime.
The flavors start off with mostly orange zest and pulp flavor and its not until the finish that a slight saltiness appears. Interestingly, after several sips it seems my lips are acquiring a light saltiness from the beer.
The mouthfeel of this beer is light bodied with a, slightly crisp feeling from a wee bit of light prickly carbonation. The finish is medium in length and flavors fade away in stages revealing toward the end, some saltiness mingling in with the orange zest then both disappear in the lightly tart dry finish that invites another sip.
I could see having a few of these on a hot summer afternoon or at an evening BBQ to serve as a counterpoint to the meal. As with the first Gose I tried this one is far enough from what I’ve read about the style that I’m grading it as much on enjoyment as fit with style. While it could almost be mistaken for an orange soda in some ways, what separates it out is the lightness of the beer, the light tartness, and the dryness. It would be hard to find an orange soda without too much sweetner in it.

A: crystal clear; deep gold in color; less than a 1 finger ivory head that receded quickly to a thin collar; no lacing;
S: a little funk with a hint of blood orange;
T: follows the nose with a hint of salt at the end;
M: light to medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;
O: not enough aroma or flavor in general and I would never have guessed that there was blood orange in this if it wasn't in the name;

Color looks like if someone were to take a Busch and pour in a dash of a hazy IPA into it. Citrusy, light, and refreshing in a disgusting sour beer kind of way. I’ll never understand why someone would drink these.

12oz can. Can bottom stamp is '21288 8443/4'.
Cloudy, orange amber colored body. Brief lasting off white head, which later is an interrupted cap and very thin ring. No lacing.
Aroma of citrus orange over the lactic acid.
Taste is tangy and sr. Citrus orange is there for the full profile. The salt is also present and mixes well with the sourness. Aftertaste just continues ouwith the main flavors.
Medium mouth feel. Salt on the lips is drying. Quiet carbonation.
Salty and sour, with the addition of orange. Seems to be thirst quenching.

Slightly dark yellow pour with a good amount of head that dissipates relatively quickly. Nose is typical gose with notes of orange and citrus. A solid beer with traditional gose flavor backed up by good orange notes. Mouth feel is a bit sharp at first and then smoothes out. If you like a gose, this is a good beer.

Typical medium to light golden amber color of a gose with a brief flash of a white head.
Tangy somewhat citrusy notes. More orange juice or Sunny D than citrus hops. Still decent, nothing I'd have again.

(12 oz can, 21207; purchased single off shelf at State Line a couple days ago... poured into a St. Bernardus chalice)
L: lightly-hazy, light amber liquid; quite tight white foam on the pour, crumbling to a thin, wispy cap in seconds... no lacing
S: pithy at first, with the coriander mildly apparent, I swear some orange flesh soon emerges, soft as it is; the fruit and spice make for a confectionar-ily floral scent... faint floury grain note, not malty or bready in any sense
T: certainly some orange tinge to its now wheaty, brightly-spiced foundation; craving a bit more saline and sour... aftertaste is delicately doughy, while the getting slightly more salty in the aftertaste as it goes
F: light-bodied and lifting across the palate, a bit airy on the floor, with some subtle simmer on the roof... wishing it had a bit more tart attack
O: not entirely dead at this age, but it's clearly lost some of its expressivity... popped more with bigger sips; would probably be quite nice swilling from the can in hot summer weather (2057)

Poured moderately hard from a can into a snifter glass, forming a ton of foamy white head that soon fades. Smell is citrus. Pale orange color. Taste is pretty intense citrus, not quite blood orange I think. Pretty strong bite of carbonation. Not really my thing, but good if you like citrus.

A solid gose that is on the better side. Slightly orange color without much head. It has a strong sour taste with a noticeable bit not overwhelming orange flavor. A nice aftertaste as well.
