    -> Poll #1 <- determined that the ABV target will be 6.5%.

    This poll will determine the target Final Gravity.

    I suggest thinking about residual sweetness, body, and mouthfeel, even though there is no (group) grain bill context yet, though there may be one in your head.

    Here is the formula I used to determine the potential FG/OG pairs.
    ABV = 131.25 x (OG - FG)
    There are formulae that would give slightly different answers. This is the one I used.

    This poll will be open for 48 hours.

    When this poll is done, I will look at the data a few different ways to determine if there is a central tendency. It may or may not be as simple as a plurality would indicate. There may or may not be a runoff(s). It all depends on the data.

    If you have issues with or suggestions for methodologies used in this project, please send them via beermail. Let's keep the threads themselves on topic to the question at hand and not about how you would have asked the question differently.

    I went with 1.012 based on experiences with this style and specific yeast strains that may or may not be used.

    I'm a solid vote for 1.012 as well. Seems to be the sweet spot for a target. If you end up at 1.013 it will still be a nice beer. Same if you overshoot and end up a little lower.

    1.012 for me as well, for the same reason. Gives you some wiggle room one way or the other.

    I went 1.011, only used Conan once and that's where my beer ended

    I just checked my 1318 fermentation and it was down from 1070 to 1022 in one week. That's 69% apparent attenuation, rounded up. I ramped the temp a bit, hoping it wasnt done. It's supposed to be 71% to 75%, which would bring it down to 1.018. Maybe this is useful to people voting?

    I went 1.059 to 1.011 with my las 1318 batch. That's 78.56% apparent attenuation.

    One comment, from a non-biased non-voter... attenuation is not only a function of yeast strain. Grain bill, mash temperature, and mash length are also significant factors. <back to lurker mode>

    VikeMan, wouldn't tying the OG to the FG in this poll be suggestive of the grain bill, temperature, mash parameters that we'll be voted on later? For example, a 1.060 beer might or might not finish at 1.010 depending on how those variables are voted on down the road.

    For that reason, I'm less inclined to worry so much about FG, as long as other considerations are made for body/mouthfeel. I'm voting 1.014.

    Yes. IMO recipe design involves a lot of tradeoffs you can't get away from. And you have to start somewhere.

    Having said that, recipe design is also often iterative, with previously decided parameters being revisited in light of other parameters chosen later. Thus the possibility of Buyers' Remorse polls.

    With mine I ended up at 1.012, but I felt it didn't have as much of a "fluffy" mouthfeel that I was targeting. It was more full bodied than I was expecting.

    I just brewed an APA and the fg is 1.015 after starting at 1.057. I wouldnt go less than this on a higher og beer for this style. the mouthfeel needs a slightly higher fg imo.
