Not a bad Murican version of a dubbel, a good way to start another beautiful day here in NW MI. We start heading in the general direction of home today, by way of Frankenmuth and the World Expo of Beer Fri and Sat - about the only beer fest I still attend.

Good morning folks! It's been a while. This is the THIRD installment of my ongoing saga.

Around this same time in both 2014 and 2015 I started/posted in the WBAYDN and told you of my tale (Here are installments one and two if you're interested: Year 1- http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/what-beer-are-you-drinking-now-571.178642/ and Year 2- http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...are-you-drinking-now-948.296009/#post-3685588).

    Basically it is this:

In 2013 I was accepted into a PhD program. I got into town a bit early on the day I went to orientation, so I popped into the nearby Whole Foods to grab a coffee. I wandered around the place and was excited to see that they sold beer in grocery stores in Connecticut (can't sell beer in grocery stores in Rhode Island). I saw a four pack of Old Rasputin, an old favorite of mine. I thought about how well that beer holds up over time and how it would be cool, if I were able to finish the program in the four years that I was hoping to, to have one Old Rasputin at the conclusion of each academic year.

In any event, amazingly, I am still on track! In spring 2014 I completed the first year of the course work. In spring 2015 I completed the second year of the course work (and, later that summer, the comprehensive exams), and as of this week, I have successfully defended my dissertation proposal. I now "only" need to do my dissertation. I know it's madness to think that I'll finish this whole thing by May of 2017, but fuck it, I haven't been derailed yet!
Most of you probably don't give two shits about my story of higher education, but I'm still excited by this and thought it could be something different for those of you WBAYD faithful.

As for the Old Raspy? It's fantastic as always. It's hard for me to describe how this has changed over time as I never take notes on such things. All I can say is that it is velvety and more boozy than I remember (though I don't drink many big beers at all, so perhaps I've just become accustomed to the lower ABVs). Regardless, it tastes great and it tastes even better knowing I have only one bottle left.

    Peace and be well.

I had this last night and it was wonderful. Other bottles I've had with different dates (sorry, I need to start keeping track) were terrible. I am really perplexed at this point.

New Belgium Trippel Belgian Style Golden Ale

I cannot say I could pick this one out in a blind tasting against classic Belgian Tripels such as Westmalle or Chimay. I like to think I could but wouldn't bet on it. It's that good.

Golden color abundantly scented with Belgian yeast, citrus and spices. Wonderful mousse like texture brimming with flavor. Has everything it needs and nothing it doesn't. Perhaps it lacks the complex sophistication of the master classics but need defer to none. All at a fraction of the price.
