Greetings All from the Great Northwest, where this week's selection comes from even farther north.

We spent last week vacationing with our trailer in southern British Columbia. So I have a little haul of Canadian beer.

Today it is Paddy Whack IPA from Nelson Brewing. A better than average balanced IPA, not the hop bomb we are accustomed to here on the west coast.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/674/6660/

Lovely people the Canadians, and keenly interested in our election. When they said "American aye, what do you think of your election?" I replied, "I came to Canada so I wouldn't have to think about it." They seemed to be OK with that answer.

A lot of Canadians were watching the GOP convention in their RVs, but I sat outside enjoying the air and drinking their beer.

    Until next time.

    Happy Trails!

New Beer Sunday: A swell saison.

Evenin' NBSers with special greetings to those seakers of swell Saisons..

Well, as for so many of us, the weater here was hot as h..., but at least the humidity was tolerable. Alas that is not in the forecast for tomorrow. As with last week (which I thought was warm enough  ) most all chores today were either fixing stuff around the house or using the air conditioning in the car while running errands. But I did get to peek in once in a while to check out the new beer line up. Lots of stuff to look for as usual.

For me, this evening's new beer is my third from Orpheus Brewing in Atlanta and is their Lyric Ale, a quite nice (a swell  ) Saison.

As usualy my review is still in progress until the beer is finished, and can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34960/133077/?ba=drtth#review

Basically i thought this a very good beer. It is a nice citric, fruity slightly spicy Saison that is quite refreshing after a hot day such as today. It is also noteworthy in that while pouring the beer in my standard fashion, the head almost rolled over the lip of the Duvel glass so it's had as much head to it as I'd expect from a bottle of Duvel. For my tastes this one is well worth having again and I'll pick up some more next time I happen across it. (It's a swell beer. )

Tonight's music for relaxation is a fringe benefit of having friends who are vinyl collectors so on the player this evening I have a loaner copy of some stuff by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. As Miller was one of the folks widely known from the "Big Band Era" of popular music it's nice to be reminded of the way things once were.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra doing one of their standard classics.

    Cheers, all!

A late entry for me but I was away on a 24h trip from Cleveland to Columbus and had tons to do as I got back. Enjoying this now having picked it up while down there. My grandpa loved to fish in Wisconsin for walleye. I didn't know they were in Ohio. Turns out they are, but mostly stocked & not breeding on their own.
While none of the walleye I've ever had tasted like grapefruit, this is still a nice beer. Grapefruit notes throughout, mostly grapefruit flesh but also a bit of pith as well. Some wheat and spice to round it out. Definitely tasty and packed with fruit for a session IPA though I'm a bit afraid it could become a bit monotone after putting down a few. Still a worthy addition to the category.
    Cheers!

WOW! What great posts once again for NBS! I'm sorry I'm so late to the party. Today was absolute hell at work, and I wasn't even working. The till died, so I spent 2 and a half hours reprogramming the back up till so it could be used as the main till. It would have been easier if I could have gotten the till to accept sales tax sooner.

Yeah I needed a beer, and had one at Beaver Island Brewing, but it wasn't new to me, so I had to wait till now for NBS

    And here it is

Sacred Gruit from Mountain Town Brewing

Damn! Such an easy drinking beer, but insanely flavorful. Well worth the wait.

This beer pours a murky reddish brown color. The head was minimal, but there is carbonation evident in the beer. The nose has a floral feel to it. The taste is light. Got a floral taste. Somewhat refreshing feel to it, and a easy drinking beer.

See you all next week for NBS! I'll be having a few new beers tomorrow when I go to the grand opening of Urban Moose Brewing in Sauk Rapids. Let's hope they have it right.

Opened a new-to-me saison today for NBS and my thread.

You can read about my reactions here (that and some talk about mussels in a saison broth).
(I liked one of these things more than the other.)

We have a gimmicky 12th Man Seahawk beer. Not so good. I attended Super Bowl 17 in Pasadena. That was the one when John Rigging just "dieseled" the Miami Dolphins. I think football was better when fullbacks were part of the game. Screw the diva receivers. Give me a guy who can go nose to nose with a D lineman. Man's game!

Flossmoor Station Barrel Aged No. 4 Barleywine
    American Barleywine - 10.1% ABV - 118 IBUs

    22oz bottle

Dated 4-14 and numbered 895. Poured into a snifter. The aroma is sweet, dark alcohol soaked fruits, and some oak/vanilla notes from the barrel. The taste starts out sweet, boozy, malty but the finish is much different with a big dose of bitterness coming in from the hops. This beer is listed with 118 IBUs so the finish does not come as much of a surprise. It does not have the bitterness of a 118 IBU beer, but the high amount of malt sweetness helps balance out the hops. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied. Overall, a solid barleywine. If feel like the large dose of hops takes a lot of the barrel away from the beer as the hops dominate a good deal of the finish.

Glad you liked it Jim. I actually brought that one for you without having tried it myself. A recommendation from my bottle shop. I finally tried it a few days after our meet up. My brother thought it was pretty good. My dad gave me a funny look.

    Well Helloooo Late Night NBS.
What a fantastic NBS thus far. Dave sure set the tone. And so many regulars really "brought it" today.
I'm back from a wonderful trip around Arizona. Many of the areas I travelled were dry (most Native American reservations don't permit alcohol). But, being home...I'm looking forward to being in a "wet" county.
Just shared a really interesting Brett Saison from Crooked Stave called Wild Sage. My brewing partner just brought it back from his trip to Colorado.
Frothy white head brings forth a melange of sage, citrus whispers, and milled grain. A hint of rye or pepper slips in as well. The taste is bright, fluffy, and full of life. Sage, lemongrass, slight sour that starts off and then quickly recedes. Finish comes back to the sage and the ever-so-subtly present lemongrass. This is quite the beautiful drink.

A late entry here, since it is pushing 11:00 pm in the Pacific Time Zone. I figured it was worth a shot, since this beer is so new I had to add it to BA earlier tonight.

This past week I've had 3 friends from SoCal come up to the Rose City for a visit. Nice the way that happens sometimes, right? On Tuesday my wife and I took Mishel to the Lompoc Tavern for beers and a bunch of appetizers. "Portland sure seems to enjoy their beer!" observed Mishel. I smiled at her unintentional understatement.

Yesterday I hung out with Jacob, a gent I've known in the SoCal beer scene for...jeez, almost a decade at this point. We plotted a generally westward course for beer (Bailey's Taproom and Bailey's Upper Lip), coffee (Courier Coffee), ice cream (Coava Cold Brew Coffee soft ice cream from WizBangBar at Pine Street Market), dinner (Common Row and Marukin Ramen, again at Pine Street Market), and more beer across the river at Hair of the Dog.

Which brings me to my 3rd friend, who brought me my entry for this edition of New Beer Sunday. Today I met my buddy Sean at the Upright Brewing tasting room, and he brought me some Los Angeles beers as thanks for some of the Oregon brews I've sent his way. One of the things he gave me was a crowler of Unpresidential NE IPA from Mumford Brewing. This version was called Batch #3: Impeachment.

When I popped open the crowler, an amazing smell of peaches and grapefruit wafted up to me. The beer is a hazy yellow-orange, murky but not quite opaque. The smell and taste is peach juice cut with sweet ruby red grapefruit juice. The grapefruit pith finish might be more bitter than most examples of the NE IPA style, but that's just the way we do IPAs on the west coast. I'm okay with that. I am definitely becoming a fan of this style, but it just seems to me that a Northeast IPA works so much better when it finishes with a West Coast level of bitterness.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Well, I was going to drink and properly review Iron Goat's Mosaic IPA after dinner, but 44oz of beer is enough for me today, so that will get a reprieve until tomorrow. I'll toss a recap of it into next week's NBS, along with any other new beers I might stumble across during the week.
Speaking of the coming week, have a great one!

Monday morning used to be a time I'd always dread when I needed to get up for work with all week still ahead. Now it starts my five day weekend and I'm hardly blue, except to close this thread right now, as every week I do. Cheers to fellow NBSers, so many great recommendations, the one got me drooling sloppiest, though, was Allagash Golden Sour. Not only because of the delicious description donated to us by @SABERG , but I saw a few bottles two weeks ago in a semi-nearby store. Let's all go get some new beers for next week, what say? See ya then. Cheers!
