I have done this blind on a number of occasions- comparing the decanted first half to the undecanted second half. The decanted part is almost always clearly better, and the one time it wasn't it was a wash. That one didn't have yeast, is my guess.

NBS offering #1 for today is Orbital Elevator from Burlington Beer Company. It's a DIPA with Oats.

    Orbital Elevator

    Burlington Beer Co.
American Double / Imperial IPA / 8.30% ABV

    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

L- The beer pours a hazy orange with a thick 1 finger off white head. Lacing is light as the head reduces to a thick ring.
S-The nose is mostly grapefruit with a bit of orange in the backround.
T- I get mostly grapefruit on the palate. The finish is a mix of pithy bitterness with an astrigency I associate with Oats in the malt bill of pale brews.
F- Carbonation is medium low and prickly. The mouthfeel is medium, but the oats don't really seem to add much to the whole here. I've had plenty of beers who equal the smoothness of the mouthfeel without adding oats to the bill.
O- The beer is certainly drinkable, but doesn't do much to make itself stand out in an already overcrowded Vermont DIPA scene. I'm also not sure the Oats are doing much for this beer. If you like grapefruit, this beer will be right in your comfort zone.

Happy NBS on a warm and humid...au...tumn...day... in... Wisconsin? :astonished:

Following @JackHorzempa I am enjoying a High Road that @larryi86 sent to me for BIF #4.

High Road is a cloudy light golden orange color with a 2 finger foamy eggshell white head. Fades into a ring with an abundance of lacing on the glass. The scent is lovely citrus and passion fruit, peaches, pineapples and mangoes. The hop combination gives an incredible juicy fruitiness to it. Absolutely fantastic topical fruits in the taste is more of the same citrus and passion fruit, peaches, pineapples and mangoes. A hint of earthiness, pine bitter, and malt in the finish. Excellent carbonation with oily hop residue and dry finish. A rather outstanding IIPA.

    I am in.

I like to beat the rush.

I think LOCAL(ish) is key for BIF, as are defined min/max ounce parameters.

Good morning to all the NBS followers from high up on my hill here in central NH. Thanks to Dave for the great send off as usual. As a participant in this round of the NBS BIF I can only say the quality of great beers that have been shared to this point has been exceptional. I look forward to the upcoming rounds and will do my part to keep the ninjas busy during the down time between rounds.
I've been busy this morning as I have been cooking in the kitchen making the pasta sauce from the recipe listed in the last issue of BA Magazine. I will make the pasta itself later this afternoon. I can only say the sauce is way over the top as anything that starts with a 1/4 cup of duck fat would be.
My first beer for this Sunday is from Deciduous Brewing here in NH. I will be back later with a couple of beers from my BIF box. The beer I have here now is there Albricot a Fruited Lambic.
Poured from a 500ml bottle picked up at the brewery yesterday. This beer pours a slightly hazy golden color. with a thin white head on top. The head disappears as soon as your done pouring.
The nose has hints of lemon and apricot but neither is overpowering a certain tartness can be felt in the nose.
The taste is fruited and tart a great blend of the sweetness of the fruit with the tartness of this style of beer. I don't find the overpowering funk you get in some beers of this style but instead a nice crisp clean taste.
The mouthfeel in spite of how fast the head disappeared is very well carbonated. A nice effervescence is felt throughout the glass.
This is a better than average beer for this style, which Deciduous seems to do very well. I am looking forward to enjoying this again.

Happy NBS once again to you fine people. A tip of the cap to @cavedave for setting the tone with part two of the MWK's reveal. I'm keeping the armed chimp in the box for my first beer and opening something I scored in Michigan on Friday. I've seen it posted quite a bit and being a fan of the style, I had to try it.

My first offering today is a twelve ounce bottle of Sunday Mole Stout by famed Weyerbacher Brewing. It has a bottle date of 09/15/16 with a healthy 11.3% abv. printed on the label. Let's give this a pour in the trusty Weyerbacher tulip for today's festivities.

An aggressive pour produces oily black liquid and a thick finger of mocha colored foam that disappears rather quickly. A thin ring of foam is left behind and tiny nucleation bubbles float to the surface. The smell is dark roast coffee, bakers chocolate, a dash of cinnamon and green chili's. Taste is bakers chocolate, coffee, green earthy vegetables and some wet cardboard in the finish. The feel is medium thick and oily with substantial, but not overpowering pepper heat.

A good beer to sip on a rainy and damp morning! It's very similar to Sunday Morning albeit with a slightly odd vegetal flavor. I'm guessing the peppers as there is considerable heat in this beer which kind of tramples some flavor, noticeably the cinnamon. I'm good with the four pack I purchased, but I'll stick with Bomb and better yet Xocoveza for the style. My score is 3.81 / rDev -8.0%.

Time to park it in my favorite chair down in the cave and watch another putrid Bears game. Have yourself a great day and I'll probably let the chimp out for another later! Here's the official scorecard...

Being Cleveland beer week I'm trying to drink mostly local beer. But the week celebrates brews from all over and the event I attended Friday night included a release of Prairie beers not often seen in this market
    [IMG]
This one got straight 4s from me. Definitely a well made, tasty beer and a style I love. 4.0 is a bit below its average- I enjoyed it but it didn't quite have the complexity I've found in others in the same style. Full notes:
500mL bottle poured into a Teku glass
A: Light orange overall but a hazy white hue permeats
    S: Sour, bready, lemon, grapefruit
T: Citrus (grapefruit/lemon), sourdough bread, a bit of vinegar or sour grapes
M: Medium-bodied, some wheat dough but mostly sour (in a good mouthwatering way)
O: An enjoyable wild ale, tasty just not overly funky/complex
    Cheers!

    New Wheatwine Sunday

    Founders Sweet Repute

Happy Sunday, BAs. This discontinued brew, aged in both bourbon and bourbon maple syrup barrels, comes from none other than @foundersasap as part of the MWK NBS BIF.

Sweet Repute pours a vibrant peach-tinted, dark orange color with a half finger of off-white head that leaves modest lacing. Does the appearance impact the taste? I think so. I'm getting a hint of apricot in the aroma, and I reckon that's based on the color as much as anything really in there.

It has a big bourbon aroma, with a hint of maple, anise, vanilla, herbal hops and overripe fruit (apricots? who knows?).

It's similar tasting up front, but even bigger, with a vanilla-bourbon-French-toast thing going, along with a pepperiness and herbal bitterness cutting through the sweetness and a very hot backend. The vanilla in this is just superb.

Lush, creamy mouthfeel, too, that's top notch.

Nice dessert flavors in this one without being overly sweet at all. This is a fantastic beer. Thank you, fasp, for the opportunity to try it.

    Go Eagles.

Maybe I'm completely unobservant but could the BIF signup be more promoted in the future? I read the posts in the last one and really hoped to participate in the next yet apparently here it is and I didn't even know it was occuring! Looking forward to spring... Despite my ribbon I don't frequent the trading forum and looking back could only find one week it was mentioned on NBS. TIA! I'm marking February on my calendar now per @beertunes

Well if you want to see the box I received from @beertunes stop on by and check this out:
Part1, Part 2, and Part 3!!! That box is just plain crazy.

So today's entry is from that box, of course!

Kulshan Brewing Co. Bastard Kat India Pale Ale
Poured from a 12 oz. can in to a Skit to Sea shaker pint glass.
    Best by 11/28/16. 6.66% abv

Appearance: Crystal clear filtered golden orange body with about a full finger's worth of head. This one's leaving a ton of lacing in the glass! It's like a bride's wedding veil.

Aroma: Plenty of hops! Pine, citrus and some tropical fruits: pineapple and papaya. Definitely has a malt presence too.

Taste: Plenty of that hop presence up front, followed by a smooth malt finish. Really balanced. Easy to drink. Love Centennial hops and you can tell this has plenty of them along with Cascade and Apollo. Love it when the can, or bottle, lists the ingredients and all the pertinent information.

Mouthfeel: Light mouthfeel, decent amount of carbonation that helps with that bitterness.

Overall: I loved this beer! Could easily sit back and drink a few of these on a Sunday while watching football!

Thanks again Terry! Definitely gonna be back soon with another NBS entry from that box!

Glad to be home after a killer weekend of work, getting too old for this I sadly need to admit. Also have to admit that despite the dirt and hard and dangerous aspects I really love working with recyclable materials and will be sad to retire, but that day is a'coming and is largely out of my control.

A few more chores to do here at the homestead, and I will be back to join y'all. See ya in a bit..

Good afternoon NBS, time for more beer from @richj1970. First up Orpheus Lyric Ale, a really nice Saison, didn't smell tart but has a pleasant tartness in the taste.

12 oz can poured into a tulip

A- A cloudy golden straw color with a three finger fluffy white head.

S- Light fruit, pears, citrus, peppercorns, some nice Saison yeast, floral.

T- A surprise hint of light fruit tartness/apples, citrus, light fruits, nice malts, floral, hints of peppercorns, just enough yeast.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- A cool looking can with a tasty Saison inside. I did like their Tart Plum Saison a little more, but is is still a well brewed Saison.

Was really anticipating this one, big fan of the original. This one comes with some hype on the trade boards as well.

Poured murky and yellow. I swear there was a egg shell white head, but it disappeared before I could lift my iPad up.

Smells of lime and lemon, bready, biscuity.

Taste: Tip of the tongue you get that tartness, then the citrus lime smacks you in the face. Almost get a white wine dry finish. As the beer warms up you can really taste the salt on the back end.

This beer is so well made, I can see where the hype comes from. Where was the beer in my life during the summer?! Happy new beer Sunday BA!

Happy Sunday NBS players. A beauty of a fall day here on the island. A slight breeze but sunny and rather warm for mid October but I'll sure take it. I'm not doing to much today aside from knocking back brews and watching football. On a good note, the Jets cannot lose today.

My new beer today is from the NBS BIF # 4, monkeys with knives.I strongly encourage anyone interested in new beer to sign up for the NBS BIF # 5. Do not be intimidated or shy. All the people involved are great ba's and you will get to try so many amazing beers.

The new beer today is Dreadnught, ipa, from three floyds brewing co. The bottle comes courtesy of the great ba known as @newjack . The brew checks in at 9.5% with a 9/6/16 bottle date.

The pour yields a clear amber/orange color. Good clarity and a soft white head. On the nose I get sugary hops with slight malt. The drinking starts off with soft and bitter hops right upfront. A bunch of malt action hits on the flow and finishes slightly bitter. Tons of tropical fruit notes hit my palate with pear, mango, lemon, and orange. Sweet crystal malts add some smoothness. This beer really does a great job of showcasing balance. The mouth feel is moderate. Slightly sticky, and slightly booze but the abv is really nicely contained.

Overall, not my favorite beer that I've had from three floyds but still very good. I do think the 98 ba score is a bit over-rated. I'm really in the low to mid 4's on it.
