L- The beer pours an opaque yellow orange with a 1 and half inch off white head.
N- The nose is a mustiness I associate with wheat beers and a bit of coriander.
T- As a gose goes this one is definitely light on the tartness scale. The wheat aroma in the nose translate here to the palate with that same mustiness. The salt touch is light on the finish and well done. Coriander is also thankfully light.
F- Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, but maybe a bit to full for the style. Carbonation is medium on the initial pour, but feels lighter while drinking.
O- Overall I'd say this is a fairly Safe take on the style. None of the flavors are particularly strong or objectionable, but to a lover of the style it will come off as a bit bland. For balance howerver the beer is a very easy drinker on a hot day and my glass is already empty by the time I'm finishing this review.

But hasn't that always been the way with DFH? Sam does something "gimmicky" that you look at and go, "Seriously? Ok. I'll give it a try, but I probably won't like it." and then...BAM! It's actually a good, or great, beer.
Seaquench Ale is a decent beer, imo and super easy to drink while still coming through with a great flavor profile.

Been a while since I've been able to join NBS so I will gladly do so today. New beer number one is from one of Maines newest breweries, One Eye Open Brewing Company. They started up late in 2016 and somehow slipped under my radar until the other day. Tried out two of their beers last night which were good-very good but not excellent. Trying out their DIPA Six-Four-Three right now.

Pours a nice orangey amber with a two finger head that has nice retention and yields good lacing.

Aroma has citrusy and peachy hops, but theres definitely something off, isovaleric acid or caprylic acid and maybe some diacetyl.

Taste follows the nose, definitely some off flavors. Reminds me of an underattenuated home brew. I think it definitely needed a diacetyl rest that would have got rid of some of the other flavors as well. I think it tastes like an MBC Lunch clone with some issues.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, carb is a little low.

Overall I'm thinking they definitely should have worked on this some more before putting it out. The two I tried from them last night were good but this one totally misses the mark. Will have to stop in to the brewery and try it on draft then let them know whats up.

    Cheers!

New Golden Ale Sunday (Week 649)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY Lovely day, good day to sharpen the scythe and get after the meadow, methinks. First a glass or two of this amazing beer from Funkwerks. Thanks @Wasatch for this treat! Deceit, which label calls a Belgian golden ale, but which is listed in BA database as a tripel, likely since golden ale isn't an actual style. What I call it is delicious, complex different, and refreshing.
Pours a cloudy gold with just enough clarity to give the beer gem like appearance. Five fingers fluffy foam float , filling the glass mouth with thick froth.

Tart and doughy yeast notes mix with sharper ones, some herbal and rooty notes, and combine with crisp grain, overripe peach and apple cider aromas to make a delicious bouquet.

Full and bright flavor that carries more bitter than expected, which combines well with the flavors of the nose, all of which are here a'plenty. It is an herbal and spicy bitter that is there at both ends of the sip. Super complex, highly delicious.

Full bodied, medium carb., highly viscous, killer finish with clean linger that entices next sip.

Hard to call this a tripel, better to use the name on bottle, golden ale, though that isn't a style. Highly recommended for folks who like their beers full of flavor and containing the sharper notes of Belgian-esque brewing.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

God afternoon NBS and thanks for that enlightening start to the day from @cjgiant I always value the quality of the kickoff here at NBS,
Today's offering is from just up the road in Turners Falls, Brick and Feather brewed a delightful farmhouse ale using fresh elderflower and local honey, I really enjoy the delicate feel on the palate, nice profile, very little bite and full of flavor.
Well done by Lawrence and Co.
    Cheers all

Pored from a fresh growlette into the test glass.
A - Golden straw in color, thin cap supported by the tiny spheres rising in random sequence.
S - French farm house ale yeast, floral notes of wild flower and sunshine, Elderflower, for certain, a touch of lily. a hint of tropical hops, with a whiff of pineapple, and orange peel.
T - Sweet malt base starts things off, followed quickly by the slightly funky yeast flavors. Honey, and some lovely botanical.
M - Light to medium in body, the palate starts sweet then quickly dries, there is a delightful ashen quality to the finish. The offering is exquisite in this regard. Gently carbonated, the delicate dance across the palate is delightful
O - A wonderful offering from a talented brewer, the use of local botanicals (Elderflower) and honey on a solid base beer really display a creative flair. Well executed and quite delicious. The yeast adds just the right amount of farmhouse touch. I will be revisiting the brewery in hopes to enjoy this again.

    Well done

Pours up a sturdy and foamy brown head over this black beer. Nose is dominated by pepper, as in like a jalapeno smell. Beyond that, I get chocolate and a bit of vanilla. As a matter of fact, the more it heats up, the more that the chocolate comes out. Taste is immediately a super rich chocolate with a hint of pepper jack cheese, maybe that touch of vanilla creeps in as it seems to assist in creating some sweetness. As it opens up more, so comes a bit more heat, but not in undrinkable amounts. Not bad, but it seems out of balance or something.

Great kickoff and my must read for the week. The only beer in my stock that's new is a BA Ten Fidy, that I'm saving, so I'm just reading today. Hard finding new stuff that I want to risk $12 on a six. Even obscure breweries seem to settle in this price range, must be by mutual consent.

Good afternoon fellow NBS'rs! It's been a hectic 3 weeks and things have finally returned to normal. Bought a new to me beer in anticipation of today. Unfortunately this beer is only good as I was anticipating great especially at the price point. I guess one can't truly win them all....

So after just a few sips of the GF's beer at the Port City brewery yesterday, I will dig in to the two bottles I grabbed for today's thread. But first, I will say I had two new beers at the brewery yesterday, a German Pilsner and a Amora-barrel aged Metro Red. The German Pils was clean and refreshing with a sneaky bitterness. I almost ordered a second, but being a tad time-crunched, I decided to try the Metro Red.

The Metro Red was only in a local distillery's barrel for two weeks along with orange peel. Apparently Amora is a herbal digestif, and the herbs seemed to come out and paired well with or took the place of herbal hops. The red was not too bitter (good for me), and the orange helped it along. I also wanted to order another one of these, but time caught up to us.

So today, Port City's Integral IPA
    [IMG]

I was wondering if this beer might be the brewer's attempt at a juicy IPA - as it has a lineup of well regarded IPAs and Pale Ales (but tame by many palates). After having it, I am not sure, though there is a tropical lean to it. It's not very juicy, though, and ends up leaning to the bitter side.

The nose shows a little more of the tropical notes with some mango and pineapple, but a green skin bitterness as well. The tropical notes are more pineapple and have to sneak in between the lightly grainy opening and more bitter ending. Warmth allows the tart sweetness of the pineapple to come out in a bit more strength that lasts a little longer into the end.

A fine, mostly balanced beer that I would suggest giving a little time to warm and open up. It fits right in with their other pale ales - decent but perhaps a tad tame.

Hello NBS friends and family! I'm feeling a touch under the weather today, but I finally feel up to joining everyone. I picked out a couple of brews yesterday while cleaning out the last beers left over from my move.

This first one is a bit of a cheat for NBS: I had it when it came out, in 2014. It's the Wild Beer Co.'s Evolver IPA, a Brett IPA. I bought two bottles, and aged the other one. So, more than 3 years later, I'm ready to revisit this beer and see if it truly has evolved.

I chose not to change my ratings at all, as I feel the fairest analysis of a beer is when fresh. For the fun of it, I will post my old review and new review side-by-side, with today's experience in italics.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30750/114214/?ba=Roguer#navigation

Beautiful, saison-like appearance: thick and hazy (nearly opaque), orange-gold brew, with a 1 1/2 finger white head. Retention is OK.

No significant changes, although the head is even larger (as expected).

Soft floral, citrus, and tropical notes, wheat-like pale malt aroma; if there's any hint of Brett, it's very faint.

Sweet and musty, carrying a lot of Brett character now. There is very little on the nose that would imply this was ever an IPA, although there are slightly stale hop and caramel malt notes more in line with an American Barleywine.

Flavor is a blend of the aroma, but with a significant musty Brett presence. Light citrus and peel; pale, biscuity malt; funk and musty Brett, with just a tiny tang of tartness.

Sharp character up front, melding IPA, barleywine, and Brett notes. Slightly "beery" finish. More caramel than when fresh.

Very light and lively feel; extremely drinkable. Refreshing, in fact.

Very lively and carbonated feel. Still very drinkable.

This is a tasty, unique IPA. It's quite balanced, with a bunch of different flavor notes going on. I'm definitely looking to see how this ages.

Age has not hurt this beer at all, and has certainly brought out the Brett. It's still a very interesting beer. I wouldn't reach for it first - fresh or aged - but I'm glad I tried it both ways.

Well, there you have it. I think I'd recommend drinking it fresh, but it was a fun experiment. I'll hopefully be back later with something completely new to me ... and yet still not remotely "new."

    Cheers!

Good day, NBS crew. It has been a heck of a work week out here is Washington, so I have pretty much decided I am going to enjoy today before heading back east tomorrow night. I slept late, woke up, read the first page of post, took a nap...it is still morning here and this is unusual for me, but the beer is Aslan Dawn Patrol, so I am simply followin instructions, right?

Actually yesterday was an OK day too. Stopped in at the plant randomly to check in, but got out to the beach and walked a goid long way. Found out Park Sevices doesnt fool around...had a $99 ticket for unauthorized parking that the ranger was kind enough to void. If I had not gotten to the car at that moment, would have had to pay the ticket. It is $30 for a parking pass...I bought one to say thanks to the ranger, and I will be back. Had a great dinner of Khalua Hawaiin style pork and raw cabbage and FRESH ahi tuna poke over asian slaw that I could eat every day. Gonna be tough eating sushi back east after eating this.

    Anyway...

Aslan Dawn Patrol graces the plastic cup. Pours cloudy brassy color - not soupy like a NE IPA, but not clear west coast. The smell is wonderful...tropical, a promise of sweetness, something a little minty, mildly roasted malt. The taste follows.. Nicely blended flavors of tangerine, more tropical flavors that are coming up papaya or mango to me, definitely sweet, and a nice cushion if roasted malts. Minimal bitterness. Mouth feel is super silky smooth, mildly carbonated which I like. A little sticky too, but not in a bad way. Feeling this will land north of 4.0 on the review. Good choice for morning "juice".

Hopefully back with at least one more.

Another NBS and another beer from Twin Elephant. This one is an American IPA named Engage the Simulator. It's brewed with pale malt, wheat and oats, It clocks in at 7.7 ABV. Citra, Vic Secret and Eldorado hops are used. It's a big dry beer with hints of pear and melon and has a full but soft mouth feel. It's a nice enjoyable beer on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Greetings once again to the NBS faithful! A tip of the cap to @cjgiant for the hosting duties today. We're fortunate to have people like him that care about the community at large on this site by taking the time to do things like this.

It's a sunny and pleasantly warm day along the southern shore with puffy cumulus clouds drifting by. I was up at sunrise taking advantage of a comfy morning low of 60 degrees to get my run in. I've been running in some pretty wicked humid weather lately, so this was very refreshing. Speaking of refreshing, let's move on to today's opener.

I purchased a four pack of Super Juicer double dry hopped IPA from 450 Brewing out of Columbus Indiana at my local store Friday. The plastic carrier has a date sticker of 06/28/17, the abv. on the can states 7.0% and I'm giving it a pour in a 12oz. tulip for the occasion. Let's check it out.....

Pours a murky dark gold producing a copious two fingers of creamy white foam. It slowly settles to a thin layer leaving heavy lacing behind. The smell is fresh clementines, pineapple, mango and grapefruit. Taste is juicy orange and pineapple along with some mango. There's a hint of floral and a kiss of malt in the finish. The feel is creamy smooth but yields to a slight carbonation tingle on the tongue.

I've been rolling the dice on these 450 IPA releases when they occasionally show up at my local store and have not been snake bitten yet. Each experience seems to get better, the price on this one isn't bad at $15.99 and there's no fuss in obtaining them. I'd like to see them arrive in a more timely manner as most seem to be 2-4 weeks old when they land. I realize some of these hold up better than others and may improve from further conditioning, but I'd like that option. This may be the best I've had from them yet and gave it a 4.2. I also had the honor of adding it to the site.

Time to park it in a chair with the Cubs-Brewers game on the patio and hopefully another as I've scored quite a few new goodies lately. Have yourselves a fine day of new beer adventures! Here's the official scorecard.....

My second new beer of the day is another unique option. Here's what the back label says:

I didn't know what to expect with this beer; I was expecting a BSDA, but the low-ish ABV threw me for a loop. Apparently, it's a dark saison brewed with peppercorns. Huh.

Taste and aroma go nearly hand-in-hand: prunes, raisins, brown sugar, licorice, molasses, spice. A melange of yeast and malt, and perhaps a hint of the adjunct. Very drinkable, and quite enjoyable overall.

I wonder how this tastes fresh. I get a bit of a vegetal vibe at times, but for the most part, there's very little in a 5 year old bottle that implies peppercorns.

    3.92/5 rDev +1.3% | Avg: 3.87
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

L-The beer pours clear and golden with a 2 finger bone white head. Lacing is minimal and the head recedes at a decent rate.
S- The nose is light overall with elements of light yeasty funk and an herbal flowery quality which is likely the elderflower.
T- The flowery herbal quality in the nose is the first thing that hits on the palate. Beneath that there are the normal yeasty farm funk flavors of the base saison. At the back end the elderflower rears up again and gives the saison a dry lemony herbal finish.
F- The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, and the carbonation after the initial pour is almost non-existent. The lack of carb really allows the beer to coat the palate. Consequently the elderflower in the finish really drys out the beer on its backend giving it a pleasing finish.
O-The incorporation of the elderflower is well done and gives this beer a very distinctive flavor profile. If you like Elderflower you will like this beer. If you don't like elderflower you would be wise to try a different saison to appease your thirst.

Thanks to the hosts past and present and the regulars like @Squire123 (who by memory seems to get in the first beer review a lot) for making NBS what it is, fun, unique and special.

This nice, cool dry break in the weather has me catching up in my now, way more comfortable shop where today I am trying a Kolsch for the first time.

I would have liked to start with a more proven example of the style but this was a surprise gift from my wife and for more reasons than one there is no way I'm going to procure and drink a different Kolsch before these.

I would call this brilliantly clear.

Having no experience with the style I spent some time reading the BJCP guidelines for Kolsch as I drank it. It seems to fit the bill in a lot of ways but from other reading I get the feeling this is not as light and effervescent as it should be and may lack in the flavor department. Although, I am enjoying these just fine.

    3.84/5 rDev +6.1%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

12 oz. bottle poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours Bright gold and very clear. The two inch white head didn't last long and diminished to a delicate cap with thin bars of lacing that is being generated by a constant stream of bubbles (this didn't stop until the glass was empty). This one looks great and is rather lively in the glass.

Aromas of yeast with white grape and a sweet smelling grainy note make up a nose that is subtle but nice. The taste is light and clean. It starts grainy with a light fruity sweetness, lemon being the one flavor that stands out, and moves to finish that is dry and clean. As with the nose there isn't an abundance coming through but what is there, is nice. The body is on the high side of light. Carbonation is medium to high giving a crispness to an otherwise smooth feel. When it warms I do get a small bit of chalkiness.

This is my first Kolsch so I can't say that this is a good one, it seems a lot like a pilsner to me. That being said, it is very drinkable. Light and refreshing It does seem to be mostly within the guidelines for style.

I will say this is a pretty good beer.

Hope you are all having a great day! Cheers!
