Greeting All from the Great Northwest where the Seahawks posted a big defensive win against the LA Rams. Hence the 12 glass.

Today we have Big Caboose Red Ale, a hold over from a trailer trip to British Columbia this summer. Really a nice malty red ale.

Seasonal here I guess. We didn't get our usual Indian Summer this year. Last month we went from low 90's to low 60's seemingly overnight. So today was sunny but cool.

    Until next time.

    Happy Trails!

    Well Hello Late Night.
I had a few festbiers at the Oktoberfest, but nothing extraordinary.
    So let's get to this.
NBS BIF #6 Mystery Beeeeeeerrrr!!!! From @FlintB
Poured from a heavily duct taped 16 0z can into my beautiful 18th Street tulip (courtesy of @Prager62 .
Ooooh, deep dark amber hued brown leather in color. Sandy head forms a sandy head less than an inch high. This quickly bubbles and retreats to a smatter of the tiniest bubbles ever. But they are almost golden in the light.
Aroma leaps forth with sweet bourbon barrel. Not overpowering but graceful and confident. Me thinks we have an English barleywine or perhaps an Old Ale. I think I need to taste this one. Be back in a bit.

Oops, if you were paying attention to the photos, you might've seen I meant '15.

Anyhow, I wasn't going to have another, but it's a half day for me tomorrow and it's been an epic Sunday so far, I felt the need to share this one with the GF:

Whoa! This one fizzes away like I dropped some Pop Rocks into it, leaving an unfortunate flat near black void. The feel wasn't as flat as it looked, but was fairly muted on the carbonation side.

Double-whoa!! The nutty aspect of this beer is off the charts. Many versions of peanut jump at me. I even get a little hazelnut or cashew, maybe because of the bourbon barrel effect that becomes a tad more distinct as it warms, adding a coconut scent to the beer.

The taste isn't as strong on peanuts, and the base beer does come through early. A sweetened hazelnut coffee up front, the BBA comes in the middle with the coconut. Late and lingering notes have the peanut flavor and a peanut skin bitter aspect.

All in all, I'd think of this as an after dinner drink, leaving some time to enjoy lingering in the nose (assuming you like peanuts).

Yeah I saw that post. I didn't read your notes until I had posted mine, but when I went back it definitely seemed like we were on the same page and picked up similar things.

Now seeing some posts, I've met a few BAs, but sadly the only still active here is @jvgoor3786. My 2nd new beers is Avery's The Nuttiest Professor. Needs some aging IMHO. 3.94 overall

Pours an effervescent ebony with near zero head. No head retention & lacing

S: Chocolate, vanilla, faint peanut smell

T: Follows the nose, along with dryness & bananas up front. Some nice barrel notes mix with peanuts, banana, vanilla & some booziness once this warms. Finishes with a little peanut, some bourbon & a touch of banana

MF: Medium body, minimal carbonation, builds a little once warm, also slickens a bit

Drinks great for the ABV, some booze burns through in the end & makes me think I should have sat on this for a few years

Wow, I found I couldn't get the peanut out of my nose, initially. Turns out the GF agrees more with you, so I must be the odd one (I know, no surprise to those of you with whom I've met up). Weird, but then again, I'm also one who doesn't get the pepper as much as others in many chile stouts. I also didn't get any banana, but having read that, I kinda see it, like a PB and banana sandwich

Well the flavor has a smooth Bourbon kiss but there's a lot more going on. Some caramel notes round out into dates, dried figs, and maybe a nod toward fig jam with a hint of dried apricot. I'm searching now, so I don't know if I'm ACTUALLY tasting it, but maybe a hint of maple syrup. Don't sue me @WesMantooth if I'm wrong...
Mouthfeel is medium, smooth, a tad sticky, and almost no carbonation.

So, I pretty much come to the same conclusion...barleywine. Now I'm not SURE about Bourbon barrel aged, but I suspect as much. And if it IS a BBA barleywine, WOW, what a smooth barrel note. So, @FlintB what is it?

Hey all, my new beer today is Deschutes Brandy Barrel Abyss-

I really enjoyed drinking this a lot and am glad I picked up 2 bottles while it was available. Here's my review-

    4.39/5 rDev +2.8%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Look- pitch black liquid with light brown, frothy, 1 finger head. Spotty lacing

Aroma- lots of dark chocolate, some booze and something mildly tart and plum-like. The fruitiness was very unexpected, but i can only think that maybe that's coming from the Brandy barrels? Not sure, though.

Taste follows the nose very closely, with lots of dark chocolate, some coffee and a roasty bitterness. That fruity and tart plum flavor is also there along with boozy heat throughout the sip. Finishes with lingering bitterness and boozy heat.

    Feel- medium-thick and silky smooth

Overall- Very nice drinking beer with some BIG flavors that the barrel serves to compliment and enhance quite effectively.

Another one from the box @LloydDobler sent me. This one is a long time want and it did not disappoint.

Look: Deep reddish brown with 3/4 inch of thick off-white head.
Smell: Huge coffee smell hits first followed by roasted barley and a subtle bit of chocolate. As it warms it starts to smell like fresh coffee beans.
Taste: Follows the smell with the roasted barley leading the way followed by coffee and a hint of chocolate.
Feel: Maybe a little light for a porter, but not by much. Smooth and silky with just the right amount of carbonation.
Overall: This is an excellent example of a porter and it lived up to expectations.

Thanks for the long time want @LloydDobler

Coming in a little late on this Sunday after a disappointing Tribe game. "Dynamite drop in, Monty!!!" This is the blind beer from @Buck89 awesome box. I actually thought it was home brew when I read it.

Either way, upon opening I smelled to try to guess what style and get the right glassware. Malt on malt on malt popped out of the bottle along with some dried fruit and fig. Thought it was a barleywine so grabbed a snifter. After pouring, similar smell emanated. Although seemed pretty dark to be barleywine? Maybe a stout? Little bit thin, and the fruit and fig on the nose didnt hold on the taste. Smoke came through - which was great as I was grilling some lamb for myself and chicken for the kids. Guessing some kind of smoked stout. Upon reveal it wasnt actually a hombrew but Yazoo Sue! I think the most interesting thing is how little smoke there was on the nose, but plenty on the palate. Especially as it warmed.

Thanks again, @Buck89 this was super fun. About to pour the New Heights Stout. If I'm not too tired I'll stop back and post that. (Extra pick of the lamb chops, just for fun!)

This one is courtesy of @smanson56 in his very generous LIF box from NBS LIF #6.

It is nothing like any beer I've ever had before. It comes off much more like a red wine than a beer. Imagine a carbonated red wine, with a musty sour finish, and a well hidden double digit abv. Very enojable and unique expirience.
