La Vermontoise, a Belgian Saison brewed in collaboration between Belgian brewer Brasserie de Blaugies and American Brewer Hill Farmstead (6% ABV)

Pours a clear pale golden coloration with a huge, fluffy, lasting head and visible carbonation. Smells of doughy malt, hoppy peach and citrus notes, estery fruit notes of green apple and mild spice and straw.

Taste is a good balance of doughy malt, stone fruit/citrus hops and fruity/mildly spicy estery yeast, with notes of peach, grapefruit, slightly tart green apple/pear, lemon peel, grass, straw and mild peppery spice. Finishes quite dry, with a very mild tartness and bitterness and some estery fruit/spice notes and straw lingering in the aftertaste. Effervescent mouthfeel with a medium body and strong carbonation.

This is a little hoppier than I usually prefer my Saisons but still very well balanced, with the hops not drowning out those delicate yeast esters. Actually has a rather nice, zesty citrus character to it that works well with the estery and mildy tart fruit and spice notes. Very nice effervescent, sparkling mouthfeel.

My second new brew of the day (and last, unless I dip into the cellar for some unexpected brews) is another funky saison, this one courtesy of Wicked Weed: La Bonte, a Brett farmhouse ale aged on pears.

(Interesting side note: the BA database refers to this brew as an American Wild Ale, but the Jester King offering as a saison.)

At 5.7%, this one should pack more of a punch than Jester King's 4.5% funky saison.

I never would have made the connection before, but Brett has a similar taste and aroma as pear - only less sweet. Consequently, it gets a little washed out on the nose (and on the palate, to a lesser extent). It's much more sour than I anticipated; certainly, the "blend" with Golden Sour is responsible for that aspect (and is perhaps the reason for the AWA label here).

Between the extra ABV and the sourness, I'm finding this beer more to my liking. Certainly, the JK is a refreshing, light saison, but this WW offering lacks none of the former's complexity and depth, while bringing more to the table.

Poured from a 16oz can dated APR 2019 (must be an enjoy by date) to a nonic.
Gold orange haze body that you can see shadows through, but not much else. No floaties, medium head with reasonable lacing.
Most apricot smelling beer that I can remember. Apricot follows to the tongue sweet in the front, bitter mid mouth, malt balance at the end.
Mouthfeel is a little light for the style, but it seems fine given the flavor.
I don't try many Boston Beer Co. beers, but I thought their NEIPA was pretty good. This is a junior version clocking in at 5.5% and is a very good beer. Especially considering that there is a lot of NE-Style crap out there right now. And, at about $10 a four pack a bargain. Additionally, these guys are big enough to make this very consistently over the long haul. Hopefully it sells enough to stay in the lineup.

New German Bock Sunday (Week 735)
Greetings all you beguilingly blessed bock beneficence believers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Rough days at work for this old hippy, today being the climax of a series of difficult tests of endurance. Can't wait to re-retire (is that a word?) Ugghh. Getting old sucks, but Gramps said it sure beats the alternative, so...

Today's beer is hitting the spot in a variety of wonderful ways. I should stop being surprised at how excellent Industrial Arts is, they quickly are becoming my second favorite American Brewery. Spring Landscape is a Bock. Highest recommendation.
A bit of the lowdown on this beer.

-Wow, haven't been this blown away by a beer in a while, least of all by a bock, but this goes to show what a bock can be. Slight roasty hints join with the grainy honey bread to open the sip. Caramel and rich breadiness with just a touch of yeast to it joins in, and the flavor crests with clean deliciousness accented nicely by a mere touch of herbal bitter. A balanced beast of excellence.

    Complete review is here.

I think today is going to be a long haul day. Crack into a series of brews with thematic or ingredient ties together. Barrels and berries and cherries. What else am I gonna do while cleaning all day??

Garden Path is on the newer end of the spectrum around these parts, and are based up north near my old stomping grounds. This will be my first brew from them, and I'm pretty excited as I like honey, cherries, and barrels, and all of those things are involved here.

Pour is a beautiful bauble of mostly crisp gold with a piling of fuzzy white head. Even as it settles in it still keeps up. Nice lacing too as I drink the glass down.

Nose is primarily a light funk first and foremost. Some rich honey buried a little deeper in, and a light berry juice sweetness that is the closest I find to the cherries. Barrels are likewise faint at best.

Flavour presents a whole another story, however, as the cherries and the barrels end up being the driving force. Earthy/spicy cherry character with no sweetness emanating from that sector linking directly to some earthy funk, which carries to a ribbon of what I can only describe as corrupted honey (the wild/yeasty character meeting the sweet ribbon of the honey), which then bridges to a green oaky character which carries through the finish, where the cherries come back a bit more to bring it full circle. Finish lingers with some hops joining the oak and honey.

Everything transitions incredibly well from one note to another, and they all kind of blend together as it begins to warm. This strikes me as an exceptionally crafted brew. However. This is not my personal favourite expression of oak (think like a big oaky white wine), and that detracts from my own personal enjoyment a little bit. If you like white wine type oak, or sweeter lighter belgians (tripels and the like... not that this tastes anything like a tripel, just that I think that someone who enjoys those expressions will also enjoy this one) I think this could be a knockout winner.

Well, now it's time for me to get some unpacking and cleaning and the like done before I jump in with another one (which will also be from northward, and will feature barrels and cherries). It's my first real day off day since coming back from travelling to the other side of the world and then jumping right into a stretch at work. I slept 16 hours last night to make up for all the lost sleep and need to be productive!!

Cheers all, hope you're enjoying your day and the contents of your glass!!

Prairie Apple Brandy Barrel Noir, 12% ABV. Pours black with the typical Prairie ring of brown bubbles. Nose is apple brandy, taste follows and as it reaches 55 degrees F the chocolate shows up. Excellent mouthfeel, though a touch watery, still overall outstanding.

No picture today. I tried Moab Brewery Scotch Ale today. The beer lacked serious harmony, balance, depth, and character. The beer is close to the scotch ale style.

The beer is 45 degrees and served in tulip glass. The pour on the beer produced frothy two-finger ivory head. The head retention is excellent and left lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is SRM 16 medium amber with rusty brown hues. The beer has clarity when put up to a light source. The appearance of the Scottish ale is excellent for this style.

The aromas of the beer are toasty malts, butterscotch, subtle malt sugar, bready, caramel, a touch of oranges, earthy, and a bit of fruitiness.

The taste of the beer is toasty malts, butterscotch, caramel, oranges, grainy, malt sugar, earthy, and floral.

The mouthfeel is dry and creamy.

The body of the beer is medium-plus, medium carbonation, and a medium finish.

The beer is just average. The beer does lack depth and character. The beer has this harsh after taste that is unpleasant. The beer borderlines on being unpleasant to drink. This beer lacks balance and harmony. As I continue to consume this beverage, I am agreeing with the 75 percent rating. I want harmony is the beer instead of it being jagged.

My second new bier is a Bavarian lager. This says ABK on the label, but I reviewed it as the Edel Spezialbier from Aktienbraurei Kaufbueren.
This lager is a hazy pale amber with a 2 cm foam cap in this tall pilsener glass. The aroma is of beech and beach grass. The flavor is light and malty with a touch of sweetness and pepper. The finish is not particularly dry. This will be refreshing on a warmer day.

    Synopsis:
Apparently I like this a bit more than @thebeers and @larryi86 . A bit too sweet, but lovely citrus hops. Easy drinking and would work as a summer crusher. A bit of meatiness to these hops, specifically roast pork, which fits this beer perfectly. Medicinal finish drags it down just a bit. Thanks again Arthur!

Scarlet Hibiscus Pale Ale, an American Pale Ale brewed with Roselle hibiscus, orange peel and nutmeg in collaboration between German brewer Stone Berlin and Italian Brewer Birrifico Lambrate (6.2% ABV). This is the first brew in Stone Berlin's 2019 "Uniqcan" series, which often features experimental collaboration brews like this one.

Pours a cloudy, orange'ish deep amber coloration with a large, foamy head and floaters galore, making the glass look like a snowglobe. Smell is totally dominated by the hibiscus, but in a really nice way, with some grapefruit coming through as well as just a hint of nutmeg.

Taste follows the nose, being dominated by flowery hibiscus and zesty citrus fruit: grapefruit, orange peel, with the hibiscus standing out particularly and just a hint of biscuity malt and nutmeg coming through as well. Finishes with a light tartness and bitterness and some hibiscus and citrus notes lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Wow, this is certainly different, but in a really nice way in my opinion. There is a great balance of flowery/herbal hibiscus, zesty/juicy citrus and earthy/spicy nutmeg, with a certain tangy edge, going on here that actually works out quite well, giving this a rather unique, but very enjoyable and refreshing flavor profile.

L-The beer pours a deep plum color with a small one and one quarter inch off white head. The head recedes to a thin central island without leaving much in the way of lace.
S- The nose is all dark stone fruit with a undertone of mustiness from the yeast. Overall it's of moderate intensity.
T- The palate is dominated by the malt. There is some candi sugar sweetness, yeastiness, and dark fruit all intermingling over the top.
F- Mouthfeel overall is medium with a light prickliness from the carbonation. A little thin for my tastes.
O- A solid domestic example of a Belgian dubbel. Worth a purchase if the mood strikes you and you don't want to shell out for the imports.

    Don de dieu by unibroue
    ....cloudy orange gold color
...plenty of champagne like carbonation with around a medium body. For some reason most items from unibroue always feel like the body is denser and heavier than it really is to me
...aroma is candy/sugar,malt,yeast,spice, fresh cut pear and apple
...taste is really nice with it being sweet but not cloying. It has a dry element which seems tied to the apple and pear taste and finish. There's spice but cant adequately describe which type
...overall it's another winner from unibroue which seems to make really high quality beer that I always enjoy [IMG]

Happy Sunday NBS players. A sunny day, with overcast skies coming in, here on the island and the look of spring temperatures on the way. A rare busy weekend for myself and I have barely had time for a beer. Taxes here are all done. Thankfully, my property taxes are on the low side for the area. The new tax laws are going to really negatively effect a lot of long island homeowners.

My new beer today is Thinking Hard About The Weather, a cocoa porter, from Singlecut brewing. The brew checks in at 5.4% abv, and I can't seem to make out the bottle date. 2/22 something.

A black color on the pour with a big and frothy brown head foam. I'm mostly just getting malts on the nose. The drinking hits with lots of chocolate malt upfront, a smooth flow, and a rather bitter and finish. Nicely robust and even a bit hoppy for the style. Lots of cocoa powder, with additional notes of smoke, burnt toast, cola, and subtle coffee. A light/moderate body that holds up rather well despite its low abv. Its not overly sweet but drinks rather dry with good lingering flavors.

Overall, nothing crazy here but its a decent and easy drinking beer. I'm mostly in the high 3's,

Alright, my last for the day. Another brown ale.
Beer: Bolo Coconut Brown (aged on cocoa beans)
Brewery: Burial Beer Co. (Asheville, NC) (think I got the state right this time)
    ABV: 5.6%
    [IMG]
Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a whiskey tumbler glass, this beer pours out a dark brown with deep wood like highlights. It forms a finger worth of khaki colored crown, that is well packed but doesn’t hold for more than a minute or two before turning to a huge island of light mist. 4

The nose carries chocolate to the front, with a brown sugar sweetness behind it. Quick hints of almost a peanut butter coffee. At this point, I wouldn’t know or guess of any coconut. A tad underwhelming. 3.5

The taste follows the life of the nose and brings that sweet, milky chocolate to the front again. Brown sugar, fudge, coffee and cream notes while the coconut is like the wall flower of the party, unnoticed and not contributing. 3.75

The mouthfeel is creamy but also has a mild coffee like bitterness that leads to a slightly sharp finish. A solid body for a brown ale, but with the amount of chocolate and fudge flavors coming through, it almost feels too light for the company. 3.5

Overall, it’s not bad by any means, however, I do wish the coconut would’ve shown up more as it is stated a “coconut brown”. I also feel like it could have some smoother edges, especially with the additives in there, since you know they’re lending some help. 3.5

    Cheers NBS!

Happy Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. I appreciate Craig's introduction but I won't share my thoughts on taxes; I'm much rather discuss beer.

Yesterday, Equilibrium Brewing released a couple of new DIPAs and a special BA Imperial Stout called Vanilla Gorilla. It's named for the brewer's beloved cat. This was a very limited release; only 1 bottle per customer. While I thought about cellaring it for a couple of months I was too excited so I opened it today. It's sublime! While the bourbon is strong, the chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and oak are more than equal to the challenge. There are also notes of brown sugar, tobacco, and earthy char. The feel is rich and creamy and I think it drinks above the 12% ABV. Vanilla Gorilla the cat apparently had "stunning" blue eyes and Equilibrium released this commemorative glass that also sold out yesterday. I really wish I could have bought a second bottle to age but I'm nonetheless happy to have tried this exquisite stout. Here's my full review:

    4.57/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Reviewed on the day after bottle release. Served at room temperature consistent with the brewery's suggestion. Poured into a commemorative tulip glass. It pours as black as night. There was quite a bit of effervescence as the bottle opened and the bubbly, light mocha-colored head disappeared within seconds, which is disappointing. The nose is bourbon heavy along with vanilla, burnt coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, oak, tobacco smoke, and char. It's a fragrant pour. Wow, is it flavorful! The bourbon up front blends seamlessly into roasted malt, rich dark chocolate, and strong black coffee. There are also notes of vanilla, oak, brown sugar, burnt peat. As the various flavors melt away there is another dose of bourbon at the finish. I think the taste improves as it settles in the glass. This stout is rich and viscous in mouth feel. Despite the initial effervescence it's moderately carbonated and because of the prevalence of bourbon it seems boozier than the advertised 12% ABV. Sip this on at your leisure. Overall, it's a superb BA Imperial Stout with tremendous flavor and a delightful mouth feel. According to the label this Stout is dedicated to the brewer's beloved cat; and it certainly is a loving testimonial.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today. Cheers, everyone!
