    Hey there, new beer lovers...

Honeyed amber pour results in a dark mahogany-colored beer in the glass, though some light behind it revealed a clear ruby brown translucence; center-pour produced a thick finger of tan foam that persisted to the end as a fine partial sheet across the surface...

Great treatment of a great beer - has the chewy shellacky malts and bitter hops of the classic barleywine, Bigfoot, layered with bourbon and wood airs... Resin and molasses sweetness upfront followed by a drier and more taut finish... As the beer crosses the palate it presents impressions of dark orange peel, bitter cherry, and fleshier tropical notes - all shellacked with resin, tacky and sticky... The barrel woods and bourbon infuse some vanilla caramel and dry oak into the body, and the beer does not finish too sweet, which I appreciated... Medium-full-bodied, modest carbonation, mildly sweet up front, moderately bitter for the most part, lightens on the finish...

Here's to that new beer in your glass, cheers...

Mrs. Z and I had a fun day yesterday walking around the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. She took lots of pictures of Victorian architecture, and kids/dogs/modern day hippies lounging in the parks. Many fun (for her) stores to shop. I found a bar with Pliny on tap. We will likely return...

Today’s new beer is Firestone Walker’s “Double DBL” (2013) Batch 2, listed as a Strong Ale- American, or an English Barleywine Style. Barrel aged in Elijah Craig and in Four Roses barrels. Brewed with English caramel malt. I got this bottle at the Paso Robles brewery last month:

Pours at 56 degrees a deep amber/coppery color with excellent clarity; off white mixed bubbles; ok cap retention leaves solid ring; spotty lacing, medium legs on swirl. 4.5

Sweet caramel malt nose with a hint of bourbon; some alcohol on the exhale. 4.25

Taste is sweet caramel and toffee up front; vanilla, oak and a little bourbon middle; sweet caramel and raisins finish. 4.5

Moderate minus carbonation; smooth medium plus body; some warmth from 12%; very lite dry tongue coating. 4.25

Overall, really smooth and easy drinking beer; nicely balanced, subtle notes of sweet malt and barrel; I wish it had more bourbon presence; still a fantastic Barleywine Style which is drinking mellow after almost 6 years. 4.5

Have a great Sunday, and Cheers!

I'm fully onboard with the praise for this. Looks great with decent head and lacing for this ABV. Maple and smoky aromas knock you over. Delicious maple, bacon, bourbon coffee blend without being too sweet. No alcohol burn on the nose or tongue. Flavors develop with warming with fruity and brown sugar notes.
Sweet mysteries of beer retail: this showed up on the discount rack at Green's.

Poured from a bottle with date (best by) 04/4/20 into the test glass
A - Slightly hazed goldenrod color, Gentle carbonation meanders toward the surface. Initial pour yielded a 1/2" loose froth of white. Thin ring of tight white clings to the glass interior during the remaining experience.
S - Grainy, some honey notes, hint of blueberry, some apple skin and orchard in bloom. French farmhouse yeast.
T - Warm sourdough spread with orange blossom honey. some lemon zest, apricot and more earthy grains, with a kiss of funk.
M - A bit slick, sweet start never relents, carbonation cannot clean things up. Linger is forever, with honey drop candy as the calling card.
O - A very good Biere de Miel, base is solid and can hold up to the sweetness, enough graininess to keep things rich. The bottle conditioning is all but perfect.

Good late morning here, NBS, as we watch the women’s soccer team take a lead on a penalty kick. Saw this beer in the store and recognized the name more for the glass some of you guys/gals own than the beer itself.

The ingredient list is interesting and this July, 2018 batch has had a year’s worth of travels before getting into my body, Jester King’s Snörkel.

In my review, I noted that this beer came across with more of a sour component initially. As it warmed, the more sour lime became more tart apple and yogurt tang. The smoked salt split up, with a waft of smoke in the nose, while the salt hid until I started sipping. In between these accents, a refreshing, light, slightly earthy farmhouse ale was a tasty treat for both the GF and I. I am a pretty big fan of Jester King, so no surprise I was a little above the average with my rating.

    Southern tier nitro s'more
    .. solid black with a tan,brown head
..above average body, has a slick creamy feel about it. Carbonation is light but a hair higher than most stouts
..aroma is s'mores ,Graham cracker, chocolate, vanilla, and some base of roasted malt and coffee
.. taste is almost identical to aroma with the Graham cracker being strongest. It really tastes like a s'more fell into my stout. Not sickly sweet, just enough so that it comes off like a really nice dessert beer.
...its a novelty beer but at least one made to very high standards [IMG]bank of ozarks near me

    Jack’s Abby - Kellerbier Series - Gold & Grain

Any JA Kellerbier series beers are pretty much a must-try for me at the moment. This one is their “bitter spelt lager.” ABV is 5.4. IBUs are 35. It’s a hazy deep gold (I’m being biased with my word choice due to the beer name.) Head is weak. Feel is a touch too prickly. Taste is grain (there’s that name bias again), honey (but not sweet), lemon (but just a hint), and some hop bitterness (but not as much as expected given the terms on the can). This was enjoyable but the first impression of it isn’t making it a favorite in the series.

Mildly hazy, golden yellow body topped with a thick, sudsy head; fingers of lacing cling to the glass. Fruity aroma; citrus; grapefruit and melon rind. Strong grapefruit tang with the flavor; bold hop bitterness; doughy, grainy flavor in the background. Medium body; acidic with associated dryness; soft prickliness on the tongue.

This beer was packaged 05/29/19. The can states that rolled oats are part of the ingredients yet other than some mild grain taste, there is little soft mouthfeel like one might expect from the oats. The beer is tasty enough but doesn't really stand out from so many other hazy IPAs.

Looks like a typical Sunday for me: 'Fortress of Solitude', brass/ammo prepping/loading, tuneage, "The Thomas Jefferson Hour" on the radio, watching birds and weather through my 'Window to Reality' (an integral feature of the 'Fortress'), and probably a stogie or two.

Mrs. Goot and our friend Peggy from Louisiana are going to head downtown for art adventures while I dog sit Rocket the Wonder Dog and Peggy's dogs Betsy and Annie. I can think of no better scenario for me as I pursue (indulge) in the manly arts this fine New Beer Sunday...

Thanks for another great start to NBS. Living in New Brunswick, I’ve spent many long weekends in Maine and other parts of New England. We were practically neighbours! What a great part of the country, but I can also understand the desire to live in a warmer climate.

Up for me today is Konig Pilsener. As a great fan of lagers generally, I was enthused to see this one pop up in our government monopoly liquor stores. Pouring a bright pale gold with a billowing head, it settled down to a thin cap which provided nice lacing. A somewhat sweet grassy aroma presented itself and the taste was hoppy/grassy with a crisp finish. As a fan of Bitburger, I’d be hard pressed to pick a winner between the two, as both deliver on the style of German Pilsner very well. A great hot weather beer that will be a staple in my fridge until it randomly disappears from store shelves at some point in the next couple of months. Cheers to a quiet Sunday!

    Hey what's going on!?

CAMPEONES!!! that's what! Just been enjoying the World Cup festivities.. and so happy for the big win today!

In the mean time... always beer!

Made a trip out to DC Brau last weekend, way overdue. In fact it looks like I missed @Jason by a day, as he dropped by as well the day after.

With that said, a very happy fridge of late.. but man more muggy DC Summer days no surprise... it is Summer after all in the area.

What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Real nice clear and beaming bronze shiny body color. Slightly soapy white head, but settles to a nice big thick soapy cling of lacing and very chunky collar.

Very delicious hop aromatics. Juiced touches of pine and orange citrus character. Thick reaching earth but pulls back away from dank or real thick muddy tones to let some of the fruit quality shine. Hits a possible amount of mango hiding as well.

Palate takes a more straightforward approach. Basic flavor balance of malt and hop with an angle that goes to a touch of bitter apricot possibly, but with reaching earthy and almost dank tones creeping in. Small earthy tones on the finish with a touch of hop oil and faint sweet oils.

Fairly straightforward, and checking notes compared to it's brother, more of a tuned down earth quality. Still a decent IPA, but some things seem to be lost compared to its big brother.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

    Cheers!

As soon as I unwrapped this beer in the box, my mouth started to salivate. Again thanks are due to @strohme2 for this one. It’s Hipster Brunch Stout from Odd Side Ales

Appearance is pitch black and oily with very minimal dark khaki colored head which recedes immediately to form a thin ring with a dense island in the middle. The aroma is ever so inviting, rich maple, bitter chocolate, some coffee, and some smokey baconesque scents to round it out. The maple is not as prevalent in the taste as the nose but does play a role in the sweetness. Some chocolate, mocha, and some smokiness also come in to play. The bitterness of the mocha and chocolate balance out the sweetness of the maple well, however the overall balance swings more to the sweet side. Mouthfeel is fuller than medium, oily, slick, and somewhat drying on the finish. Overall this is an excellent beer, it just feels like it doesn’t come together like it should or like I want it to. Instead of each flavor being distinct, they kind of muddle together and leave you wishing. However I really like the sweet maple presence in this beer and it begins to take over as it warms. Thanks Justin for the chance to try this one, I’ve loved all the Odd Side stouts I’ve had the pleasure to try.

12.7 ounce bottle,(375 ml), capped and caged bottle. Batch 1, bottled 5/1/18.
Pours a slightly hazy (chill haze?) bright orange, finger’s with of head. Ror lacing but a steady stream of light bubbles through the center of the glass.
Nose of tangerines, oak, light funky barnyard.
Taste is bright, acidic, citrus flesh. Can really taste pith as well. Yogurty sourness, oak wood, lime zest, finishes with a pucker. Not too much for this sour noob.
Medium bodied, light carbonation, very nice mouthfeel.
As stated, I’m a beginner when it comes to this style of beer. In this case I like it and could drink this on more frequent occasions. Glad to have tried it.
