My time on Beer Advocate is approaching 5 years. While I mostly spent time on beer ratings and the Great Lakes forum, I branched out to the Beer Talk forum recently and enjoyed my time here. People have great beers presented in the daily and New Beer Sunday threads, gives me ideas and new beers to seek out in the future. I appreciate everyone who participates and especially those who run BA to make this the welcoming place to discuss one of our favorite passions and interests, great beer!

We have an extra hour to drink today thanks to the archaic DST "Fall Behind" weekend. Stout season is in full swing here in Chicago, and many here are excited about FOBAB weekend (Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beer), and the ancillary events held by brewers and bars for this great gathering. There will be over 200 brewers from across the country sampling over 400 pours in various beer and mead categories. I volunteer for this event, and it is a pleasure to host these great brewers, sample beers from across the country, and meet great beer enthusiasts. I encourage you to consider attending if get the chance, you will not be disappointed.

On to the beer. Phase Three's Invisible Wings is my selection today.

    Invisible Wings

This beer was released in mid October from a new brewery, Phase Three in our area. They produce many great IPAs, NEIPAs and we expect some great BA stouts and other pours from the head brewer, based on what he has brewed at previous breweries.

This is an OK DIPA pour which I rated 3.5 overall. This was my least favorite offering of the dozen or so I have tried from this brewer this year. The pour is murky and creamy light orange pour light white head left soapy lacing. The sweet citrus aroma did not match the overly bitter taste. A mild alcohol burn lingered throughout the pour. Slightly dry, the body was medium and creamy, containing solid carbonation throughout the pour. A somewhat bitter aftertaste lingered.

I hope you all enjoy your new beers today, and I look forward to seeing and reading about many great beers while listening to excellent music selections along the way.

I leave you with Pink Floyd.

Happy I CAN Only Tell You That I Am Drinking These New Beers This Sunday of My Own Free Will Before CANother Flashback Begins (Week 767)!
CANgrats from The CANQuest (tm) to @dukeandduke for being chosen as a replacement moderator for this weekly get-together! I'd like to apply, if even just as a guest/fill-in, for future such openings. I am known to be a bit of a wordsmith (he said immodestly).

I am sad to say that I have no immediate plans to visit my beloved CHI, but FOBAB always sounds like a great time.

Today, I wrap up where I left off last Sunday, inna CAN! I kinda overdid it, but I wanted to get as many in that day as possible, although I paid for it on Monday. 8=( I am pulling onto the on-ramp even as I am typing this & I plan to merge onto the expressway, beginning with:

Good day New BSers! Thanks, @dukeandduke, for starting today's NBS thread. I hadn't realized it was host change time already.
Naturally, since I raked and burned leaves until dark yesterday, it began raining shortly after I quit, dousing my fire and leaving a pile of wet leaves to eventually dry out and blow back into the yard. Since most of the leaves come from my neighbor's oak located about five feet from the property line, I'll be seeing many more falling. Seems fair that the smoke from my burning of his leaves mostly blows toward his house. After yesterday's workout, I enjoyed a hot shower and a cold Rumpkin.

This morning's New Breakfast Beer is a break form the Costco advent beer pack I'm working my way through:

$ 17.00 (Including tax)/750 mL cork & cage bottle ($0.669/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Reviewed 11/03/19.
Undated bottle other than “2019” on banner. Stored on the shelf at the store, stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Light amber, clear.
    Body – Medium amber, clear.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.9 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density with rocks, short duration, diminishing to a seven to eighteen mm “choppy seas” crown fed by weak effervescence, with a thin partial cap.
Lacing – poor. A few large irregular islands of tiny to small bubbles remain hanging on the walls of the snifter.
Aroma – 3 - Weak. Medicinal herbs, some orange zest, very faint star anise.
Flavor – 3 - Begins very herbal and medicinal. Ends slightly bitter and dry, with a weedy aftertaste. No alcohol (8.5 % ABV) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Weak esophageal warming occurs, eventually leading to a gastric glow. Subsequent belches produce a bit of licorice.
Palate – 3.5 – Full, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3. The Jagermeister has totally destroyed the flavor and nose of Arrogant Bastard, turning it from a strong ale into a sissified health tonic, priced like a prescription drug. This would be better named “Errant Bastard”.
    Rating 3.08, rDev -18.5%.

This should be a drain pour but I'm a cheap bastard. Besides, I always finish my prescriptions.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

So happy I no longer work on Sunday, and get to enjoy a day off. That's what I'm going to be doing today - I'll be hanging out with a friend and enjoying some good beers and food. I have no idea if the beers will be new, but if they are, I'll be back later.

But now for the first new beer of the day, and a good one to start the day with.

    Coffee Eugene from revolution Brewing

This beer was kindly sent to me by @FFFjunkie .

I've seen Revolution beers when I cross over the St. Croix into Wisconsin, and I know I've had a few, but never this one.

I'm digging the flavor, and will talk about it more in my review.

Pours pitch black. 2 finger tan head. Head retention is amazing. Some lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose is, a sweet coffee aroma.
Taste - A nice smooth coffee flavor mixed in with a malty sweetness. Bit of caramel also coming across to me.
The body is decent. Smooth feeling.
    A solid beer overall.

I'll be back for some more later. See you all then.

    Belated Happy Halloween everybody!

My wife is a BIG fan of a beer blend of a Pumpkin Beer and chocolaty Stout which she calls a Chocolate Pumpkin. This is an annual treat for drinking at Halloween time.

The choices of Pumpkin Beers this year has been quite limited and as of a couple of weeks ago not too many brands at my local beer retailers. For folks who are not fans of Pumpkin Beers this may be viewed as being a good thing. I was lucky to find a 4-pack of a Pumpkin Beer from Manayunk Brewing branded as Yunkin’ Pumpkin which I have never had before. On the can it listed: “Pumpkin Ale with Spices”. What you want for this blend is a Pumpkin Beer with prominent spice levels since this aspect will get diluted via the blending process.

Below are some details about Yunkin’ Pumpkin from the brewery’s website:

“Brewed with real pumpkin, this seasonal favorite is the one true indication that fall has arrived. The aroma of nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and clove jump out of the glass creating an experience much like eating a slice of pumpkin pie on a brisk autumn afternoon.

    ABV: 5.5% IBUs: 17

    AVAILABILITY: 12 oz Can, Draft

    MALT: 2-Row, C-30, C-40

    HOPS: Summit

    SRM: 7 | OG: 14 Plato”

    https://www.manayunkbrewery.com/news-item/back-flip-seasonal-copy/

The ‘standard’ choice for the chocolaty Stout is Young’s Double Chocolate Stout which luckily my local Retail Beer Distributor had in stock. On the bottle it lists: “Dark beer brewed with real chocolate and natural chocolate flavor added”. Other Stouts that have a notable chocolate flavor to them can be used for the blend but IMO Young’s Double Chocolate Stout is the optimum choice here.

The process to make a Chocolate Pumpkin:

Step 1 is to pour the Pumpkin Beer in the glass(es) first:

Step 2 is to then pour the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. I prefer to perform a vigorous pour to encourage mixing. I suppose you could use the back of the spoon method if you prefer to ‘float’ the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout on top of the Pumpkin Beer?

So, how well did the Yunkin’ Pumpkin ‘work’ for this year’s blend? I am very happy to report that it worked very well. This blended beer had a very enjoyable combination of chocolate and pumpkin pie spice flavors.

Cheers to Chocolate Pumpkin blended beers!

I really like that idea. I've made pumpkin bread, and I add dark unsweetened baking chocolate to it.

    It's amazing.

For those who aren't insane as I am, use semi sweet chocolate when making it. You'll be in for a treat.

Good morning! I really appreciated the extra hour of sleep this morning following yesterday’s massive bottle share. This morning’s new beer is a bottle from my Milwaukee buddy, @Number1Framer - Founders’ Mothership Series “Barrel Aged Imperial Stout”, #5 in the series:

Pours inky black at 53 degrees; ruby edge; thick coffee tan/brown head; long cap retention; moderately heavy lace that was clingy all the way down the glass; heavy ring; medium legs. Chocolate, roast malt, cherries nose. Chocolate fudge, cocoa nibs, toffee;charred oak; layers of smokey dark fruits. Smooth rich feel; full body; minimal warmth from 12.8%; lux velvety tongue coating. Overall there is little evidence of alcohol; tasty char and chocolate linger; layers of bittersweet dark chocolate and dark stone fruits open up as liquid warms; simple yet well balanced and one of the best BA stouts I’ve had the pleasure to drink; highly recommend.

Morning, friends! I've been drinking my way through some local offerings recently (inspired no doubt by the NBS BIF ... and also, I've been slacking off my normal pace over the last few months). I've had some pleasant surprises, and as one might guess for hyper local small breweries, my rDev is all over the place - double digit negative and positive.

I think if more BAs tried these beers nation-wide, the overall ratings would likely trend closer to my own. They're neither as bad nor as good as the locals seem to think.

Anyway, this is my first of two beers from Coastal Empire Beer Co., out of Savannah GA. Savannah is well known as a beer stop here in GA (but about double the drive for me as Jax, so I don't head there frequently), but not necessarily for its breweries. I've had one other beer from them so far, a coconut pineapple Gose, and I was pretty impressed, actually (and naturally, -rDev :expressionless:).

    Tybee Island Blonde

Despite being named "Blonde," this is described as a Kölsch-style ale. Kölsch was the style that really got me into beer (courtesy of Reissdorf); it was my introduction to the concept that fizzy yellow beer didn't have to taste bad. Couple that friendly nostalgia with my German heritage, and the fact that Kölsch is a protected name in Europe, and I am widely critical of poor and crazy American takes on the style - often, beers that beer absolutely no resemblance to a Kölsch.

Tybee Island Blonde doesn't start off on the right foot, either. Those pictures aren't misleading due to lighting; it really is a brownish-tinged amber color, far darker than I would expect. It is also slightly hazy.

The nose and palate, however, aren't that far off. Hop flavors are fairly neutral, and aside from some doughy, honey sweetness around the middle third, it's a balanced, crisp brew. A touch oily on the finish, and the aftertaste falls flat, leaning toward cardboard.

Overall, though, it's pleasant and a reasonable take on the style. I would likely order this on draught over mass-produced lagers, but I won't repurchase it for home consumption.

Good morning NBS and hello to @dukeandduke, thanks for the start today.
Are our esteemed colleagues of the last few years stepping away?
Today's offering is from Honest Weight Brewery in Orange MA, They refer to this as Landbier,
A delightful lager that fires on all cylinders, earthy, crisp, excellent malt display, clean finish.
    What else is there?
    From the brewers notes.
"A bit about MILLINGTON. This is our take on the Franconian style of Landbier. 5.4%, Malt forward, bready and infinitely enjoyable. Brewed with Pilsner Malt, Munich and CaraMunich malts, Saaz hops and our Traditional Lager yeast. Fermented cool and naturally carbonated."

    My notes
    Cheers all

Poured from a growler filled yesterday, into the test mug
A - Orange honey color, excellent clarity, a frothy cap of white loose knit resides throughout the entire experience.
S - Earthy grains, some nutty elements, floral hops are grassy and compliment the earthy grain, A yeasty dark bread rising is buried in there as well.
T - Malt and hops interplay is spot on. Lightly toasted dark bread, a bit of Earthy herbal thread. The interplay is quite something, no wandering to far out of bonds.
M - Medium in body, semi sweet start quickly yields to a correcting bitterness, the finish is superbly clean and has a dry buckwheat taste.
O - A very good lager from these very talented brewers, I appreciate the nod to Franconian lager in the description. As a Helles category it is a little darker. Soft water adds complexity, very enjoyable

Happy I CAN Only Tell You That I Am Drinking These New Beers This Sunday of My Own Free Will Before CANother Flashback Begins (Week 767)!
Let's move on to something else, shall we? After all, it is NBS (Week 767), I'm out onna virtual highway, throttle open, wind in my hair & I have multiple vehicles at my disposal today. CANother oddity about me - I do not drive nor have I ever held more than a permit. I am CANmitted to walking, public trans or bumming a ride. As a cop, I was always shotgun. I am trying to get the SDBG MC to get a duty sidecar so that I CAN ride along. I am a gearhead of the first order & am not only fascinated by vintage vehicles of every stripe, but I CAN CANverse endlessly with their owners, much to their glee. Car owners especially like to talk about mods & restorations, but the bikers will light things off to demonstrate their sleds. The kickstart of a panhead is the best! All right. I'm climbing outta my 1968 Dodge Charger Magnum to take the wheel of a 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Fastback. Any familiarity?

More prelude to this next one. Wanna hear about my best Uber ride EVAR? Of course you do since I lead a singular life. Dateline:CHI, June/July 2014. I'm dahn the SaSide, pregaming the CHISOX game (bump the Cubs!) when I glance at my watch & EEEK! it's way later than I thought! I would not have had any CANpunction about walking through the 'hood, but a) I might need to do #1 along the way & b) I wanted to watch the game. Uber, it was. Tom Jefferson in a late-model Charger pops up! 8=O He arrives in a burnt-orange jawnt with the black stripes up the C-Line! 8=O "May I sit up front?" "Hey, man, if yer lookin' to take me off, I got no cash & the vehicle is registered! Sit in back." "Naw, man, nothin' like that. I just really dig the wheels. Dig?" At that point, I beCAN spouting all sorts of stats about his car. Flabbergasted, he replies, "Yo, hop in. I got an idea. You in a hurry?" "Not really, just going to the Sox game & I CAN't imagine it's a sell-out." "Cool, cool. Strap in like you normally would, then take that L to R strap & plug that in, too." 8=O Two turns later & we're on the Dan Ryan! Soon after merging into traffic, he floors it! Now, we're really cooking along. "Say, isn't that the ball park?" "I thought you weren't in a hurry." 8=O "No matter, I gotta get off anyway." Cool as a cucumber as I look back to see a parade of cop cars like the tail of a kite behind us! 8=O We slide onto an off-ramp going 3x the speed limit as he powers back & lands us under an overpass as the pigs stream by overhead! 8=O "Okay, I'm gonna drop you quick, my brother, then lay low in Cabrini Green for a piece. You good?" 8=O "All right, unbuckle, hit it & I'm gone. There may be an APB out." 8=O

Round #2 with Coastal Empire: Southern Delight Praline Amber.

At first, I assumed this was a beer I already had: River Street Praline Brown. I rather liked that one, too. Apparently GA breweries like their praline. :grinning:

This one is quite different, really sticking true to style as a red/amber ale. Grainy and malty, but never sweet. The pecan and vanilla are both noticeable, but not in the way you'd expect if you're used to flavored stouts, porters, and browns. Very lively.

This one is a very nice change of pace. I could see myself occasionally picking up a six pack.

    Hey what's going on?!

Finally some sunny days, and much cooler temps, but definitely are gone the humid hot burning sweaty days of a DC Summer. Great time was had by all yesterday as we had a lovely parade to celebrate the World Series victory!

And with that... Juan Soto has been offered by D.C. Brau... beer... for LIFE.

A good time was had by all. Man is Budweiser milking the Bud Light guy like there is no tomorrow.

With that said, I am happy to be sitting back and taking in the last lazy days before the week starts. Turkey day will soon be around the corner as well.

Luckily I've done a minor beer run, with some new goodies to try out. A recent trip to a Uzbek/Russian market had a bunch of Ukraine/Poland/Baltic/Russian brews which I have dug into, plus I was long overdue for some local market show up brews.

But for now what is new for our hero today?!

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned October 3rd 2019.

Quite a nice looking NEIPA. Has a mix of hazy and turbid, but does not go full on swamp water looking body. Pale lemon yellow, but with some actual clear edges on the side of the glass, showing some very copious amounts of fine carbonation. A standard classic three finger white head hits, with some big swiss cheese like bubbles, and good staying power and retention. Some cascading pill lacing while settling and you have a great looking IPA here.

That hop aroma hits wonderfully. Classic fruity tones of tropical notes and citrus. Zest orange, with hints of earthy pineapple mixed in. Sweet grass and herbs get into the mix too. Hop dominant with a neutral malt and yeast presence, that is inviting and delicious smelling.

Palate gets in the groove. Locking hops of slight melon and much more into the tropical flavors of guava to mango like than the hinted citrus. Malt body is a bit basic, but solid. Aftertaste hits with an excellent balance of fruit punch light sweetness and grass bitter herbs, bordering on a menthol fantastic aftertaste. Misses a little in the malt density and chewy character to put it over the top.

A well suited and another solid beer from these guys who rarely ever disappoints me.

Mouthfeel is pretty light with good carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good porter with coffee, but a great beer for watching a hockey movie. Thanks Dan!

Kyoto White Yuzu Ale by Kizakura. I have actually been to that brewery and even though I did try some of their beers at the time I was there mostly for their sake. I had my first nigori sake there, which blew my mind. Nigori is like the NEIPA of sakes: Hazy, thick and kinda sweetish (I am including a pic below). Kizakura is a great place with great food and lots of cool drinks to sample. I did not try this particular one while I was there so I grabbed one on a recent visit to the Mitsuwa market in Edgewater, NJ (just across from Manhattan). As for the beer itself, it's a spiced fruit beer (the fruit being Yuzu). Not sure what the base beer is. It is fairly light and mildly fruity, with some slight acidity presumably from the Yuzu. Easy to drink and not too complex. It would be a nice pairing with some light Japanese dishes, including fish.
