Only one beer today, but it’s a doozy. My highest rated beer from Stone (this beer is #71) is the base beer. Let’s see how this variant holds up.

Pours a surprisingly hazy tangerine color with a dense, creamy white head that provides decent lacing. The nose is a heaping helping of ripe, juicy tangerine, a nice dollop of pineapple, and a very welcome bready malt note. I am officially salivating.

The juicy tangerine flavor leads the taste, and it is truly and spectacularly delicious, and the pineapple is also juicy and a significant contributor to this beer’s flavor profile, but the star for me is the subtle sweetness from the bready malt, which provides balance and keeps this beer from a trip to Cloyingville.

The mouthfeel is substantial (hello 9% ABV) and on the drier side. This beer is a worthy addition to this iconic series.

New Beer #3 (and probably my last): Peanut Butter Jenkins.

Split with my partner, we have much the same take on it: it needs some rich sweetness, like milk chocolate, to offset the very high bitterness.

The peanut butter is a nice complement, but when I think of an imperial peanut butter stout (11.7% ABV!), I think of a dessert stout - and this isn't that.

All said, it's quite nice, verging on greatness, but with some deeper, rich sweetness, it would have been outstanding. (My partner is likely to not finish hers, as she's just not digging the astringency.)

I tend to either love or hate AHS . . . when it's good it's good, and when it's bad, it's awful. Of the most recent ones, I loved Apocalypse but couldn't get through 1984. (The premiere season and Asylum are probably my all-time faves.)

As for kids watching horror, my partner's niece-in-law, Riley, is now five years old, and by the time she was four she'd seen an unbelievable amount of horror. She's the most well-adjusted, cute kid you've ever seen, but I found myself stunned by the conversations I was having with her re: all of the Conjuring movies and their spin-offs. Totally wild.

Let's do this thing! Got a stout on this hot, hot, hot evening in the Midwest. Not a typical style associated with the summer, but I figured I'd have one beer, and this is the one.

Melvin Eureka, MO's Night Visions Vanilla Latte.

Pours black with three fingers of burly caramel-khaki tan foam. Head retention is good. Aroma is vanilla bean right off the nose. Coffee, chocolate, and roasty and toasty malts form the rest of the nose. It's staccato, hitting quick, then receding. Flavor profile is a little better developed, smoothly transitioning from vanilla bean at the onset to coffee to chocolate. Roasty and toasty malts form an underlying base, with the thickness and sweetness of the flavor profile beefed up by lactose. Together it has a latte-esque flavor profile with support via dark malts. Alcohol is not prevalent in the aroma or flavor profile, despite this being above 10%. Mouth feel is medium-thick falling just a bit shy of full bodied. Consistency is creamy, mimicking a full latte sip. Overall, the label suggests exactly where this beer is headed, and the beer follows that same path - no misnomers here.

The first season of AHS hooked me. I absolutely loved it. I figured the premise would be to continue a dark timeline within that same home, but nope. Anymore, I have a tough time getting thru seasons, having stopped at the Hive Mind season.

Agreed, Asylum was also very well done.

Back with another beer shared with the spouse, and this one is a bit of an oddity.

Allagash Kurkuma. From the brewery notes:

Turmeric, or “kurkuma,” adds a hint of spice to this tropically crisp, Saison-style ale. Brewing with the whole root lends all of the subtle aspects of fresh turmeric — its earthy notes and color — to Kurkuma’s dry and refreshing profile.

    Beer Details:
Grains: 2-Row Malted Barley Blend, Organic Oats
    Hops: Cascade, El Dorado
    Yeast: Saison
    Spices/Other: Organic Turmeric

The beer pours very clear, light yellow gold, with a lively but fairly short-lived white head.

Definitely a saison with yeast notes, very earthy from the turmeric. A bit of spice in general. Mild fruity esters, mildly spicy. Not a powerful smell, but pleasant and well rounded overall.

The taste is pretty typical for a farmhouse ale, faintly Belgian inspired but again not overwhelming. The earthy sense is strong, and on the swallow pepper, clove, phenolics emerge. The spice builds pleasantly and leaves a lingering tingle well after drinking.

Light-bodied, dry, crisp, and refreshing. Spice pepperiness lingers long!. Nicely carbonated for the style.

Liking this beer. It is not as odd as it sounds. I expected a more orange color, maybe, and had no idea what to expect for the taste. It is going to be around a 4 on the score. Enjoyable summer drinker.

My new beer today is Brew 5000 from Fremont. Their annual bourbon barrel-aged barleywine. Was lucky to find a bottle. Loved Brew 3000, so here we go! Poured from fridge temp. Pours very dark brown with little head. Nose is bursting with toffee notes right away. A bit of apple pie, raspberries, chocolate, rich malts, candy sweetness (like walking into a candy store), a hint of black licorice, and a bit of bourbon. The taste...holy crap. The taste blows the nose away. Sweet, but not cloying. Intense and mouth-filling. Toffee, toffee, and toffee. Bourbon notes are there for sure. There are some wood notes, along with intense dark fruit - figs, raspberries, dates. A bit of port, raspberry-cream chocolate, brown sugar, and a definite nutty influence. Hard to pinpoint the nuts, but I'm leaning towards walnuts and maybe cashews. Maple syrup notes are detectable. The mouthfeel is insane. Super viscous and rich. The finish is super long - sweet coating that last minutes. Overall, a wonderful English barleywine aged in bourbon. I would love to taste this without the barrel aging to compare. Cheers!

    Hefeweizen from Germany (5.4%).

Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of doughy malt, spicy esters, with clove really standing out here, and some grassy hops.

Taste is a good balance of doughy malt, spicy and slightly fruity esters and grassy, spicy hops, with notes of clove, black pepper and lighter banana and hints of apple as well. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some spicy clove and black pepper, with hints of banana and apple lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is probably the spiciest Hefeweizen I've ever had, and I can really dig the combination of spicy esters and hops here, while the fruitiness is a bit more subdued, again both from the esters and hops, this being rather grassy and somewhat bitter instead. While the body and mouthfeel seems just a bit lacking here, I can really appreciate that spicy flavor profile and those notes of clove and black pepper, although I would perhaps have wished for a bit better balance with some more fruity notes as well.

Overall, this makes for a rather enjoyable Hefeweizen if you can dig that spicy and somewhat bitter character, which really stands out here.

Have had three new wheat beers since Friday but no cross posting, keeping it unique. I had always overlooked this beer but then @Peach63 reviews it in NBW a few weeks back and @TongoRad also recommended I try it so here we go.

    Zywiec - porter

This beer pours how I always want a dark beer to. Black with a slow rising dense and creamy looking slightly brown head. Some nice lacing as it settles.

The initial smells to me are licorice and Dr Pepper, yes I’m not sure what gives Dr Pepper it’s smell but that’s what this beer gives off. There’s also plenty of bitter roasty chocolate and coffee notes.

The taste leans towards the licorice and chocolate from the aroma. There is also a strong raisin like quality in the after taste of this beer.

Mouthfeel is medium but leaning close full. It has a low carbonation that gives a creamy like mouthfeel. This is followed up by a nice bitter bite on the back end. There isn’t really any heat but you can tell this has some ABV to it.

Overall a very enjoyable dark beer that will definitely find its way into my purchases from time to time. I like that they’re sold as singles and at a good price.

Thick almost flesh colored with a soapy quickly dissipating head, no lacing or cap to speak of.

Taste is sour apple up front that lends to sweet fruit punch like.
Mouthfeel is a sour bite initially and a sticky sweet finish. Medium carbonation and a lingering fruity taste

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Well, I've got a rare weekend, and Saturday, off. What does that mean to me? Well, I had to take a road trip to Dallas... Wisconsin.

Yes, I went to an old favorite of mine - Valkyrie Brewing in Dallas, Wisconsin. I went there with some friends, and we had a great time there. Hint... there will be a new beer that I got there, and have never had before, however, it won't be in this post.

To get to Dallas, there's 2 ways I could go. I could take I 94 to the cities, and then over to Wisconsin, or I could take MN 95 over to Wisconsin.

Well, 94 is a horrid mess of road construction right now, so I took MN95. This route, one that I've never taken before lead me to the beer I'm going to review. On the way back from Dallas, we stopped in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, and at Trap Rock Brewing there, and I got this:

    Devil's Chair - Trap Rock Brewing - Dubbel - 7.0% ABV.

I do like this beer a lot. That being said, I'm really having a tough time putting words to what I'm having here. I just can't describe all the flavors I'm getting in this beer. Is it good? Yes. Do I like it? Yes? would I get it again? Yes.

I know some of you here are a lot better at tasting, and putting into words what you're tasting than I am, so I hope this review is at least decent.

Pours a nice amber color. There's a 1 finger off white head in this beer when poured from the crawler. The head dissipates rapidly, however there's a nice bit of carbonation rising in the glass, bubbling to the surface.
The nose has a bit of an apple aroma. I also get a leather aroma, as well as a bit of an earthy aroma.
Taste - Up front I get a bit of caramel. It then goes to apple. I next get a bit of a wild earthy funk in here, that also gets me a bit of smoke in here. I know there's a lot more going on here, but I can not describe it all.
The body is decent. I do feel the carbonation in my throat.
Very interesting beer overall. So much here, I just wish I could find the words for it all.

I might have the new Valkyrie Brewing beer in a bit. We'll see.

Well, I've done it, and popped into a beer from Valkyrie Brewing I've never had before, and in "proper" glassware:

Velvet Green - Valkyrie Brewing - Dallas, Wisconsin - Irish Dry Stout - 4.6% ABV

I'll start off by saying the water in Dallas is very soft naturally. This is so different from where I live, where the water is super hard straight from the Mississippi. The soft water really is apparent in this beer. It adds a soft and creamy feel to this beer that i like a lot.

I remember 2 years ago, when I was last there, I asked co-owner Randy, if he had ever considered brewing a NEIPA style beer because the water was so soft. He didn't, because he, and his better half Ann, aren't really IPA fans. They do have a couple IPAs, but not in the traditional IPA playbook. Heck, my friend, who went with me today, hates IPAs, but likes theirs.

But, back to this beer. I do like it, and I hope you all like my review. The only other one was from a member who had it when it wasn't kept cold. Their beers are meant to be kept cold because they're unpasteurized.

This beer pours pitch black. The head is 2 finger tan colored. There's a mix of bigger bubbles and smaller ones. The retention is decent, however, there's minimal lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
There's a bit of a malt here, along with a slight roasted malt aroma. If I remember when I go next, I'll ask if the malts for this beer are roasted. There's some chocolate in here as well.
Taste - Sweetness right away that turns dry quickly. There's a hint of chocolate, and a slight creamy flavor.
This beer feels soft as hell, but this is because the water there is super soft. I do get a creamy feel, but it's also very light.
I like this beer. Damn good.

Ok, that's all for tonight. I might be back tomorrow with more.

An even slow pour released a finger of fizzy/soapy white foam with short retention and no lasting lacing.
Hazy yellow-straw body, I can see my fingers through it.

Lemon and orange zest are featured during the smell with wheat bread and ginger snaps. No hops.

Neutral and slightly sour with low bitterness, honey balances the citrus and ginger. Bready malt takes a back seat to citrus juiciness. The finish is fast and dries to almost semi-dry.

Lively carbonation creates a lemon soda kinda feel. Light bodied as expected. Refreshing easy drinker. I like the use of the honey, lemon, orange zest and ginger as stated on the label. If it had coriander I would have assigned it as a Wit Beer.
