Hey! I hope everyone is getting deep into their weekend, I know I am enjoying mine so far.

Here's to another new beer. This one I just couldn't pass up to try.

Poured from the bottle into a branded goblet glass.

Minimal head creation with a simple white one finger appearance and leaves no lacing, and just a simple collar. The body color is a simple opaque and slightly hazed note of light orange to dark lemon yellow.

Interesting aroma. Does hint salty almost gose like, with touches of lemon and lime like qualities. Slightly juiced and fruity herbacious, but also kind of in an odd way. Funny how this seems to be turning out.

Palate is a bit of an odd duck. Quenching and good mouthwatering body, with a simple malt backbone. Mid palate has a bit of odd briney pineapple and fruit like character. Finishes with bright lemon like hop and flavor, but almost gets into some detergent like qualities with some of the bitterness as well.

It's a neat concept but the beer doesn't seem to come off like an IPA, or any kind of specialty beer either. Sort of lacks an identity, and if you told me this was made with salt water taffy I wouldn't have know that's for sure.

    look: 3.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5 | Final Score: 3.61/5

    Cheers!

Good afternoon NBS/NBW and thanks to @ChicagoJ for hosting this weekend.
Lets not talk about the weather,
we were on Skype with #1 couple today, and the baby is about 9 weeks out. So the excitement is growing, A great visit next February is in the works.
Todays offering is from Drowned Lands in Warwick NY. This has the potential to be great,
Wonderful aromatics, texture needs some help, and frankly its about still, so more carbonation is an easy fix.
    Do good
    Stay Cool
    Be well

    Outcrop

    Farmhouse Ale - Saison | 5% ABV

    The Drowned Lands
    Warwick, New York

    3.86/5 rDev +5.5% | Average: 3.66
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Poured from an undated 16 oz. can into the test glass. Served at 48 deg.
A - Lovely golden straw color, very little carbonation, a quick to exit thin cap left no calling card. Nary a ring of evidence during the experience.
S - Mixed culture nose, a bit of citrus, lemon verbena, orange peel, with a bit of honey
T - Those aromatics with a nice peppery grain thread mixed in, but really not much else
M - A bit flabby, if this had excited carbonation that would be game changing, Sweet/tart on the palate, with an abrupt finish. Linger is largely Esters, with some pepper.
O - Such potential with this one, a bit of fine tuning, increased carbonation first and foremost. would really help

Sharing this with my wife. Two thumbs up.
The beer is a red/orange color with a small, rapidly disappearing head.
Aroma of cherry and lime, a little funky.
Taste of tart cherries, lime, lime zest.
    Crisp and dry.

Sawyer Ninja Juice Juicy IPA 6.1%ABV

16oz can poured into a 20oz pint glass.
L: Pours apricot gold with a 1" creamy off white head. Medium carbonation. Very good retention and lacing. Head thins over time.
S: Orange, tangerine, pineapple, light grapefruit.
T: Fresh fruit juices, apricot, tangerine, pineapple, very light pine, light buttered caramel. Not really sweet. Light malt and mild bitterness at the end.
F: Juicy and soft mouthfeel that is hop forward but is by no means assertive. It has a semi-dry medium fast finish.
O: Simply excellent! Juicy, fruity and lightly dry. Very easy drinking. This brew is easy to rate/review and is very very good. Simple, not extreme in any way. A fantastic example of American IPA.

    New Sunday beer #2
Brugse Zot obtained via Belgianstyleales.com. Locally, my Belgian options have all but dried up so I buy a box now and then.

11.2oz bottle marked 26-01-2023 poured gently into a tulip glass at just above fridge temp 6% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright light honey amber in color with prolific head production and a constant stream of bubbles rising to the top of the glass. The head is eggshell colored and eventually settles to a quarter inch cap. No lacing despite the persistent head. The aroma is mild with pale malt, Belgian yeast (fruity) and some floral notes. The taste is semisweet crisp honey and pale malt, clovey & peppery yeast and floral, grassy hops. Medium bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with tons of natural carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, excellent. Such a well made and nuanced beer especially at 6% ABV.

    Cheers all!

Finally able to try Zombie Dust from 3 Floyds
Quite tasty, so glad they finally made it into West Michigan!
Poured the color of weak iced tea with a reasonable creamy white head, smelled of pleasant hops and citrus flavors.
Taste was initially more hoppy than I expected from a pale ale, but really good. Hops and citrus and discernible malts.
At 6.5ABV it’s not quite sessionable but I can see myself having cans of this pretty much always on hand once regular containers are available.
    Cheers!

Before I jump in on today’s beer, want to reply a few posts from this morning:
    • @jkblr - I love your comments on trying to broaden your beer purchases across multiple styles, staying out of a purchasing rut. Working through my cellar now, though will focus on the classics when I resume purchasing. Really glad I came across classics like Bigfoot and Obsidian Stout earlier this year based on several BA recommendations.
    • @cjgiant - Thanks for sharing your recap of the first half of 2021, and your review of Eddy Hopping. My 2019 FW Anniversary is one of my top rated beers I had this year, and I’m looking forward to trying the 2020 version later this year. I also have higher standards with a self proclaimed WCIPA being true to style, glad Eddy hit the spot for you, or at least more so than their other offerings. PS - I hope ChurchKey reopens soon, it’s one of my favorite beer bars worldwide. Long Live Cask!
    • @2beerdogs - Atomic was awesome when Rose managed the beer program (it's still nice, the beer list can be hit or miss), but Silver Stamp is what she opened. It's a beer only bar, no seltzers or booze, wine or anything else. Tagging @JackHorzempa for the discussion of beer only bars in another thread. Also, there are two Vegas threads in the Mountain Region thread with other good recommendations. I'm typically there a few weeks a year to visit family and drink craft, their scene has really picked up the past few years.
    • @MNAle - I hope to finally pick up JW Lees once I work through my current cellar, so many gushing reviews regarding their offerings.
Happy New Beer Sunday #853! I initially planned on popping this beer open in the morning, but glad I looked at the label first as this is a heavy hitter (11%). Took a nice walk this morning to burn the calories for this beer and food pairing (Free BD Month Whoopercheesie & Fries (and drink not pictured) from this Chicago Classic Institution and Lake Effect Brewing, a regular release since 2016 that I'm finally getting trying.

Lake Effect Brewing & Superdawg Drive In Super Shake

    Bottle Notes:
16.9 oz, 11% ABV. No bottle date but per social media this batch was bottled in December 2021, and refrigerated both at the brewery and at home since purchase in April.

A Barrel-Aged Chocolate Malt Inspired Stout. Hiya! The biggest beer yet in the series of collaborations between Superdawg Drive-In and Lake Effect Brewing. We are proud to present Barrel-Aged Supershake. Aged in Bourbon Barrels, this version of our chocolate malt inspired stout is a perfect nightcap for a 12-foot tall strongman and his lovely lady. Enjoy, Chicago! From the bottom of our pure hops heart, thanks for drinking!

Appearance: Dark brown / black base, light tan head dissipates nearly instantly, leaving a ring above the base. Light fizzy catbonation bubbles persistent. 3.75

    Aroma:
Pleasant smooth sweet bourbon aroma, roast malt and chocolate backs well. Supershake vibes, bold in strength. 4.0

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, very sweet base dominates, milk chocolate and light roast malt. Bourbon takes a back seat, in reverse to the lead on the nose, to the milk stout base. As this warms. Bourbon barrels not identified, but this comes in on the sweeter bourbon side as well, though not to a Jim Beam extreme. Light cinnamon and syrup as well, the whole breakfast cupboard. Truth in advertising, chocolate shake indeed. 4.0

    Mouthfeel:
Thin for a stout, milk or otherwise. Persistent faint thin carbonation throughout, sweetness sweetness, sweetness, bourbon strength the only mitigating offset. Consistent with beer bottle notes. Nice desert beer. ABV hits you as the beer warms and the bourbon expands its authority, Clean finish, slight alcohol warmth in the chest as you drink this. 3.75

Overall: Overall this is brewed consistent with the beer notes and style. I like the bourbon barrel in this beer, shines as the beer warms. The sweetness stronger than my typical preference, but I enjoyed and if you are looking for a desert beer, this is a solid option. Chocolate, malt, sweetness. It's all in the bottle. Hiya, thanks for reading, and pick this up if you are looking for a sweet desert BA offering. 4.0

Had the Superdawg meal in the oven for the review, time to dig in.

    Antidoot Woop Woop 2020

Pours a slightly clouded golden color with a medium sized, stable head.

Smells of dried dandelions, matured Camembert and vivid barnyard funk. Got a big load of wet basement on the nose as well as some white grape skins and old leather boots.

Has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel with a sparkly effervescence to it in the finish, making up for a great refreshment.

Tastes of dried apple peel, matured leaves, old mushrooms and wet grass, together with bitter blood orange. Has a slightly earthy, oak defined middle part, lending a wooden balance to the beer, which gets complimented by Sage and bitter herbs. Finishes almost creamy, with a mineralic stone quality among lime zest, leather and a long lasting herbal bitterness.

This has written Gueuze written all over it as this is utmost complex, refreshing and easy drinking at the same time. Intriguing on the nose, the mouthfeel in this is stunning, just as the marvelous flavor composition and overall balance in this. A lovely beer indeed.

Kros Strain Helles Creek German Style Lager 4.8%ABV from La Vista, Nebraska.
    L:3.75// S: 4.0// T: 4.0// F: 4.0// O: 4.0//
12oz can canned 4/21/21 poured into a tall lager glass.
L: Pours a light pale straw yellow, med-low carbonation, thin head, zero lacing. It has a very light yeast haze.
    S: Malty, yeasty, caramel, raisins.
T: Crisp pale lemon then quickly white bread, yeast and malt. Caramelized malt. It has a lightly sweet finish and remains crisp throughout the 12oz. Malting really shines in this beer.
F: Crisp, brisk, light, light bodied, low hops and the overall taste profile does not spread out over the palate. It is a gentle beer.
O: A very drinkable and accessible German lager. It reminds me of beers from August Schell. I got a 6pk and have tried it poured and also straight from the can. It is a very lovely and stable beer. Quite tasty and light.

Ok, so we made our way north, leaving our state to seek out a new brewery weekend location, Elder Pine Brewing and Blending Company. I started seeing their beers at my main bottle shop in the past few months and saw it was t too long a haul to check it out.

It’s a little farm brewery a few miles past one of my favorite “local” golf courses. They have a tasting room, an outdoor patio, and a bunch of picnic tables around the property. The tap list is a mix of IPAs, saisons, and witbiers, with varying inclusion of fruit.

I’ll get a few half pours to get a wider feel for their stuff and try to find out if something really speaks to me.

Véritable Villein (plastic glass) fits its description well enough. Dry, hay-like saison with some peppery notes in back. There’s a hint of bubblegum up front. Fairly crisp feel without too much carbonation, there is a nice light dry grass bitterness that lingers after each sip.

Every Villein is Lemons introduces Meyer lemons to presumably something resembling the base of the above beer. The nose is a little more lively and interesting, though lemons are not specifically bursting out. As I dig in, there’s a light fruit note that is almost more sweet lime-like to me. Taste has just a hint of extra tartness while similarly not being overly lemony.

Assuming similar bases, the lemons have the effect of taming the little sweetness of the malts. It becomes a little more tart as the beer warms. The flavor isn’t funky, but seems to fill in as a fake mixed-fermentation aspect, and a refreshing one. This beer is a little more carbonated than the last, and I’m enjoying it slightly more.

(Note: the big glass is the GF’s Nelson-hopped IPA, which smells very good but is a little on the sweet side up front; it recovers in back, though, and leaves a grape leave bitterness)

I forgot to throw in my top beers of 2021 to date.

    1. Maine Lunch (IPA) 5/2/21 4.46
    2. Revolution Ryeway to Heaven (rye beer) 1/30/21 4.44
    3. Taxman Evasion (American Imperial Stout) 4/25/21 4.44

It's unfortunate that I rarely stumble across an outstanding version of a lesser seen style, but that's the way it works.

Interesting you are reviewing a non-IPA from them. Have you had other of their beers? Their IPA Fairy Nectar is a favorite of the GF’s when we visit. I don’t recall being overly impressed with their offerings the one time we hit the brewery, but that was a couple years ago at this point.

Alright, back with my second formal new beer of the weekend. This one is Art History - Good Evening Vienna. This is a Vienna lager brewed with Vienna, Munich, and German malts with Spalter hops, checks in at 4.7% ABV and 28 IBU

This one pours a dark chestnut brown color. It has excellent clarity, brilliantly visible when held up to the light. Two to three finger off-white head forms on the beer before dissipating. Aroma has notes of dark bready malts, a hint of breadiness, no toasted or roasted notes. Some spicy hops come through with a hint of brown sugar or toffee.

Taste largely follows from the nose with notes of dark bready malts, a slight nuttiness with hints of brown sugar giving way to a spicy hop finish. Feel is light to moderately bodied, smooth, easy drinking. Somewhat drier, particularly through the finish.

This is a really well crafted Vienna. Hits all of the markers of the style in my mind and does so very well. I will be picking this one up again if they continue to make it available in cans.

Ryeway to Heaven is a Top Beer all time for me, goes under the radar in terms of comparison for the more hyped BA stouts, including the excellent Deth's Tar and Cafe Deth. Revolution has a great BA program.

If I could only have one Revolution Deep Woods release each year, it's Ryeway to Heaven. Lunch is a great beer as well, you had a great start to 2021!

If you like really sweet milk stout with a nice bourbon offset, it's solid. A little too sweet for regular purchases on my end, but brewed as advertised and I did enjoy. I liked their Wild Ale better Michigan de Cerise, rated yesterday.

Out by the pool after an excruciatingly painful Saturday at work. Need one. Picked this up on the way home last night.
    Two Roads Strat City
    IPA with Strata hops.
Pours a hazy yellow/gold with a 3/4" white head that settles quickly to a thin cap leaving spotty lacing.
Aroma is mango, passionfruit, dark berries, lemon, grass and good dank bud. I also get a white wine like quality.
Taste follows with tropicals, lemon, grapefruit, overipe dark berries, gooseberry. I do get a bit of that strawberry similar to what I taste in Belma hops. Yup the dank mary jane shows up in the taste as well.
Feel- the beer shines here with a nice soft bitterness, well balanced, oily at mid palate drying on the finish. Body is on the light side of medium, crisp, tiny carb throughout.
Cant recall ever having a single hopped Strata brew but this is really nice. At 7% a good quenching poolside sipper. I realize its seems like theres a million of these out there but this is worth a shot from a well known broad spectrum brewery. Cheers![IMG]
