It's not started yet? But it's almost noon, weekenders!

This is the thread, this is the time, and this is the place for new beer: new-to-you beer, something you've never had before. It can be a brand new release, a whale you've been hunting for a decade, or a mass-produced lager, ale, or stout you've simply never tasted before now.

Pictures are encouraged; links are welcome; your thoughts are a must! Tell us a little something about how the beer tastes, feels, smells - and more importantly, whether or not you like it! Your review need not be super wordy, technical, or professional, but imagine you're sitting next to us at the bar.

Me: "Oooh, that looks interesting. What's it like? Should I order it?"

You: [YOUR POST IN THIS THREAD]

Simple enough. Let's get right to it!

This is a curious offering I received from @Whyteboar in a LIF embedded in the NBS BIF. I say curious, because I've had Wizard Burial Ground before, but this can says "brewed and canned by Broad Leaf Local Beer" in Kentwood, MI - not exactly the same as Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, MI (although Kentwood is part of Grand Rapids).

Broad Leaf has an entry on this site, but not for this beer. Untappd shows Broad Leaf brewing this beer in the past. Is this their take on Wizard Burial Ground? Is it contract brewed?

    I have no idea!

So I'm going to review the beer as if new, but I won't be linking to a formal review, as I'm not sure if I should add this one as a new beer, or if it is really just Brewery Vivant's Wizard Burial Ground. (I will, however, link my review to Vivant's beer, and see how they compare! Whether a different take on the same beer, or my own take on the same beer across two different reviews, it should be interesting!)

Appearance: decent head production, all things considered; retention is poor, but that's not unexpected. Crystal clear dark coppery body. 3.5

Aroma: a touch sharp and oaky from the bourbon, giving a slightly sour edge to an otherwise malty and straightforward quad profile. Smells "big," but not harsh for the 11.7% ABV. Really quite complex, intriguing, and inviting. 4.5

Flavor: matches the nose quite well. There's a solid malt base beneath, with notes of dark fruit, brown sugar, bread, and nuts, accented by the very slightly sour bourbon note. Most BBA American quads I've found lack the sufficient malt base to really run pace with the bourbon; this one does not suffer from that. It's balanced, deep, moderately sweet, and rich. 4.5

Mouthfeel: big on the palate, but like the nose, not at all aggressive. You can sip, sit, savor, and chew without any harshness. Despite the relatively flat appearance, it's not at all flat on the palate, with just the right amount of sting to balance out the big body. 4.25

Overall: this is a damn good beer. I suspect it is, indeed, the same beer I reviewed before, but it could be another brewery's take on it, or a collaboration. It has aged superbly, without any hint of oxidation or staleness after at least a year. 4.25

@Whyteboar any clarification on what beer, exactly, I'm drinking? :grinning: :grinning:

How does it compare, then? Here's my review of Brewery Vivant's Wizard Burial Ground from January, 2019:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24678/106692/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.0 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 // 4.41 weighted score

Here's how this 2020 mystery-ish can breaks down:
    3.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.25 / 4.25 // 4.38 weighted score (if I did it right manually)

If this is the same beer, I'd say the review is pretty darn well in line. Either way, a delicious way to start the New Beer Weekend. Join me! :grinning:

    Good morning NBW
I try to tick every style twice, even if I'm not a fan. I have a local that produces an American dark wheat ale year round, but I'd never found a second until this week...
    Shock Top Twisted Pretzel
    [IMG]

12oz bottled 11/6/21 (28 days ago) poured into a perfect pint glass at fridge temp 5% ABV per label. The beer pours mostly bright light brown with meager off white head. The head actually disappears after a few minutes resembling a soft drink. There are a few bubbles popping up around the edge of the beer as it sets. No lacing. The aroma is mild, but smells exactly like a hot pretzel. The taste is semisweet with the pretzel flavor coming through big time, although it's a bit artificial. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, ok. Not my thing, but they'll be easy to give away through the holidays.

There you have it. I'll try to review something more to my liking later. Cheers all!

    It’s a Celebration!

Today’s a special day since it includes a long-time favorite of Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA but also a brand spankin’ new beer Brooklyn Winter IPA. Below is how Brooklyn details this beer on their website:

    “FROSTY HOPS & WARM RYE

Cold weather calls for thick knit hats, swift sleds, and Brooklyn Winter IPA. This classic IPA layers Simcoe and Trident hops for notes of dark fruit, blood orange, and bright, frosty juniper and pine aromas. A touch of rye spice notes warm the finish to keep you cozy to the core. Stock up and enjoy the flurries while they last.

    STYLE: RED IPA

    ABV: 7.0%

    AVAILABILITY

    LIMITED

    FORMAT

Draft, 12oz cans, and 12oz bottles

    TASTING NOTES

Wintry and warming with notes of juniper, blackberry jam, rye spice and fresh snowfall”

    https://brooklynbrewery.com/brooklyn-beers/seasonals/winter-ipa/

How will this new beer from Brooklyn compare to my old-time favorite of Celebration?

    Well, let’s find out.

Beers served in Spiegelau IPA glasses:

    Appearance

Brooklyn Winter IPA: Amber colored with a khaki colored head.

SN Celebration IPA: Amber colored (slightly darker in comparison) with a khaki colored head

    Aroma

Brooklyn Winter IPA: There is notable hop aromas (citrus, fruity, a hint of pine) and also malt aromas including some caramel

SN Celebration IPA: The nose is a combination of malty (e.g., caramel) and hop aromas (citrus and some pine).

    Taste:

Brooklyn Winter IPA: The flavor follows the nose with a pleasant balance of hop and malt flavors (detailed above). It has a medium bitterness.

SN Celebration IPA: The flavor is predominantly malts (e.g., caramel) but there is hop flavors there as well. It has a medium bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

Brooklyn Winter IPA: Light - medium bodied with a dry-ish finish.

SN Celebration IPA: Medium bodied with a soft-ish mouthfeel which ends with an off-dry finish.

    Overall

Brooklyn Winter IPA: This beer is very good. I really enjoyed the great balance of hop and malt flavors.

SN Celebration IPA: This beer is very good too. As I do every year, I enjoyed drinking this seasonal beer with the soft-ish mouthfeel being a plus for me.

These two beers are quite similar in nature. Hindsight being 20/20 it would have been fun to conduct a blind triangle taste test but there is enough difference in the qualities of these two beers I have little doubt that I would have selected the ‘odd’ beer from this taste test.

I had two beers so I offered to my wife a chance to take sips of each glass and select which one she would like to drink; she selected the Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA. There was no bad choice here IMO.

    Cheers!

One of my golfing buddies visited relatives in St. Louis over Thanksgiving and brought me back a couple beers. This one is Red Caboose, a "premium amber lager" from Tin Mill Brewing Company. It's an OK beer.
The beer is a hazy dark amber color with a tiny tan head.
Aroma of sweet malt and fruit. Subdued.
Not too much taste either. Caramel and cherry. Slight hops late.
    Light-to-medium bodied.

Thanks for the kickoff @Roguer. My brother slid into town for an early Thanksgiving and left me with this gem. It's a porter kind of morning.

    Gilded Age by La Cumbre

    Thanks @hophound
Deep mahogany with backlight allowing for a hint of dark golden brown to show through. Sandy to mocha colored fluff, great retention for a porter. Prominent layers of lacing.
Nose is solid porter: roast, bitter coffee, slight hints of sweet, a mild hint of dark fruit, followed by a slight nuttiness.
Flavor follows very close to nose. Deep roast, charred edges of brown bread, round cocoa, hazelnut, again an undercurrent of dark fruit: prune.
Medium to chewy. Slick finish. A nice mix of complex, slightly sweet notes play well with a bittering roast on the end.
    Overall, a really solid porter.

This is a barrel-aged version of a brewery near my house's signature beer. I have been hard on this brewery before, but really enjoy going to their taproom. This beer's look is dark coffee-brown, with a light-brown light foamy top. The smell is like a sugary Starbucks coffee treat that has heavy cream and a touch of bourbon. Vanilla and chocolate are also evident. The taste is strong milk chocolate, vanilla, cream, well-brewed coffee, Oreo cookie, and brown bread, which all come together quite well. The mouthfeel is like a chilled coffee concoction from Stabucks. Minimal carbonation. Silky. Very smooth. Overall, this is a delicious beer, and my favorite from Stillmank Brewing. The brewery is not as close to Lambeau Field as other breweries are, and they do not yet have my endorsement for veering off course if you are coming to town just for an NFL game, but it would be a nice place to visit if you are in town for a couple days. Actually, the location lines up well if you want to make a quick stop on the way to Door County, Wisconsin.

I picked up two Burial Beer Company IPAs at their taproom in progress in Charlotte, and am starting with Mythologies Of Realism, 8%ABV DIPA
    [IMG]
No legal home delivery of beer in my state, so I have to get up to Ashville, Charlotte, or Raleigh to pick up some Burial.

The description of the hopping on this can is impenetrable. Mosaic Incognito and Simcoe Cryo get top billing.

Pours a murky tan color with no floaties or sediment. Generous lingering fine white head and lacing.
Strong pineapple and orange juice aromas.
Sour pineapple, citrus, piney resin, light green pepper flavors.
Smooth with no hop burn. A little alcohol heat and bitter aftertaste.
When the beer is this good, I can put up with the pretensions, and the $19 four packs.

Thank you for kicking things off @Roguer !

Spiteful Brewing, and excellent Chicago brewer, is celebrating their 9th anniversary next weekend with a stellar lineup, including the 2021 release of the beer I pulled out today.

Spiteful Brewing Barrel Aged Belligerent Bob (2020)

    Can Notes:
12 oz canned 11/10/20, 12.3% ABV. Aged for 8 months in a bourbon barrel. Purchased at the taproom last December, refrigerated by the brewery and I since canning.

    Appearance:
Single elongated pour into a stemless snifter, creamy tan/egg white bubbly head lingers for a minute before leaving a creamy white ring above the base. Brown bronze clear base, carbonation persistent throughout. 4.5

    Aroma:
Let this sit to warm a bit. First thoughts 15 minutes in is the aroma is light in strength, primarily red wine, sweet malt and raisins, sweet overall. Light to mild bourbon aroma emerges over 20 minutes in, stays consistent throughout the rest of this tasting. 3.75

    Taste:
Taste bolder than aroma would lead. Very sweet malt leads, brown sugar, cherry, raisins and dates, oak barrel, red wine, and sweet bourbon/whiskey, reminds me of Jim Beam a bit, which is on the very sweet side for me. Mild pine hops bitterness detected, but not enough to keep this pour bursting with sweetness in check. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Creamy medium bodied base, sweetness consistent throughout, be it the base or the bourbon, leaving a sweet aftertaste, despite a detectable pine hops presence. Faint fizzy carbonation holds throughout. Overall, a wine/grape juice sweetness persistent throughout. 3.5

    Overall:
This is a good barrel aged Barleywine, sweeter than anticipated especially coming from Spiteful, and via experience of their standard base. Light hops presense, but between the malt base, and what I detect to be a sweeter bourbon than typical or at least preferred on my end. Perhaps the hops would have been more persistent with a fresh version. Overall. this is good but would grab their non BA version, or perhaps try a fresh sample, before picking up (and letting sit) a future BA version. 3.75

Have another local Barleywine planned for tomorrow, this one a collaboration between two Chicago heavyweights. Looking forward to reading your takes until then.

    Cheers!

I had these 2 beers (head to head) last night, finished them after midnight, soon I was too intoxicated to type. So I did my review of the new beer now. The new beer is Dangerous Man Doppelbock.

    Northbound Doppelbock 750ml crowler (8.5% ABV) @ $12.50 VS Dangerous Man Doppelbock 750ml crowler (9.2% ABV) @$12.00

My review of the Dangerous Man:

    Canned 11/24/2021, Batch# 1231, Price: $12.00 plus tax
Look: Nice looking beer. transparent Deep copper body. Nice tall light tan head, It hangs around for a while, slowly fading away & leaving some lacing.
Smell: toasted bread, sweet malt, not much of a aroma
Taste: Caramel, then a little toffee and toasted bread. Sweet but not cloying. Rather simple but tastes good, didn't notice any off flavors. Didn't notice any or much of a dark fruit flavor.
ABV is well hidden but it does come out as it warms.
Feel: rather smooth considering the ABV, malty, slightly syrupy. some carbonation.

A solid beer, but nothing super great. Would have been nice to have a stone washed dark fruit flavor in the mix. 3.82/5

Northbound I have had many times before. This batch seems to be tamed down flavor wise. Not as good as the last batch it seems, maybe it needs more lagering time?????? I didn't notice much dark fruit in this one neither.

Comparing the two Dangerous Man was sweeter, had a nicer head, more carbonation, was a better looking beer. Northbound had a darker body, almost brown colored, It had more of a roast flavor. The crowler poured rather flat.

I preferred the Dangerous Man over the Northbound in this head to head. But It was close, it just depends on what your in the mood for flavor wise.

But one might ask: Are these beers really worth the price????????

Northern Monk / Ārpus - Patrons Project 31.01: The Enlightenment

Triple New England IPA with Citra, Mosaic, Vic Secret, Enigma and Galaxy hops, from England (10%),

Pours a hazy orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus/berry hops, with notes of passion fruit, grapefruit and white grape, as well as a certain dankness also coming through.

Taste is an excellent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, dank and slightly resinous hops, with tropical and lighter citrus and berry notes of passion fruit, papaya, grapefruit, orange, white grape and blueberry, as well as a distinct dankness and hints of resinous pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some passion fruit, grapefruit and hints if weed and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Soft, pillowy mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for an excellent Triple New England IPA that combines all the style's strengths with none of the weaknesses, making for an incredibly enjoyable brew. First off, the balance ticks all my boxes here, being quite juicy, but with a very good bitterness and some dank and resinous notes as well, while the hops are just so vibrant and well-defined here, bursting with sweet tropical, zesty citrus and lightly acidic berry notes.

At the same time there is not a hint of overdone sweetness or booziness to this, while featuring a great, soft and pillowy mouthfeel. A truly outstanding TIPA that makes me sad that I can hardly get my hands on Northern Monk anymore.

Oh man, I really wanted to like this next one, I really did ...

    Sam Adams Reunion IPA

Given how good the new formula Winter Lager wound up, I had high hopes for this one. It starts out on a high note, too: it's a legitimately beautiful beer.

It's all downhill from there. It's not bad, it's just not particularly good, and I'm not sure I'm going to finish it.

The nose is complex, but muddled, with notes of candied orange, overripe peach, mint, caramel, and white grape. It's even more garbled on the palate. Pale grains and toasted malt notes lead off, with the hops behind ... but those hops aren't bright or clean. Nice level of bitterness, but it's just a confusing and unfulfilling. It starts clean in the sip, but just becomes overripe and awkward by mid-sip.

There are plenty of IPAs out there that aren't incredible, but which I'd happily order on tap if out for some wings or a burger. This is not one of them. I'd drink it, but I wouldn't order it on purpose.

Blue Point's Fest. Honestly, not bad. Reminds me somewhat of the Benediktiner Fest which I think is excellent. Bready, standard malt character, mildest hop character though oddly (pleasantly) finishes with some sticky pine presence. Herbal and floral at the front but collapses a little in the finish. I quite enjoy it. Mind, I grabbed a 6er on closeout so that would play into the overall value. Nice beer!

When I started on American craft beer, I recall having a few of Blue Point's Toasted Lager. Never minded them. This is a similar sort of beer, nothing to write home about but not every beer needs to be written (home) about. Cheers!

    Camba Bavaria - Gose

    A Gose from Germany (4.5%)

Pours a clear, pale golden coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of doughy wheat malt and hints of fruity esters and lactic acid.

Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of doughy wheat malt, hints of estery fruit, with accents of tart green apple, some hay, sea salt and a mild underlying lactic/citric acidity. Finishes with a light tartness and some doughy malt, sea salt and lactic/citric acidity lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a light body and medium carbonation.

This makes for a perfectly nice, understated traditional Gose with a mild acidity and hints of sea salt, although it seems to lack the traditional addition of coriander. Quite an easy-drinking and refreshing brew that is probably much better enjoyed during the summer months, but still makes for an enjoyable drinking experience nonetheless.

Howdy all, a couple quick ticks today before work tonight. Starting with one from @Ozzylizard and the recent NBS BIF #14, Twang-A-Rang from Martin House. he sent me several beers from this brewery, and they seem to be pretty gimmicky in general. This beer is a Mango Chile Sour that not very sour, and not overly peppery. Almost restrained by the standards they set with their over the top pickle beers.

Moving right along after a very disappointing change of pace beer.

There's a discussion going on about how, exactly, you define a "pastry stout." Are there essential ingredients? A minimum number of ingredients, or a minimum ABV? Can you somehow quantify the mouthfeel?

Well, to paraphrase: I may not know how to define pastry stout, but I know it when I see it.

I know it when I see an imperial stout from Angry Chair. I know it when I see an imperial stout from Untitled Arts. And I definitely know it when I see a collaboration between Angry Chair and Untitled Arts called Barrel Aged Fully Loaded French Toast.

At 13.5%, perhaps it's for the best that I'm splitting this one with my partner. Beer provided by @DoctorZombies .

Do you like these kinds of beers? If not, then don't shell out the cash for it. If you do, however, you'd be hard pressed to find a better brewer of pastry stouts than Untitled Arts, and one of the few who arguably do exactly that is Angry Chair.

Every time I come across one of Angry Chair's legendary stouts (pretty much always thanks to Dave), I am biased into thinking the ratings are too high: it's the hype, the rarity, the sweet tooth, the homerism. And every time, it only takes a sip or two to realize: no, those ratings are about exactly where they should be. I don't know why I'm still surprised at this point.

First off, let's answer the obvious question: does it taste like French toast? Yes, yes, absolutely yes. Especially the second half of the sip, you could close your eyes and imagine you're eating (drinking) a slice of French toast, topped with maple syrup, whipped cream, chopped pecans and walnuts, powdered sugar, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce.

But it's also much more than that. Notes of chocolate, espresso, and molasses from the stout base; sweet bourbon mash from the barrel aging; red grapes and cherries. It's every bit a BBA imperial stout; it just happens to also do one hell of a French toast impression, like when you watch a great actor. You know it's still that actor, beneath the costume, makeup, and accent, but you find yourself buying into the role, believing - or at least wanting to believe - in the portrayal.

This is damn good. What a change after the last beer, too - more than a 1.00 swing in rating!

Excellently balanced flavors; light malt backbone with a pleasantly balanced, light toned hop bitterness. Medium body; soft and delicate on the palate; pleasantly nuanced sweetness to the mouthfeel.

What a pleasing and enjoyable pilsner. I've had a few kveik yeast-based lagers of late and this one is one of the best. The can label calls it a "kveik fermented pilsner inspired ale". To me, this is a light and tasty lager all the way. Regardless, it's a beauty to behold and a joy to drink.

...I love the beauty and simplicity of a well-crafted beer...this one meets those parameters...
