No, North East = Northeast. Just two ways to spell the same region.

But for completeness, the Northeast is larger than New England.

    Cheers!

Ah yes, I see what you're saying. I already think of these beers as North East IPA and I completely transposed that onto your post saying New England (in spite of the bold:flushed: I blame my newborn).

I suppose we could avoid the debate about the appropriate regional designation by just naming the style Knee-puh. That would have the added benefit of appeasing the IPA purists that object to these wild deviations from the clear bitter baseline.

Of course, without that magical acronym I wonder if the breweries would still be able to sell any beer?

(Added bonus to my above name proposal, milkshake IPA could be renamed Ghee-puh . I'm here all week folks, tip your servers)

Great thread! I still stand by my words and wish the style (mostly in name) was never created for so many reasons, but times change and BeerAdvocate is here to serve its users, visiting consumers, and the industry. "New England IPA" is what stuck, and we all have it live with it now (just like we have to live with "Milkshake IPA"). :grimacing:

Personally, I don't hate NEIPAs. I just don't seek them out. I've tried a ton of them though, but most have been mediocre and samey (and overpriced, and more about the name/branding than the quality of the liquid inside). That said, there are indeed some world-class examples to be had (and worth every penny) and I've enjoyed quite a few of them over the years.

For some background, we proclaimed "It's Official New England India Pale Ale Is a Style" in BeerAdvocate magazine #124 (May 2017), and added the style to the site on Sep 1, 2018. In hindsight, I would've added the style sooner to ensure more accurate beer listings/data today. And you'll see this thinking being applied going forward.

And people now complain that Brut IPA was added as a site category at a time when beers were being marketed as such. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I knew it existed, as my brother's neighbor (~15 min from Monson, at the time) frequented Treehouse. Heard about from my brother, & then here when I joined BA. I had no understanding of what it was, experience-wise, as none were here, just 4hrs drive west of the sources. Might have been late '16, or early '17 before I tried any.

I can tell you were the type of kid that loved getting stickers on your homework assignments. Look at you now. I'm just curious... and please take me back. How did you come to this realization all these years ago? I mean, from the sounds of it, no one else saw it but you. Like what was your thought process, and do you remember exactly where you were when you had this incredible epiphany? Job well done, sir. Cheers!

Or possibly just a guy who likes irony. I appreciate a bit of it from time to time myself. Cheers.
